The treatment of digital ulcer (DU) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) has not been established. A 77-year-old female with a refractory DU in SSc on the right foot was transferred to our hospital. Wound healing had not been achieved despite several endovascular treatments (EVT) and minor amputations. We started Waon therapy 5 days per week as an adjunct therapy. She was placed in a far-infrared-ray dry sauna maintained at 45 °C for 15 min, and was subsequently kept to rest with soothing warmth using a blanket for additional 30 min outside the room...

OBJECTIVES: Fire departments have employed far-infrared sauna (FIRS) use as part of post-fire call protocols to address concerns related to carcinogens. The inability of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to fully recover following an emergency call, as demonstrated by heightened sympathetic nervous system activity and delayed parasympathetic nervous system reactivation, has been implicated as a potential factor related to sudden cardiac death. The use of a sauna post-fire call, which has been demonstrated to elevate body temperature, may interfere with the ability of the ANS to fully recover...

Far infrared light has been used in many medical procedures. However, the detailed biological mechanisms of infrared light's effects have not yet been elucidated. Many researchers have pointed out the thermal effects of treatments such as infrared saunas, which are known to increase blood flow. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with gradual decreases in brain blood flow and resulting dementia. In this study, we attempted to clarify the beneficial effects of far infrared light using the 5xFAD mouse, a transgenic model of AD...

AIM: Although it is known that geriatric syndrome is associated with the development of frailty, it is not known whether an amelioration of geriatric syndrome also improves shared risk factors and frailty. METHODS: In total, 67 community-dwelling older people (79.6 ± 6.5 years, 49 women) participated in this study (41 were classified as pre-frail and 26 as frail). We analyzed indices of physical frailty and cognitive depression, exercise tolerance and health-related quality of life as frailty related indices, and the participants completed a questionnaire regarding common geriatric symptoms (cold extremities, leg edema, breathlessness, urinary incontinence, chronic headache, chronic pain, a sense of numbness, anorexia, constipation, insomnia and skin trouble) using numeric ratings...

Background: Waon therapy (WT) is the predominant thermal therapy for chronic heart failure in Japan, involving use of a far-infrared dry sauna. As sauna therapy requires certain equipment not readily available in hospitals, we tested the use of whole-body hot pack thermal therapy (HPTT). We compared the magnitude of skin vasodilation post-HPTT with that post-WT. Methods: We recruited 19 healthy men (age [mean ± S.D.]: 26.8 ± 4.6 years) and employed a simple randomized crossover design. The HPTT required subjects to remain in a supine position on a bed for at least 10 min...

BACKGROUND: Waon therapy improves heart failure (HF) symptoms, but further evidence in patients with advanced HF remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 19 institutes, we prospectively enrolled hospitalized patients with advanced HF, who had plasma levels of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) >500 pg/ml on admission and BNP >300 pg/ml regardless of more than 1 week of medical therapy. Enrolled patients were randomized into Waon therapy or control groups...

Cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction are associated with a pro-inflammatory state and reduced NO bioavailability. Effects on myocardial structural and molecular alterations were compared between Waon therapy (WT; repeated dry sauna therapy) and statin in hypertensive rats. Seven-week-old Dahl salt-sensitive rats were assigned to 4 groups: low-salt (LS) diet, high-salt (HS) diet, HS diet with oral fluvastatin (FL; 10 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks) starting from the age of 9 weeks, and HS diet with WT treatment in a far-infrared dry sauna (39 °C for 15 min followed by 34 °C for 20 min once daily for 4 weeks)...

Waon therapy (WT), which in Japanese means soothing warmth, is a repeated sauna therapy that improves cardiac and vascular endothelial function in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). We investigated whether WT could improve the quality of life (QOL) of CHF patients in addition to improving cardiac function and exercise capacity.A total of 49 CHF patients (69 ± 14 years old) were treated with a 60°C far infrared-ray dry sauna bath for 15 minutes and then kept in a bed covered with blankets for 30 minutes once a day for 3 weeks...

Far infrared (FIR) radiation (λ = 3-100 μm) is a subdivision of the electromagnetic spectrum that has been investigated for biological effects. The goal of this review is to cover the use of a further sub-division (3- 12 μm) of this waveband, that has been observed in both in vitro and in vivo studies, to stimulate cells and tissue, and is considered a promising treatment modality for certain medical conditions. Technological advances have provided new techniques for delivering FIR radiation to the human body...

We report on an audit of 138 ME/CFS patients who attended a private practice and took the ATP Profile biomedical test. The results revealed that all of these patients had measureable mitochondrial dysfunction. A basic treatment regime, based on 1) eating the evolutionary correct stone-age diet, 2) ensuring optimum hours of good quality sleep, 3) taking a standard package of nutritional supplements, and 4) getting the right balance between work and rest, was recommended for all patients. Additions to the basic regime were tailored for each patient according to the results of the ATP Profile and additional nutritional tests and clues from the clinical history...

BACKGROUND: Far infra-red (IFR) therapy was shown to exert beneficial effects in cardiovascular system, but effects of IFR on endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) and EPC-related vasculogenesis remain unclear. We hypothesized that IFR radiation can restore blood flow recovery in ischemic hindlimb in diabetic mice by enhancement of EPCs functions and homing process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Starting at 4 weeks after the onset of diabetes, unilateral hindlimb ischemia was induced in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice, which were divided into control and IFR therapy groups (n = 6 per group)...

Sauna therapy has been used for hundreds of years in the Scandinavian region as a standard health activity. Studies document the effectiveness of sauna therapy for persons with hypertension, congestive heart failure, and for post-myocardial infarction care. Some individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic fatigue, chronic pain, or addictions also find benefit. Existing evidence supports the use of saunas as a component of depuration (purification or cleansing) protocols for environmentally-induced illness...

Repeated sauna therapy (ST) increases endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity and improves cardiac function in heart failure as well as peripheral blood flow in ischemic limbs. The present study investigates whether ST can increase coronary vascularity and thus attenuate cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI). We induced MI by ligating the left coronary artery of Wistar rats. The rats were placed in a far-infrared dry sauna at 41°C for 15 min and then at 34°C for 20 min once daily for 4 wk...
