Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegeneration and is the most prevalent form of dementia. Intervention at an early stage is imperative. Although three acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are currently approved for the treatment of mild AD, they are not sufficiently effective. Novel treatments for mild AD are of utmost importance. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of hachimijiogan (HJG), a traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo), in the treatment of mild AD. Methods: This exploratory, open-label, randomized, multicenter trial enrolled patients with mild AD whose score on the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was over 21points...

There is a possibility that the aggresomes that form in the brain in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in the liver where aggresomes like Mallory-Denk Bodies (MDB) form, share mechanisms. MDBs can be prevented by feeding mice sadenosylmethionine (SAMe) or betaine. Possibly these proteins could prevent AD. We compared the literature on MDBs and AD pathogenesis, which include roles played by p62, ubiquitin UBB +1, HSPs70, 90, 104, FAT10, NEDD8, VCP/97, and the protein quality control mechanisms including the 26s proteasome, the IPOD and JUNQ and autophagosome pathways...

The purpose of this work was to construct a consensus prediction algorithm of 'aggregation-prone' peptides in globular proteins, combining existing tools. This allows comparison of the different algorithms and the production of more objective and accurate results. Eleven (11) individual methods are combined and produce AMYLPRED2, a publicly, freely available web tool to academic users (https://biophysics.biol.uoa.gr/AMYLPRED2), for the consensus prediction of amyloidogenic determinants/'aggregation-prone' peptides in proteins, from sequence alone...

Increased lifespan in western societies causes the increase of hospitalization in the old age, notably for patient showing forms of dementia including Altzheimer disease. These patients relate poorly to care givers and nurses, and cases of maltreatment have repeatedly been reported. To prevent abuse and increase patient's quality of life, Gineste and Pelissier (2007) proposed a philosophy of care based on the Humanitude® concept. Acknowledging that being human is being vertical and related to other humans, the pillars of Humanitude® are gaze, touch, talk, and standing...

The mapping of EEG was performed in 100 patients with neurosis-like disorders with diffuse organic changes in the brain of hydrocephalic-atrophic character on CT; in 100 patients with organic psychosis and in 50 patients with Altzheimer's type dementia. 100 normals formed a control group. Three informative EEG signs were revealed (space-frequency alpha-rhythm inversion, beta-rhythm reinforsement, alpha-regularity descendence) that allowed to differentiate brain changes in normals and patients with organic brain damage...

The paper presents a study concerning an influence of cerebrolysin on the efficiency of subsequent therapy with amiridin in patients with mild and moderate dementia of Altzheimer's type (DAT). A study included 2 groups of patients similar in terms of clinical and demographic parameters. The patients of group 1 (23 cases) were treated by amiridin in daily dose of 80 mg during 10 weeks. In group 2 (26 patients) a session of 20 intravenous infusions of cerebrolysin (30 ml in 150 ml of physiologic solution during 4 weeks) preceded the same therapy with amiridin...
