PURPOSE: High-fat (HF) feeding induces hypothalamic leptin resistance via the activation of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). TLR4 deficiency confers resistance to diet-induced obesity. Udenafil, an anti-impotence drug, inhibits TLR4 in airway epithelial cells in vitro. In this study, we evaluated whether udenafil suppressed the hypothalamic expression of TLR4 and reduced body weight. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hypothalamic expression of TLR4, phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), and myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (Myd88) was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction after treating mice for 2 days with udenafil (0, 12, 120, or 600 μg/d)...

Motivation: The identification of repetitive elements is important in genome assembly and phylogenetic analyses. The existing de novo repeat identification methods exploiting the use of short reads are impotent in identifying long repeats. Since long reads are more likely to cover repeat regions completely, using long reads is more favorable for recognizing long repeats. Summary: In this study, we propose a novel de novo repeat elements identification method namely RepLong based on PacBio long reads...

Chemical cues from sessile hosts can attract mobile and associated organisms and they are also impotant to maintain associations and overall biodiversity, but the identity and molecular structures of these chemicals have been little explored in the marine environment. Secondary metabolites are recognized as possible chemical mediators in the association between species of Laurencia and Aplysia, but the identity of the compounds has not been established. Here, for the first time, we experimentally verify that the sesquiterpene (+)-elatol, a compound produced by the red seaweed Laurencia dendroidea, is a chemical cue attracting the associated sea hare Aplysia brasiliana...

The treatment of recurring low-flow priapism with the usual medications is still unsatisfactory. The case of an otherwise healthy young man experiencing low-flow priapism at the age of 31 is presented. A reason for his condition could not be identified. Over the course of several months, he required emergency urological treatment more than ten times. Treatment with cyproterone acetate (Androcur® 50 mg/day) stopped the spontaneous erections, but resulted in erectile impotence, reduced motivation, decreased interest in sex, weight gain of 10 kg, breast enlargement combined with touch sensitivity on both sides, and hair loss on both legs...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cistanches Herba is an Orobanchaceae parasitic plant. As a commonly used Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), its traditional functions include treating kidney deficiency, impotence, female infertility and senile constipation. Chemical analysis of Cistanches Herba revealed that phenylethanoid glycosides, iridoids, lignans, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides were the main constituents. Pharmacological studies demonstrated that Cistanches Herba exhibited neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, hormonal balancing, anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotection, anti-oxidative, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-tumor effects, etc...

The current therapy for penile fracture is immediate surgical repair, but sexual and psychosocial effects of the repair have been poorly investigated. We aimed to assess the impact of surgical correction of penile fracture on psychosocial status, sexual function, and erectile quality. Sixty-four patients classified into two subgroups according to follow-up: 2-24 months (Group 1), and longer than 24 months (Group 2), and 28 healthy men (Control group). The mean overall follow-up period was 39.1±32.7 months...

BACKGROUND: Optimal anti-epileptic drug (AED) treatment maximises therapeutic response and minimises adverse effects (AEs). Key to therapeutic AED treatment is adherence. Non-adherence is often related to severity of AEs. Frequently, patients do not spontaneously report, and clinicians do not specifically query, critical AEs that lead to non-adherence, including sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction prevalence in patients with epilepsy ranges from 40 to 70%, often related to AEDs, epilepsy or mood states...

PURPOSE: To examine the findings of existing studies in relation to men's cultural beliefs about changes to their bodies relevant to prostate cancer and how these affect interpretation of bodily changes and help-seeking actions. METHOD: We undertook a narrative review of studies conducted from 2004 to 2017 in 6 databases that highlighted men's beliefs and help-seeking actions for bodily changes suggestive of prostate cancer. RESULTS: Eighteen (18) studies reflecting men from various ethnicities and nationalities were included...

Introduction Some studies advocate a laparoscopic extralevator abdominoperineal excision (l-ELAPE) approach for low rectal cancer. The da Vinci™ robot (r-ELAPE) technique has potential to overcome some limitations of l-ELAPE, such as reduction of the learning curve and more precise tissue handling. It is unknown whether this approach results in improved surgical or quality of life outcomes compared with l-ELAPE. This study aimed to address this issue. Methods Consecutive patients having undergone either robotic or laparoscopic ELAPE for adenocarcinoma were studied...

Introduction: Infertility is known to have a negative effect on couple's life and in most cases it has a profound impact on sexual relations. Sexual problems may be the cause of infertility or may arise as a result of infertility. The aim of this study was to compare the sexual problems in fertile and infertile couples. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 110 infertile and 110 fertile couples referring to Montaserieh infertility center and five health centers in Mashhad which were selected as class clustering method and easy method...

We evaluated the role of dopamine (DA) transporter gene polymorphism in lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) and its role in determining the response to paroxetine and escitalopram. Eighty consecutive patients and controls were recruited. Sixty of them suffered from LPE. They were divided into two equal groups. One group received paroxetine 20 mg daily for 3 months and the other one received ecistalopram 20 mg daily for 3 months. Their wives were instructed to measure the intra-vaginal ejaculation latency time using stopwatch...

Tunica albuginea plication (TAP) surgery for Peyronie's disease (PD) is classically described using nonabsorbable suture. Many patients are aware of nodularity at the suture sites (50-88%), and some find them painful (10-33%). We explore whether limiting permanent sutures provides a durable correction of curve and report the incidence of bothersome nodules. Beginning in 2007, we modified our TAP procedure to limit the use of permanent sutures. We reviewed all patients who underwent TAP procedures from 2007 to 2014 at our institution...
