INTRODUCTION: Papillary intralymphatic angioendothelioma (PILA) is an exceptionally rare metastasizing soft tissue tumor. It tends to arise in the subcutaneous tissues of distal extremities in children. Only four intraosseous PILA cases have been reported until now in English language literature. CASE REPORT: We present a case of PILA arising in the distal femoral epiphysis of a 50-year-old female patient. It started as a relentless pain in her left knee. A plain radiography revealed a radiolucent area in the left internal femoral condyle...

The term "hemangioendothelioma" is used for endothelial neoplasms of intermediate malignancy and describes a group of rare neoplasms having biologic behavior falling in between that of the benign hemangiomas and fully malignant angiosarcomas. The hemangioendotheliomas fall into several specific, clinicopathologically and genetically distinct entities, specifically epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, papillary intralymphatic angioendothelioma and retiform hemangioendothelioma (hobnailed hemangioendothelioma), pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma, composite hemangioendothelioma, and YAP1::TFE3-fused hemangioendothelioma...

The objective of this article is to describe and classify usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) changes according to their relevance in the pathology of the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) process. In a cohort of 50 patients (25♀, 25♂) with UIP findings, the percentage ratio between fibrotic and preserved parts of the lungs was quantified. Three quantitative stages of fibrotic involvement of the lung parenchyma and concomitant changes were defined. These are initial (≤20%), advanced (21-40%), and diffuse (≥41%) fibrosis of the lungs...

BACKGROUND: A BRAF V600E mutation in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has been shown to be associated with aggressive behavior. Nevertheless, not all BRAF V600E PTCs behave aggressively. Allele frequency (AF) is the number of mutated molecules divided by the total number of wild-type molecules at a specific location in the genome. The relationship between BRAF V600E AF and the histopathological features of thyroid malignancies is not well understood. We hypothesized that the BRAF V600E AF will correlate directly with aggressive histopathological behavior...

BACKGROUND: Molecular testing is a well-established tool that assists in the management of thyroid nodules. We describe our experience using molecular testing of thyroid nodules with Bethesda III-VI cytology. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter multinational study of thyroid nodules that underwent preoperative molecular profiling with ThyGenX/ThyGeNEXT or ThyroSeq V3 between 2015-2022. The clinical characteristics and mutational profiles of tumors were compared. Collected data included demographics, cytology results, surgical pathology, and molecular alterations...

SUMMARY: We report a 61-year-old male patient without personal history of thyroid carcinoma or radiation exposure. In 2011, he presented with a cervical mass whose biopsy diagnosed a papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in a lymph node metastasis (LNM). Total thyroidectomy with lymphadenectomy of central and ipsilateral compartment was performed. Histopathology identified a 2 mm follicular variant of PTC and LNM in 25/25 lymph nodes. The patient was treated with 150 mCi of radioactive iodine (RAI), followed by levothyroxine suppressive therapy...

The cytological features of the hobnail variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma may be subtle. It is important to recognize this variant because it may influence the corresponding surgical treatment and follow-up due to its aggressive nature. The hobnail subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma is a rare entity with aggressive features. It presents extrathyroidal extension or lymph nodal metastasis in a high percentage of the cases.

AIMS: Anastomosing haemangiomas are benign tumours with anastomosing vascular channels that may mimic angiosarcoma. While anastomosing haemangiomas have been described in diverse locations, particularly the abdominal/paraspinal region, data on anastomosing haemangiomas in the mediastinum remain limited. We report the clinicopathological, radiological and molecular characteristics of the largest single-institutional series of mediastinal anastomosing haemangiomas. METHODS AND RESULTS: In our pathology archives in 2011-23, we reviewed all vascular lesions involving the mediastinum and identified seven anastomosing haemangiomas...

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) demonstrates a wide variety of morphologies and is characteristically associated with a differentiated thyroid carcinoma component. Heterologous differentiation is a rare, potentially challenging phenomenon in ATC, mostly observed as osteosarcomatous or chondrosarcomatous differentiation. We now describe a novel 'glomangiosarcoma-like' differentiation, review our archival experience from two institutions (UPMC, CC), and perform a systematic review for the prevalence of heterologous elements in ATC...

Methods: Clinicopathological data and prognostic conditions of 18 cases with hepatic angiosarcoma were collected retrospectively. The recurrence-free survival rate and overall survival rate were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox regression analysis was used to explore the survival-related risk factors. Results: There were 12 male and 6 female patients, with an average age of 57 (37 ~ 70) years...

OBJECTIVES: Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) rarely involves the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This study describes clinicopathologic features of LCH in a cohort of GI cases. METHODS: We defined lobular capillary hemangioma as "a proliferation of capillary-sized blood vessels arranged at least focally in a lobular configuration," searched departmental archives for cases, and recorded clinicopathologic findings. RESULTS: We identified 34 GI tract LCHs from 16 men and 10 women; 4 patients had multiple lesions...

Nephrogenic adenoma is a benign lesion of the urothelial tract characterized by tubules surrounded by thick, hyalinized basement membranes. There is a great variety of architectural patterns within nephrogenic adenomas, including patterns that mimic malignancy, such as focal clear or hobnail cells, areas of significant nuclear atypia, mitosis, and isolated cystic changes. This represents a diagnostic pitfall, where a malignant lesion can be mistaken for a nephrogenic adenoma, leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment that adversely affects the outcome...

Immunohistochemistry and comprehensive sequencing using a panel 447-gene coverage were performed in suitable cases. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is usually indolent; however, some rare subtypes of PTCs, such as columnar cell and hobnail subtypes, carry poor prognosis as an intermediate malignancy between differentiated carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma. We present the case of a 56-year-old Japanese woman having PTC with aggressive behavior showing characteristic histological features of a predominantly fused follicular and focally solid (FFS) pattern. The fused follicular pattern is cribriform-like without intermingled vessels...
