Pulmonary involvement is the most common complication in patients with predominantly antibody deficiencies (PADs). Therefore, patients require repeated imaging tests. Unlike high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), lung ultrasonography (LUS) does not expose patients to X-rays or contrast agents, and can be performed even at the bedside. This study aimed to evaluate lung lesions using simultaneous LUS and HRCT in a group of patients with PADs. Twenty-nine adult patients (13 women and 16 men) diagnosed with PADs according to the ESID criteria (23 Common variable immunodeficiency, 2 X-linked agammaglobulinemia, 2 IgG subclass deficiencies, and 2 Unspecified hypogammaglobulinemia) were included in the study...

BACKGROUND: Description of the condition Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes from several Anopheles species, occurs in 87 countries with ongoing transmission (WHO 2020). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2019, approximately 229 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide, with 94% occurring in the WHO's African region (WHO 2020). Of these malaria cases, an estimated 409,000 deaths occurred globally, with 67% occurring in children under five years of age (WHO 2020)...

BACKGROUND: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDD) are a group of immune-related disorders that have a current median delay of diagnosis between six and nine years. Early diagnosis and treatment of PIDD has been associated with improved patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To develop a machine learning model utilizing elements within the electronic health record data that are related to prior symptomatic treatment to predict PIDD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of PIDD patients identified using inclusion criteria of PIDD-related diagnoses, immunodeficiency-specific medications, and low immunoglobulin levels...

Introduction: Excessive vaginal discharge is troublesome for females. The majority of the women seek gynecological consultation due to excessive vaginal discharge. The causes vary from physiological to pathological discharge. Unless the cause is identified and treated, women will remain in distress. The present study was thus carried out to determine the most common cause of the excessive vaginal discharge. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Phuentsholing General Hospital, Chukha, Bhutan, from May 1 to October 31, 2021...

Noncommunicable diseases including cardiovascular diseases are becoming an important part of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care. Echocardiography is a useful noninvasive tool to assess cardiac disease and different echocardiographic abnormalities have been seen previously. The aim of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic abnormalities in HIV-infected patients and factors associated with the findings. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 285 patients with HIV infection including collection of clinical and echocardiographic data...

OBJECTIVES: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is one of the most common primary immunodeficiencies encountered by physicians, yet it is still poorly described and vastly underdiagnosed and underreported. It is characterized by low levels of immunoglobulins IgG, IgM, and IgA, recurrent infections, and an increased incidence of autoimmune conditions and malignancies. Diverse clinical presentation, poor understanding of its true prevalence, and the daunting, rarely ordered, diagnostic testing make this disease incredibly difficult to diagnose in a primary care setting...

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) patients have markedly decreased immune response to vaccinations. In this study we evaluated humoral and T cell-mediated responses against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2) with additional flow cytometric changes in CVID patients receiving booster vaccination with BNT162b2 after two ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. The BNT162b2 vaccine raised the anti-spike protein S immunoglobulin G over the cut-off value from 70% to 83% in CVID, anti-neutralizing antibody had been raised over a cut-off value from 70% to 80% but levels after boosting were significantly less in both tests than in healthy controls (*p=0...

Recurrent and severe respiratory infections, particularly pneumonia, can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. LPS-responsive beige-like anchor protein (LRBA) deficiency is a combined immunodeficiency characterized by a CVID-like phenotype. Affected patients by LRBA and CVID present a wide range of clinical manifestations, including hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent infections, autoimmunity, as well as T cell abnormality. Quantifying the phenotypic features of rare diseases such as inborn errors of immunity (IEI) helps clinicians make diagnoses, classify disorders, and objectify the disease severity at its first presentation as well as during therapy and follow-up. Furthermore, it may allow cross-sectional and cohort comparisons and support treatment decisions such as an evaluation for transplantation. On the basis of a literature review, we provide a descriptive comparison of ten selected scores and measures frequently used in IEI and divide these into three categories: (1) diagnostic tools (for Hyper-IgE syndrome, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome), (2) morbidity and disease activity measures (for common variable immune deficiency [CVID], profound combined immune deficiency, CTLA-4 haploinsufficiency, immune deficiency and dysregulation activity [IDDA], IPEX organ impairment, and the autoinflammatory disease activity index), and (3) treatment stratification scores (shown for hypogammaglobulinemia)...

Since the pathogenicity of these protists has not been fully elucidated, testing for these organisms is not routinely pursued by most laboratories and clinicians. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated cognitive disorders (HAND) is characterized by impaired motor and intellectual functions, as well as mood disorders. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and its receptor TrkB (or NTRK2) mediate the efficacy of antidepressant drugs. Genomic studies of BDNF/TrkB have implicated common single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the pathology of depression. In the current study, we investigated whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1212171, rs1439050, rs1187352, rs1778933, rs1443445, rs3780645, rs2378672, and rs11140800) in the NTRK2 has a functional impact on depression in HIV-positive subjects...
