Objective: To investigate the clinical features and genetic features of combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 32 (COXPD32) caused by MRPS34 gene variation. Methods: The clinical data and genetic test of a child with COXPD32 hospitalized in the Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics in March 2021 were extracted and analyzed. A literature search was implemented using Wanfang, China biology medicine disc, China national knowledge infrastructure, ClinVar, human gene mutation database (HGMD) and Pubmed databases with the key words "MRPS34" "MRPS34 gene" and "combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 32" (up to February 2023)...

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is an inflammatory syndrome with life-threatening organ dysfunction and high mortality. In the recent 10 years, high-dose intravenous injection of vitamin C, the first-line antioxidant of humans, has received highlighted attention in the field of critical care. The study aims to examine the efficacy and safety of high-dose intravenous injection of vitamin C in the treatment of sepsis. METHODS AND DESIGN: Here, we are conducting a prospective, multi-centered, double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled superiority study named High-Dose Vitamin C on Sepsis (HDVCOS)...

Pneumonia caused by coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, has been spread around the world already becoming a pandemic. Unfortunately, there is not yet a specific vaccine or effective antiviral drug for treating COVID-19. Many of these patients deteriorate rapidly and require intubation and are mechanically ventilated, which is causing the collapse of the health system in many countries due to lack of ventilators and intensive care beds. In this document we review two simple adjuvant therapies to administer, without side effects, and low cost that could be useful for the treatment of acute severe coronavirus infection associated with acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2)...

The analgesic benefit of melatonin and vitamin C as primary or adjuvant agents has been reported in various studies; however, their analgesic effects in the treatment of postoperative pain remain unclear. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of single preoperative dose of oral melatonin or vitamin C administration on postoperative analgesia. In this study, we recruited 165 adult patients undergoing elective major abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. Patients were randomly divided into three equal (n = 55) groups...

The effect of microchip-pulsed electric field (MPEF) and high temperature short time sterilization (HTST) technologies on microbiological, physicochemical properties and flavor of freshly squeezed blueberry juice were compared. Under the MPEF treatment at 350 V, total plate count, total yeast and molds were completely inactivated, meanwhile, VitaminC, anthocyanin, total phenols, titratable acid and color had no significantly changes. During storage of 30 days at 4 °C, VitaminC decreased by 11...

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori infections affect almost 50% of the world population, constituting a risk factor for benign and malignant gastrointestinal diseases. The increased resistance to antibiotic treatment against this infection represents a dilemma in the search of other therapeutic alternatives. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of the use of vitaminC and E supplements concomitantly to antibiotic treatment against H. pylori infections. METHODS: We performed a systematic review on the MedLine (PubMed), Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Clinical Trials (CENTRAL) databases, searching for studies evaluating the efficacy of vitaminC and/or E supplements in the antibiotic treatment of H...

BACKGROUND: In many studies, chemicals and natural materials were tested to reduce the harmful effects of radiation. It is known that Famotidine and vitamin C reduce DNA damage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radioprotective effect of vitamin C, Cimetidine and Famotidine on gamma-radiation-induced damage on mouse bone marrow. METHODS: Six-to-seven week male NMRI mice (28 g ±3) were randomly divided into fourteen groups: control, 2Gy irradiation, six group drugs without irradition (Famotidine, Cimetidine, vitaminC, Fam-Cim, Fam-Vit, Cim-Vit), six groups received drugs and 2Gy radiation with a 60Co |γ|-ray source at room temperature 22 ± 2 °C...

In the present study, the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)s is modified by ascorbic acid (AA) (vitaminC) for their dispersion improvement in the starch matrix. Then, the starch-based nanocomposites (NCs) containing 3, 6 and 9wt% of AS modified MWCNTs (AA-MWCNT)s were fabricated via ultrasonication method. Characterization of the prepared NCs was accomplished by different techniques. The optimum MWCNT content for the generation of fine electrical conductivity was found to be about 3wt%, indicating better dispersion of AA-MWCNT with low amount of AA-MWCNT...

Increased concentrations of dietary fish oil and antioxidants have been shown previously to change circulating concentrations of individual fatty acids (FAs) and vitamin E. The purpose of this study was to further investigate the effects of vitamins E and C, in combination with dietary fish oil, on selected blood and urinary biomarkers. Fifty adult Beagle dogs (mean age 5.3 years, range 1.4-14.2 years) were randomized into five dietary treatment groups for 90 days. All foods were complete and balanced and met the nutrient profiles of AAFCO for adult dogs...

Hepatotoxic substances such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) produce free radical reactions during biotransformation damage to liver cells. Vitamins C and E are important natural antioxidants suppressing free radicals. This study investigated the effects of vitamins C and E on liver enzymes and other biochemical parameters in rabbits experimentally exposed to AFB1. The first group was control and fed the diet with dimethyl sulfoxide; the second group received 0.1 mg AFB1/kg diet; the third group received vitamin C (100 mg L-ascorbic acid/kg diet); the fourth group received vitamin E (100 mg alpha-tocopherol/kg diet); and the fifth group received vitamin C+vitamin E (100 mg L-ascorbic acid/kg diet+100 mg alpha-tocopherol/kg diet)...
