Single-port laparoscopic surgery is usually performed on patients with minor comorbidities. The aim of the study was to evaluate feasibility and efficacy of single-port fecal diversion in patients who had previous abdominal operations or comorbidities. Between October 2010 and March 2012, 14 patients with a median age of 57 years were diverted. The reasons for diversion were perianal infection/abscess (n=5), anal incontinence (n=3), radiation proctitis (n=2), colovesical fistula causing sepsis (n=1), outlet obstruction of ileal S pouch (n=1), perforation during pouchoscopy (n=1), and peritoneal carcinomatosis with enterocutaneus fistula (n=1)...

INTRODUCTION: About 35% of patients with Crohn's disease develop fistulae. Treatment of those changes is a complicated clinical problem. Anti-TNF alpha antibodies are currently the most effective therapy of fistulizing Crohn's disease. Aim of the study is to evaluate results of anti-TNF alpha treatment in patients with fistulizing Crohn's disease. METHODS: We evaluated results of anti-TNF alpha treatment (both with adalimumab n=10 and infliximab n=19) in 29 patients with fistulizing Crohn's disease treated in years 2008 - 2011 in Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic of University Hospital in Krakow...

Crohn's disease (CD) is a lifelong disease arising from an interaction between genetic and environmental factors, but seen predominantly in the developed countries of the world. The precise etiology is unknown and therefore a causal treatment is not yet available. Fistulating Crohn's disease includes fistulas arising in the perianal area, together with those communicating between the intestine and other organs or the abdominal wall. Non perianal fistulas include fistulas communicating with other viscera (urinary bladder, vagina), loops of intestine (enteroenteral fistulas) or the abdominal wall (enterocutaneus fistulas)...

INTRODUCTION: Enterocutaneous fistulas are an important complication of gastrointestinal surgery. Most of the cases (75% to 85%) are secondary to postoperative complications and are related to a high morbi-mortality rate, mainly sepsis, malnutrition and fluid and electrolyte imbalance. The aim of this study is to describe the main causes of enterocutaneous fistulas and morbi-mortality associated to treatment in the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán...
