Background: The pyogenic liver abscess has an incidence of 1.1/1,000 habitants. Mortality can reach 100%. The use of less invasive procedures diminish morbidity and hospital stay. Aim: Identify risk factors in patients who underwent percutaneous drainage guided by ultrasound as treatment. Method: Were analyzed 10 patients submitted to the method. Epidemiological characteristics, laboratory markers and imaging exams (ultrasound and CT) were evaluated...

Aim: To quantify the main early postoperative complications in patients submitted to the gastric bypass. Method: Observational retrospective cohort. Data of 1051 patients with class II obesity associated with comorbidities or class III obesity submitted to the gastric bypass with 30 days of follow-up starting from the date of the surgery...

METHODS: Assessment in 79 patients with SAH, on two occasions: pre- and post surgical treatment. They were divided into three groups by the aneurysms' location. RESULTS: Deterioration is detected in the performance of all patients during the post-surgical period; L-MCA aneurysm patients displayed a reduction in verbal naming and fluency; L-PcomA patients deteriorated in the written language and fluency tasks...

OBJECTIVE: this study analyzed the influence of scenario-based skills training on students' learning skills. METHOD: the author evaluated the nursing skills laboratory exam papers of 605 sophomores in nursing programs for seven years. The study determined the common mistakes of students and the laboratory work was designed in a scenario-based format. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated by assessing the number of errors the students committed and their achievement scores in laboratory examinations...

ABSTRACTGenetic mitochondrial disorders are responsible for the most common inborn errors of metabolism, caused by mutations in either nuclear genes or in mitochondrial DNA. This article presents the prokaryotic origin of the organelle and the relation between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, as well as current evolutionary models for such mechanisms. It also addresses the structure of mitochondrial genes, their expression pattern, clinical features of gene defects, risk of transmission and current techniques to avoid these events in assisted human reproduction...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential intravenous drug incompatibilities and related risk factors in a pediatric unit. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study conducted in the pediatric unit of a university hospital in Brazil. Data on prescriptions given to children aged 0-15 years from June to October 2014 were collected. Prescriptions that did not include intravenous drugs and prescriptions with incomplete dosage regimen or written in poor handwriting were excluded...

The BRAF(V600E) mutation confers constitutive kinase activity and accounts for >90% of BRAF mutations in melanoma. This genetic alteration is a current therapeutic target; however, the antitumorigenic effects of the BRAF(V600E) inhibitor vemurafenib are short-lived and the majority of patients present tumor relapse in a short period after treatment. Characterization of vemurafenib resistance has been essential to the efficacy of next generation therapeutic strategies. Herein, we found that acute BRAF inhibition induced a decrease in active MMP-2, MT1-MMP and MMP-9, but did not modulate the metalloproteinase inhibitors TIMP-2 or RECK in naïve melanoma cells...

Objective: To determine the proportional distribution of endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) subtypes and to evaluate the types of bronchoscopic diagnostic procedures that can prove granulomatous inflammation. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 18 HIV-negative patients with biopsy-proven EBTB treated between 2010 and 2014. Results: The most common EBTB subtypes, as classified by the bronchoscopic features, were tumorous and granular (in 22...

BACKGROUND: Because of the high density of fat, high-fat diets are perceived as likely to lead to increased bodyweight, hence health-care providers are reluctant to recommend them to overweight or obese individuals. We assessed the long-term effects of ad libitum, high-fat, high-vegetable-fat Mediterranean diets on bodyweight and waist circumference in older people at risk of cardiovascular disease, most of whom were overweight or obese. METHODS: PREDIMED was a 5 year parallel-group, multicentre, randomised, controlled clinical trial done in primary care centres affiliated to 11 hospitals in Spain...

Nutritional and metabolic complications can develop after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) when there is an exaggerated response to the anatomical and functional changes or when there is inadequate nutritional supplementation. Severe malnutrition is rare, but deficiencies of vitamin B12, iron, calcium and thiamin, metabolic bone disease and gallstones are common after RYGB. Shortage of vitamin B12, iron, calcium and also cholelithiasis are caused at least partially by excluding the duodenum and proximal jejunum from food transit...

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the feasibility, safety and benefits of minimally invasive surgery for resection of gastric submucosal tumor (GSMT). METHODS: we conducted a retrospective study of medical records of patients undergoing endoscopy-assisted laparoscopic resection of gastric submucosal tumors (prospectively collected) from 2011 to 2014. We evaluated clinical data, surgical approach, clinicopathological characteristics of the GSMT (size, location, histopathological and immunohistochemical exams), outcome and patients follow-up...

Citrus × limon cv. Femminello Comune (Rutaceae) from Rocca Imperiale (Italy), one of the six Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Italian lemon crops, has been recently received renewed interest. In this work, fresh and dried peels and leaves were extracted by hydrodistillation, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and Soxhlet apparatus. Chemical profile was assessed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Except for leaves extracts obtained by Soxhlet apparatus, the monoterpene hydrocarbons fraction dominated...

BACKGROUND: The Comunity Health Centre (CHC) primary care model is a team-based health care delivery model intended to provide comprehensive and continuous medical care to patients within a defined community. The CHC, Case della Salute in Italian, model was introduced in the Emilia-Romagna Region in 2010. METHODS: We present updated data on the implementation on the CHC Case della Salute primary care model in the Emilia-Romagna Region. RESULTS: There are 67 operating CHCs in Emilia-Romagna (update March 2015); 26 small (39%), 24 medium (36%) and 17 large (25%)...

The increase in antibiotic drug resistance and the low number of new antibacterial drugs approved in the last few decades requires the development of new antimicrobial strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are very promising molecules to fight microbial infection since they kill quickly bacteria and, in some cases, target bacterial membrane. Although some AMPs may be stable against proteolytic degradation by chemical modification, in general, low AMP activity and stability in the presence of serum and proteolytic enzymes as well as their cytotoxicity have impaired their clinical translation...
