Chemotherapy is the major and most widely used therapeutic strategy for the treatment of a wide variety of cancers. The non-specific/non-targeted drug delivery in chemotherapy leads to undesired side effects in normal and healthy tissues, and insufficient dosages to kill cancerous cells. Now-a-days, smart and intelligent multifunctional targeted nanomedicines based on various nanocarriers (dendrimers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanoparticles, quantum dots, self-emuslifying lipidic systems and carbon nanohorns etc) are being investigated promisingly in cancer treatment...

CONCLUSION: In this study the outcomes from several indices (Category of Auditory Performance, CAP; Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (Revised), PPVT-R; Test of Reception of Grammar, TROG; and Speech Intellegibility Rating, SIR) in three groups of children with different ages at implantation (from 4 to 36 months) with a follow-up time from 4 to 9 years demonstrate that very early cochlear implantation (<11 months) provides normalization of audio-phonologic parameters with no complications...

OBJECTIVE: This study examined mathematical ability in adolescents with bipolar I disorder, compared to adolescents with major depressive disorder and psychiatrically healthy comparison subjects. METHOD: Participants (N=119) included adolescents in remission from bipolar disorder (N=44) or major depressive disorder (N=30), as well as comparison subjects (N=45) with no psychiatric history. Participants were assessed with the following measures: the Wide-Range Achievement Test, Revised 2 (WRAT-R2), Peabody Individual Achievement Test, Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation Task-Oriented Assessment (functional mathematics subtest), Test of Nonverbal Intellegence-2, and a self-report of mathematics performance...

The authors describe a case of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI), as a consequence to the neurosurgical treatment for a complex malformation of the cranio-spinal junction. A 61-year-old woman underwent a transoral-transvelar surgical approach for odontoid resection. One month later surgical fixation of the posterior spine with autologous iliac bone graft was performed. Following these operations the patient presented a marked alteration of speech intellegibility due to hypernasal voice resonance and through incapability to articulate the oral phonemes correctly...

Poor survival rates and the limited palliation afforded by radiotherapy alone, together with progress made in reconstructive surgery in restoring mucosal continuity after large resections, make total glossectomy reasonably indicated for treatment of advanced carcinoma of the tongue. The Authors reviewed 19 cases (17 males, 2 females, mean age 58.4 years) of total and near total glossectomy without laryngectomy treated at National Cancer Institute "Regina Elena" of Rome from 1990 to 1993 in order to evaluate oncological and functional results...

Wechsler intelligence scale IQ distributions from a representative sample of 67 persons with Turner's syndrome are compared with distributions from a control sample of subjects individually matched for age, race, education, and other social characteristics. Among the probands, there is no increased incidence of either severe or moderate retardation, intelligence is similar regardless of karyotype or somatic stigmata, and the characteristic cognitive deficit is similar among both children and young adults.
