The CP violation observables S and C in the decay channel B^{0}→D^{+}D^{-} are determined from a sample of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb^{-1}. The observable S describes CP violation in the interference between mixing and the decay amplitude, and C parametrizes direct CP violation in the decay. The following values are obtained from a flavor-tagged, decay-time-dependent analysis: S=-0...

Adherence to antituberculosis drug regimens is critical for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in pediatrics. In a large retrospective series of children and adolescents in Barcelona, Spain, completion of treatment was worse among patients treated for latent infection, compared with those treated for active tuberculosis or receiving primary chemoprophylaxis. Toxicity and cultural and language barriers were identified as predictors of non-adherence.

BACKGROUND: Refugees arrive in Canada with settlement challenges different from those faced by other immigrants, including a higher risk of poor health. This study reports hospitalization rates for the three fiscal years from 2006/2007 through 2008/2009 for immigrants who arrived during the 1980-to-2006 period, with a focus on three refugee groups. DATA AND METHODS: Information from two linked databases was used to estimate age-standardized hospitalization rates (ASHRs) per 10,000 population aged 30 or older for all causes (excluding pregnancy) and for leading causes, by immigrant category and by refugee subcategory...

Patients with chronic diseases often face financial barriers to optimize their health. These financial barriers may be related to direct healthcare costs such as medications or self-monitoring supplies, or indirect costs such as transportation to medical appointments. No known framework exists to understand how financial barriers impact patients' lives or their health outcomes. We undertook a grounded theory study to develop such a framework. We used semistructured interviews with a purposive sample of participants with cardiovascular-related chronic disease (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, or stroke) from Alberta, Canada...

Patients with atrial fibrillation have an increased risk for stroke, systemic embolism and cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death. However, the majority of studies that have analyzed the efficacy of anticoagulants have been focused only on their effects on the risk of stroke. Areas covered: The available evidence about the association between atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular disease as well as the effects of oral anticoagulation on cardiovascular death and myocardial infarction, with a particular focus on direct oral anticoagulants, was updated in this review...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to better understand the impact that financial barriers have on patients with diabetes and the strategies that they use to cope with them. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted of 24 interviews with patients who had either type 1 or type 2 diabetes and perceived financial barriers, which were previously undertaken for a larger grounded theory study. Semistructured interviews were undertaken either face-to-face or by telephone...

Several azine derivatives have been prepared and structurally characterized by spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Two of them, viz. naphthalene based (A10) and anthracene based (A11) show fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Ag(+) in aqueous-methanol. Moreover, A11 efficiently tracks Ag(+)in vitro endophytic bacteria infected rice root tissue. Experimental results have been substantiated by theoretical DFT calculations.

We studied the relationship between CD44 and Forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) gene expression in cell lines and breast carcinomas and their association with clinicopathological variables and patient outcome. We assessed messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of CD44 and FOXP3 by quantitative real-time PCR and determined the number of FOXP3+ Tregs by immunohistochemistry in 264 breast cancer specimens. CD44 was stimulated with hyaluronan treatment, and the accompanying changes in FOXP3 mRNA expression in breast cancer cell lines representing breast cancer subtype were assessed...

The photo-degradation of the emerging contaminant antipyrine (AP) was studied and optimized in a novel photocatalytic spinning disc reactor (SDR). A heterogeneous process (UV/H2O2/TiO2) was used. TiO2 was immobilized on the surface of a glass disc using a sol-gel method. A factorial design of experiments followed by a Neural Networks fitting allowed the optimal conditions to be determined for treating 50 mg/L of AP. Under these conditions (pH = 4; [H2O2]0 = 1500 mg/L; disc speed = 500 rpm; flowrate = 25 mL/s), AP was completely degraded in 120 min and regeneration of the disc allowed 10 cycles with no loss in efficiency...

An imidazolidine-phenolate ligand HL yields quadruple-bridged (μ-NCNimidazolidine)2(μ-Ophenolate)2 ferromagnetic dinuclear nickel and cobalt complexes. Both kinds of bridges contribute to the ferromagnetic coupling, but the ferromagnetism of these samples is mainly ascribed to the double μ-Ophenolate links, on the basis of density functional theory calculations. These studies demonstrate not only that the short M-O-M angles of the M2O2 cores favors the parallel alignment of the electrons but also that these angles are the optimal ones for maximizing the ferromagnetic contribution in these complexes...

The B_{s}^{0}π^{±} invariant mass distribution is investigated in order to search for possible exotic meson states. The analysis is based on a data sample recorded with the LHCb detector corresponding to 3  fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=7 and 8 TeV. No significant excess is found, and upper limits are set on the production rate of the claimed X(5568) state within the LHCb acceptance. Upper limits are also set as a function of the mass and width of a possible exotic meson decaying to the B_{s}^{0}π^{±} final state...

The 2 × 2 model of dispositional perfectionism has been very well received by researchers of the topic, leading to the creation of new studies that have analyzed the way in which the four proposed subtypes are distinctly associated with measures of adaptation and maladjustment. The goal of this study was to determine the possible existence of four profiles of child perfectionism that are congruent with the subtypes proposed by the 2 × 2 model, and whether these subtypes are associated with school anxiety, in accordance with the hypotheses established by the model...

OBJECTIVE: To estimate and project the productivity costs of work loss (PCWL) associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in Canada using a population-based health microsimulation model (POHEM). DESIGN: We integrated an employment module based on 2006 Canadian Census into the previously developed microsimulation model of OA. The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Cycle 2.1 with an OA sample aged 25-64 (n = 7067) was used to calibrate the results of the employment module and to estimate the fraction of non-employment associated with OA...

BACKGROUND: The role of frailty as a prognostic factor in non-selected patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (SAS) is still uncertain. This study aims to examine the association between the frailty syndrome and mortality among very old patients with symptomatic SAS, and to assess whether the association varies with the type of SAS treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Prospective study of 606 patients aged ≥75years with symptomatic SAS, recruited from February 2010 to January 2015, who were followed up through June 2015...

Current research on female colour polymorphism in Ischnura damselflies suggests that a balanced fitness trade-off between morphotypes contributes to the maintenance of polymorphism inside populations. The genetic inheritance system constitutes a key factor to understand morph fluctuation and fitness. Ischnura genei, an endemic species of some Mediterranean islands, has three female colour morphs, including one androchrome (male-coloured) and two gynochromes. In this study, we reared two generations of I. genei under laboratory conditions and tested male behavioural responses to female colour morphs in the field...

Marcelo Sanmartín-Fernández, Domingo Marzal-Martín
Despite direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have overcome the most relevant limitations of vitamin K antagonists, many patients with atrial fibrillation are not receiving the appropriate anticoagulant therapy. In addition, when patients are anticoagulated with DOACs, some of them are not taking the dose recommended in the summary of product characteristics. This may be related, at least in part, to the concern about the applicability of findings from randomized clinical trials to real-life patients. In this context, performing studies in daily clinical practice to assess the efficacy and safety of DOACs in real-world setting is mandatory...
