Following any aggression, the body starts an infl ammatory response, mediated by humoral and cellular factors, intended to limit the process and eventually to heal. In some cases, either due to the intensity or the duration of the aggression or due to an inadequate response of the host, secondary to genetic polymorphisms, malnutrition or other causes, a state of hyper activation of infl ammatory cells is originated, with liberation of immature cells and activation of monocytes and macrophages, which liberate very powerful pro infl ammatory mediators that induce a state of generalized systemic infl ammation...

OBJECTIVE: Esthesioneuroblastoma accounted for only 6% of the malignant nasal cavity neoplasms (ENB) is a rare tumor which originates from the olfactory epithelium. ENB's are locally agresive and can metastasize by lymphatic and hematogenous routes. A patient with the mass on the nasal dorsum was reported in this article. CASE HISTORY: A 52-year-old-man admitted to the hospital with a 3 months history of progressive nasal obstruction, epistaxis and mass on the nasal dorsum...

Cardiac tumors, are a rare pathology (0.002-0.3%) in all age groups, however, they have a clinic importance, due the affected organ. They are classified in primary (benign or malignant) and secondary (metastasis) types. Among primary type, mixoma, is the most common benign tumor, and sarcoma represents most of the malignant injuries. Cardiac metastasis are more frequent than primary tumors. Clinic effects of cardiac tumors are unspecific and vary according their location, size and agresivity. The use of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) assist on the location, sizing, anatomical relationships and the compromise of adyacents structures, besides, MRI is useful for tissue characterization of the tumor...

A comprehensive study was conducted to analyse the meat quality attributes, composition and carcass traits in Aseel chickens and commercial broilers at market age on the basis of physiological age. A total of 20 Aseel (26 and 56 weeks) and 20 broiler (6 weeks) chickens were divided into two groups on a live weight basis, i.e. large (≥2.5 kg) and small (<2.5 kg) with 10 birds in each subgroup. The pH of meat did not show any significant variation between Aseel and broiler chickens. The meat from heavier birds had significantly higher pH...

Orbital complications categorised by Chandler are emergency. They need early diagnosis and agresive treatment. Stage and origin of orbital complications are identified by rhinoendoscopy, ophtalmologic examination and CT of orbite and paranasal sinuses. Periorbital cellulitis and early stage of orbital cellulitis can be treated conservatively with i. v. antibiotics. Monitoring of laboratory parameters and ophtalmologic symptoms is mandatory. Lack of improvement or worsening of symptoms within 24-48 hours and advanced stages of orbital complications are indicated for surgery...

Autophagy is a complex process in which cell homeostasis of proteins, organelles, exocitic and endocitic vacuoles are controlled. There is a direct link between autophagy and cell death with antigen processing, generation of inflammatory response and immune response. In different diseases, deficiencies in autophagy have been reported. It has been proposed that in early stages of cancer, autophagy is capable of inducing cell death; however, in agresive tumors and metastasis, the process is responsible for pharmacologic resistance and tumor survival...

Empirical research has shown that parent-child conflict is positively related to poor adjustment in adolescents; however, the underlying processes have not been adequately examined. To explore the possible mediating pathways, reciprocal filial belief and perceived threat were chosen to represent two likely mechanisms accounting for how parent-child conflict harms adolescents' perceptions of their relationship with their parents and their self-perceptions within their cognitive-appraisal framework. The former operates by attenuating children's affection towards their parents and the latter by lowering their self-perceptions...

Ordinary clinical manifestation of the patient with bilateral vocal fold paralysis is inability of abducting the cords with a result of narrowing the glottic space, causing inspiratory stridor and mild dysphonia. Such patients can be life threatened due to narrowing airway. Some kind of surgery has to be performed on these patients in order to enlarge the airway. When we treat patients with OPG, the most reasonable way is to gradually enlarge airway at glotic level and there are several surgical methods for achieving this...

UNLABELLED: The gastrointestinal stromal tumours expand from the undefine mezenchimal cells of the intestinal wall and the origin is in the Cajal interstitial cells. The agresivity of GIST is difficult to be evaluate. Very importants factors for grading are the tumour localisation, the invasion of serosa or mucosa, the dimensions of tumour and the number of mytosis. We present a case with haemoragic gastric stromal tumour, with small dimensions, which was initially diagnosed as a "benign" tumour...

Female urethral stricture is an infrequent cause of bladder outlet obstruction, which is also a rare clinical entity in women. The most frequent etiology is the previous urogenital surgery. Periurethral fibrosis is the final cause regardless the etiology. Considerably controversie surrounds in the diagnostic criteria but the estrictures are structural obstructions which involve media and distal third of the female urethra. There is no treatment consensus, but less agresive maneuvers such as dilatations and urethrotomies are chosen to treat primary estrictures, although the high recurrence rates...

This consensus statement aims to enhance awareness of the incidence and risks of hypopituitarism in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or brain hemorrhages among physicians treating patients with brain damage. The importance of this problem is related not only to the frequency of TBI but also to its prevalence in younger populations. The consequences of TBI are characterized by a series of symptoms that depend on the type of sequels related to neuroendocrine dysfunction. The signs and symptoms of hypopituitarism are often confused with those of other sequels of TBI...

Three different variants of biologically agressive cervical cancers, such as: basaloid carcinoma, glassy cell carcinoma and small cell endocrine carcinoma, have been reported. Hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid-Schiff and immunohistochemical stains were used. The course of disease and aplication of treatment has been analyzed as well. Characteristic morphologic features of these cancers have been emphasized. Rather limited susceptibility for radiotherapy and chemiotherapy of these cancers has not gone unnoticed...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Prostate cancer is a common neoplasm, with a significant burden of mortality. Since it's diagnosed at old ages and usually growths slowly, agresive treatment of localised cancer of prostate could be of little benefit. The study of the evolution of incidental prostate cancer diagnosed 20 years ago could give directions for present decision-making. METHODS: We performed a time survival analysis of patients diagnosed of incidental prostate cancer between 1980 and 2000, and followed them until april 2005...

Mucosal melanomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rare and agresive neoplasms and carries a bad prognosis. The diagnosis may require confirmatory immunohistochemical stains (S-100 protein, HMB-45, vimentin and cytokeratine). The clinical records of 6 patients with the diagnosis of sinonasal melanomas between 1991 and 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. The mean age was 70 years (range 51 to 83 years), there were 2 men and 4 women. Surgery was performed in four patients, adjuvant radiation therapy was used in one patient after local recurrence and chemotherapy in three patients...
