There is interest to analyse newer biomarkers to identify healthy individuals at risk to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidents and death. To determine in healthy individuals new circulating protein biomarkers, whose systemic levels may be associated with the risk of future development of CVD incidents and death. The study was performed in 82 individuals from the Malmö Diet and Cancer study cohort, free from CVD of whom 41 developed CVD and 41 did not. Plasma proteins related to inflammation and thrombo-coagulating processes were analysed...

A(1) adenosine receptors (A1AR) are required for the modulation of afferent arteriolar tone by changes in luminal NaCl concentration implying that extracellular adenosine concentrations need to change in synchrony with NaCl. The present experiments were performed in mice with a null mutation in the gene for the major equilibrative nucleoside transporter ENT1 to test whether interference with adenosine disposition by cellular uptake of adenosine may modify TGF characteristics. Responses of stop flow pressure (P(SF)) to maximum flow stimulation were measured in mice with either C57Bl/6 or SWR/J genetic backgrounds...

The technique used until recently utilizing the Ne-He laser for imaging bolometer foils calibration [B. J. Peterson et al., J. Plasma Fusion Res. 2, S1018 (2007)] has showed several issues. The method was based on irradiation of 1 cm spaced set of points on a foil by the laser beam moved by set of mirrors. Issues were the nonuniformity of laser power due to the vacuum window transmission nonuniformity and high reflection coefficient for the laser. Also, due to the limited infrared (IR) window size, it was very time consuming...

INTRODUCTION: In acute canine studies, lidocaine, but not procainamide, increases defibrillation energy requirements. We evaluated the effects of lidocaine or procainamide on defibrillation energy requirements in 27 patients undergoing intraoperative testing for implantable cardioverter defibrillator device placement. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were tested off antiarrhythmic drugs and again following either lidocaine (200 to 250 mg loading and 3 mg/min maintenance infusions) or procainamide (1 gm loading and 3 to 4 mg/min maintenance infusions)...

MHV-A59 recognizes a 100-110 K glycoprotein receptor on intestinal and liver plasma membranes. The receptor protein was affinity purified using an anti-receptor monoclonal antibody. Purified receptor was sequenced from the 1st to the 15th amino acids. Antiserum raised against a synthetic peptide having this sequence bound to the 110 K receptor from BALB/c intestine and a 58 K fragment of the receptor. SJL/J mice are resistant to MHV-A59 and their plasma membranes were previously shown to lack binding to MHV...

Hepatic levels of mRNA specific for total serum amyloid A (SAA), the SAA1 and SAA2 isotypes, serum amyloid P (SAP), C-reactive protein (CRP), and fibronectin, as well as the plasma concentrations of SAA and SAP were examined in amyloid-resistant (A/J) and amyloid-susceptible (CBA/J) mice during azocasein-induced chronic inflammation. In both strains hepatic SAA and SAP mRNA levels and plasma SAA and SAP protein concentrations increased dramatically during the early stages of inflammation; this was followed by a decrease to concentrations that were maintained at levels considerably higher than background...
