This paper reviews the circumstances in which the concept of miasm evolved and how subsequent developments in medicine have improved our understanding of the cause of diseases. It concludes with an emphasis on the need to further refine the homeopathic concept of disease.

REVIEW
L R Milgrom
The possibility that non-linear quantum theory could be used to model PPR entanglement is discussed in relation to the treatment of miasms. In this model, miasms are imagined as disease entities behaving like solitary waves, or 'solitons' which, when trapped in a therapeutic state space, requiring equally soliton-like (miasmatic or high potency) remedies to effectively 'annihilate' them.

REVIEW
H Montfort-Cabello
BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases (CD), miasms or reactional modes, remain one of the darkest concepts of homeopathy. They are supposed to be heritable and originate after suppression of other diseases. Besides this nothing is known about how they might produce the large number of diseases mentioned in homeopathic books. They have been described in a variety of terms, ranging from Kent and Gathak's spiritual or metaphysic conception; the biological-allergic by Paschero, and, Robert's materialist-nutritional point of view...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
R McCarney, P Fisher, F Spink, G Flint, R van Haselen
Dowsing is a method of problem-solving that uses a motor automatism, amplified through a pendulum or similar device. In a homeopathic context, it is used as an aid to prescribing and as a tool to identify miasm or toxin load. A randomized double-blind trial was conducted to determine whether six dowsing homeopaths were able to distinguish between Bryonia in a 12c potency and placebo by use of dowsing alone. The homeopathic medicine Bryonia was correctly identified in 48.1% of bottle pairs (n=156; 95% confidence interval 40...

The aim of this project is to develop a common homeopathic terminology to improve communication. A questionnaire was sent by email to an international group of experts. As a result of an iterative process we propose that a number of terms which are inaccurate, unclear or have become outdated should be replaced by new terms. The main areas in which terminology should be updated are: concepts relating to: homeopathic pharmacology, research, homeopathic medicine, the principle of similarity, homeostasis and disease imitation, miasms, experimental homeopathy, provings and pathogenic trials...
