BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) is the most frequent subtype of secondary HLH triggered by infections. Previous studies have shown that ~30 % or more of patients with EBV-HLH do not respond to standard therapy.
