One of the less well-documented, potentially modifiable stroke risk factor is the obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, including stroke risk. The article summarizes the pathophysiological factors in sleep apnea syndrome which can increase stroke risk.

Children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the possible risk factors for early atherosclerosis in children with CKD. Endothelial dysfunction, a precursor of atherosclerosis, starts early in renal disease, as indicated by increased carotid artery intima media thickness, carotid arterial wall stiffness, impaired flow mediated dilatation, and coronary artery calcification, which are frequently present in children with CKD...

The coronary illness is the first cause of death and falling ill in the world. It is considered that, in more than 50% of cases, it is about the illnesses of heart and blood vessels as the cause of death. These results indicate the necessity to prevent and to treat correctly the persons suffering from cardivascular illnesses. The coronary illness represents the ischaemia myocardium as the consequence of reduced blood flow through the coronary arteries (one or more branches). There are more and more young persons suffering from this illness...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a risk factor for development of intraoperative and postoperative pulmonary complications. Regarding the type and the extent of surgical procedure, patients with COPD are at risk of aggravation of pulmonary function which leads to complicated perioperative course. In order to reduce perioperative complications, preoperative evaluation and preoperative patient preparation are of great importance. Goals of preoperative preparation and anesthesia in patients with COPD are maintaining ventilation-perfusion ratio, preventing development of hipoxemia, intraoperative brochospasm, pneumothorax and disturbances of cardivascular system...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Calcium channel blockers, beta adrenergic receptor blockers and Na/K ATPase inhibitors are widely used drugs, mainly for cardiovascular diseases. Their pharmacological targets are not restricted to the cardivascular tissue, nociceptive system structures also express similar targets, which strongly suggests a direct effect on pain sensation. To evaluate the pain intensity changes in outpatient groups, who receive these drugs as a therapy, a cross-sectional sampled, randomized patient groups receiving the calcium channel blocker amlodipine for blood hypertension (n=45), beta adrenergic receptor blockers (propranolol, atenolol or pindolol; n=40) for blood hypertension, or digoxin (n=40) for heart failure, were compared to an aparently healthy volunteers control group (n=60)...

NSAIDs contain nonselective cyclooksygenase inhibitors (for COX-1 and COX-2), inhibitors to the preferential COX-2, the coxibs (sulphonamides, methylsulphones, phenylacethic acid derivatives) with 1000 fold selectivities for COX-2. COX-2 enzyme isoform are constitutively expressed in normal gastric tissue in animals and humans, in the cardiovascular system, renal, central nervous system and other. COX-2 is involved in the ischemic preconditioning mechanism and sulphones have a prooxidant activity. COX-2 inhibitors increased risk for thrombotic cardiovascular events...

OBJECTIVE: Oxygen-dependent changes in vascular diameters may be detrimental when the endothelium is dysfunctional. DESIGN: Endothelial responsiveness was evaluated by brachial ultrasound and flow-mediated/nitroglycerin-mediated dilation (FMD/NMD). FMD/NMD was investigated in males with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (mean age 44+/-2 years, n=10) and matched controls without risk factors (44+/-2 years, n=10). FMD/NMD was assessed during normoxia (21% O2, 79% N2), while inhaling hypoxic gas (12...

Thoracic epidural anaesthesia is selected usually to provide adequate postoperative analgesia; however with administration of local anaesthetics to epidural space selective sympatolysis ensues. The effects of this transient sympathectomy on cardivascular, respiratory and other systems deserve certainly some interest as it may influence postoperative morbidity or mortality. Thoracic epidural anaesthesia has succesfully been used in cardiac, thoracic and major abdominal surgery. It provides dynamic analgesia, rapid mobilization, blunted stress response, early extubation with reduced pulmonary complications and also rapid recovery of bowel function...

Low HDL cholesterol level is an independent risk factor in the cardivascular diseases and the therapeutic aim is to increase this. In high risk patients (cardiovascular disease-, diabetic- or metabolic syndrome patients), the target value of HDL cholesterol is more than 1,0 mmol/l in males and 1,3 mmol/l in females. The PPARalpha receptor activity has an expressed impact on the HDL cholesterol metabolism. It has been proved that in addition to fibrates, statins also influence its functioning. Simvastatin, as compared to atorvastatin, increases the HDL cholesterol level in a better way which positive effect has also been proved by the clinical trials...

The analgesic and antipyretic effect of the bark of willow has been known in Egypt and Greece for canturies. The modem era of salicylates starts with a letter sent 1758 by Reverend Edward Stone to The Royal Society in London. He described "an account of the success of the bark of willow in the cure of agues". His report. erroneously attributed to Edmond Stone. was published five years later. The active ingredient of willow bark. The objective of this work was to review nutritional components of the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is not a specific diet plan or diet program but a collection of eating habits that are traditionally followed by the people of the Mediterranean region. There are at least 16 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and food habits vary between these countries according to culture, ethnic background and religion. The Mediterranean diet, containing olive oil, fish, fruits and vegetable is associated with a low rate of cardivascular and cancer diseases...

Improvements in immunosuppressive therapy during the past decade brought about improvements of the long term tolerance of organ allografts. However, the long-term immunosuppressive therapy has an important limitation, because it can increase the risk of cardivascular diseases, infections and tumors. As compared with age-matched healthy population, organ-transplant recipients have an increased incidence of tumors.

Miners of basic professions employed in contemporary metal mining industry are exposed to a range of industrial factors, such as vibration, noise, dustiness, and unfavorable microclimate. Long-term exposure to these factors is hazardous to their health, which is manifested by elevated general and occupational morbidity and a higher rate of biological aging. This is most typical of Far North miners, who are exposed to the combination of the industrial factors and extremal climate and geographic conditions. Research into the health status of miners engaged to underground works and open excavations in regions with contrasting climate and geographic conditions, allowed determination of main industrial risk factors (vibration and noise), leading occupational diseases and groups of high risk of their development (according to the occupation and the length of service)...
