Over the past decade, endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has become an indispensable tool in the diagnostic armamentarium of the pulmonologist. As the expertise with EBUS-TBNA has evolved and several innovations have occurred, the indications for its use have expanded. However, several aspects of EBUS-TBNA are still not standardized. Hence, evidence-based guidelines are needed to optimize the diagnostic yield and safety of EBUS-TBNA. For this purpose, a working group of experts from India was constituted...

An overwhelming number of people with HIV (PWH) experience chronic widespread pain (CWP) throughout their lifetimes. Previously, we demonstrated that PWH with CWP have increased hemolysis and attenuated heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) levels. HO-1 degrades reactive, cell-free heme into antioxidants like biliverdin and carbon monoxide (CO). We found that high heme or low HO-1 caused hyperalgesia in animals, likely through multiple mechanisms. In this study, we hypothesized that high heme or low HO-1 caused mast cell activation/degranulation, resulting in the release of pain mediators like histamine and bradykinin...

Chronic widespread pain (CWP) is associated with a high rate of disability and decreased quality of life in people with HIV-1 (PWH). We previously showed that PWH with CWP have increased hemolysis and elevated plasma levels of cell-free heme, which correlate with low endogenous opioid levels in leukocytes. Further, we demonstrated that cell-free heme impairs β-endorphin synthesis/release from leukocytes. However, the cellular mechanisms by which heme dampens β-endorphin production are inconclusive...

INTRODUCTION: Individual and community characteristics predictive of knowledge, perception, and attitude on COVID-19, specifically on gender, have not been adequately explored. OBJECTIVE: To examine the gender differences in COVID-19 knowledge, self-risk perception and public stigma among the general community and to understand other socio-demographic factors which were predictive of them. METHOD: A nationally representative cross-sectional multi-centric survey was conducted among adult individuals(≥18 yrs) from the community member (N = 1978) from six states and one union territory of India between August 2020 to February 2021...

Typhoid fever is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease that presents itself with a wide array of symptoms ranging from uncomplicated fever to sepsis with multiorgan dysfunction syndrome. An 18-year-old male college student presented with progressively increasing fever with abdominal discomfort, anorexia, and persistent vomiting. Typhoid fever was suspected in view of clinical findings along with leukopenia, grossly elevated transaminases, and acute kidney injury. He was managed with intravenous (IV) antibiotics, which resulted in the resolution of fever and other symptoms...

Copper sulfate occurs as large blue crystals in nature, commonly known as "blue vitriol" or "blue stone." It is a potentially lethal poison with significant mortality. Copper sulfate is a powerful oxidizing agent and causes corrosive injury to the mucous membrane. The clinical course involves intravascular hemolysis resulting in anemia, jaundice, and renal failure. Laboratory diagnosis of the condition is not an issue; the difficulty is suspecting it, promptly initiating chelation therapy, and other supportive symptomatic treatment...

BACKGROUND: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an alternative method of wound management for spontaneous healing. However, availability and high cost of a conventional NPWT system remain a challenge. Bates Jensen wound assessment tool (BWAT) has been used to assess wound healing in diverse wound treatments. Although there have been studies evaluating change in BWAT score following application of commercially available NPWT device, there is no literature evaluating change in BWAT score following use of wall-mounted low-cost NPWT device...

A simple non-invasive procedure to detect early impairment of the acoustic nerve and auditory pathway is by auditory brainstem response (ABR). It's a response to the sound stimulus generated from the brainstem in the form of electrical impulses. To determine the effect of long-term usage of mobile phones on auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). This Epidemiological, cross-sectional study was undertaken at a tertiary care hospital and includes 865 individuals aged between 18 to 45 years using mobile phone for > 2 years...

It is not to be confused with CC ligament which is a well-known anatomical entity. CASE REPORT: Here, we present a case of symptomatic CC joint treated at our hospital. Concomitant hepatitis A virus (HAV) and amoebic liver abscess are to be considered in patients with clinical signs and symptoms of fever, jaundice, and right upper quadrant pain, especially in endemic areas. Both diseases had similar epidemiology and identical mode of transmission, i.e., the feco-oral route. We report a case of a young female with simultaneous infection of HAV and amoebic liver abscess, emphasizing the role of dual infection and its clinical manifestations.

In acute lung injury (ALI), the NF-κB-mediated downregulation of Sox18 gene expression leads to the disruption of the pulmonary endothelial barrier. Previous studies have suggested that the action of NF-κB as a transcriptional repressor also requires the action of class I histone deacetylases (HDACs). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate and further delineate the mechanism of Sox18 repression during lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced ALI. Using selective inhibitors and specific siRNA-driven depletion of HDACs 1-3 in human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVEC) we were able to demonstrate a critical role for HDACs 1 and 2 in the LPS-mediated repression of Sox18 gene expression and the loss of endothelial monolayer integrity...
