REVIEW
Maria Mantzourani, Deepak Sharma
OBJECTIVE: This review defines dentine sensitivity (DS), its prevalence, its aetiology, the mechanism(s) responsible for DS, its diagnosis and its treatment. The review then examines the modes of action of various treatments for DS including potassium salts, strontium salts, bioglasses, arginine/calcium carbonate and professional treatments such as adhesives and oxalates. The methods used to evaluate the various treatment modalities are discussed, including laboratory studies and randomised controlled clinical trials...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
Deepak Sharma, Christopher X Hong, Paul S Heipp
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of a new potassium oxalate (KO)-containing mouthrinse [Listerine® Advanced Defence Sensitive (LADS)] in reducing dentine permeability and occluding open dentinal tubules versus other desensitising products. METHODS: The permeability of acid-etched dentine disks was measured by hydraulic conductance; dentine surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The KO concentration was optimised for tubule occlusion by screening formulations containing 0...

JOURNAL ARTICLE
C P Abirami, Pankajalakshmi V Venugopal
Mouthrinses are nowadays routinely included in the home care oral hygiene maintenance besides dentifrice/tooth paste. Mouthrinses prevent bacterial attachment and prevent or slow down bacterial proliferation. Fungal organisms have now gained more importance due to increased incidence of AIDS/HIV. This has necessitated for mouthrinses to possess antifungal activity also. The mouthrinses used were Povidone iodine ( Wokadine), Thymol with Eucalyptol and Benzoic acid (Listerine) and fluoride with Triclosan (Colgate Plax), which were tested against oral isolates of different species of Candida...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
George E White, Mirna T Armaleh
Mutans streptococci (MS) are one of the most virulent cariogenic pathogens in the oral cavity. The effects of three oral hygiene techniques on salivary mutans streptococci levels were evaluated to see which mechanism would be most efficient in reducing salivary MS levels. Sixty patients, all in the permanent dentition, were selected and randomly distributed into three groups. Group I was asked to use a tongue scraper to brush the tongue once daily in the morning after normal tooth brushing routine. Group II was asked to place and let dissolve a Listerine Oral Care Strip on the tongue once daily after normal oral hygiene routine...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
Adrian U J Yap, Bernard W Y Tan, L C Tay, K M Chang, T K Loy, Betty Y Y Mok
This study investigated the effect of commercially available mouthrinses on the microhardness and wear of composite (Esthet-X, Dentsply) and compomer (Dyract Posterior, Dentsply) restoratives. Fifty-four hardness and 36 wear specimens of each material were fabricated and stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for two weeks. The specimens were then randomly divided into six equal groups and exposed to the following solutions for 24 hours at 37 degrees C: distilled water [WC] (control); Listerine Original [AP] (alcohol-containing essential oil/phenolic compound mouthrinse); Colgate Chloropharm [AC] (alcohol-containing chlorhexidine mouthrinse); Oral B Tooth & Gum Care [AF] (alcohol-containing fluoride mouthrinse); Oral B Tooth & Gum Care Alcohol Free [OF] (alcohol free fluoride mouthrinse) and Oral B Sensitive [PF] (phosphoric acid containing fluoride mouthrinse)...
