Incidence of unexpected diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma among operations on benign thyroid surgical diseases (nodular goiter and Graves' disease) was studied in 608 patients within 2008-2009 years in specialized clinic of endocrine surgery. In 56 (9.2%) patients the "incidental" thyroid carcinoma including 43 (77%) - papillary microcarcinoma were diagnosed in histological investigations. In 10 (18%) patients which were performed within the first postoperative week. Repeated surgery demonstrates increased risk of complication (damage of parathyroid glands, recurrent laryngeal nerves and other anatomic structures of neck) considering less favoring conditions for secondary operations, it is worth to implement wider indications to frozen section, radical primary operation (total thyroidectomy at multi-nodular bilateral goiter and Graves' disease), and also maximal complete examination prior to surgery...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
L Q Zhu, Y H Liu, Y B Zhou
Sixty-nine cases of middle aged and senile female Graves' desease (GD) patients suffered from abnormal bone metabolism have been studied. They were divided randomly into group A and B, treated separately with antithyroid drugs (Tapazol and inderal, etc.) in group A, and added with Chinese herbal medicine for tonifying Kidney and promoting blood circulation in group B. Before treatment, patients of both groups showed obvious higher blood calcium (Ca) 24-hour urinary Ca, phosphorus (P) and serum clcitonin (CT) levels than that in normal subjects...

They make note that 43 patients out of the second group, underwent, after a certain time, another cardiological study (negative for heart disease when recluted) due to graveness of the symptoms and 33 risulted holders of heart disease, 24 of whom also affected with EMD...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
N P Dmitrieva
According to the ultrastructural patterns four varieties of follicular cells are recognized in the cell population of the human goiter. The parenchyma of different goiters is composed of the same cell types and varieties. Goiters differ in percentages of these cells. The ultrastructure of the main cell form is correlated with the functional activity of the goiter. The "map" of cell composition of some forms of goiter is given, which may be used for a more exact diagnosis of the goiter, especially in the cases of discrepancy between the light microscopical morphological data and clinical picture of the desease...
