The hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid is an essential subject since formic acid is a promising hydrogen storage material and a valuable commodity chemical. In this study, we report for the first time the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid catalyzed by a Pd2+ catalyst, Pd-V/AC-air. The catalyst exhibited extraordinary catalytic activity toward the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid. The TON and TOF are up to 4790 and 2825 h-1 , respectively, representing the top level among reported heterogeneous Pd catalysts...

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a critical issue for patients undergoing surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) but has never been assessed in a low-income country. We conducted a cross-sectional mixed methods study with age-matched healthy siblings serving as controls at the Uganda Heart Institute. METHODS: One-hundred fifteen CHD pediatric and young adult patients and sibling control participants were recruited. Health-related quality of life was assessed using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4...

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a major health problem worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality with every hour delay in initiation of therapy. A conventional method of blood culture and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) takes around 48-72 hours. Empirical antibiotics need to be administered until the sensitivity report is made available. It has been estimated that 20-50% of the empirical antibiotics are inappropriate, resulting in prolonged hospital stays, adverse effects, and emergence of drug resistance...

PURPOSE: Candida auris is increasingly being isolated from patients all over the world. It has five clades. In this study, it was aimed to compare the results of biochemical tests obtained using different methods and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of C. auris strains isolated from the first seven cases reported in Türkiye, and evaluate whether this information could be useful as preliminary data in determining the clade of strains in centers that lack the opportunity to apply molecular methods...

Camellia saponins are important by-products of Camellia Oleifer Abel. processing. In this study, an eco-friendly method based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs, proline and glycerol at a molar ratio of 2:5) was established to extract saponins from C.oleifera cakes. The content of saponin (702.22 ± 1.28 mg/g) obtained using NaDES was higher than those extracted using water or methanol. UPLC-Q-TOF MS analysis of chemical structure showed that the difference in the extraction technique alter individual saponins...

Fungal laccase has strong ability in detoxification of many environmental contaminants. A putative laccase gene, LeLac12, from Lentinula edodes was screened by secretome approach. LeLac12 was heterogeneously expressed and purified to characterize its enzymatic properties to evaluate its potential use in bioremediation. This study showed that the extracellular fungal laccase from L. edodes could effectively degrade tetracycline (TET) and the synthetic dye Acid Green 25 (AG). The growth inhibition of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by TET revealed that the antimicrobial activity was significantly reduced after treatment with the laccase-HBT system...

A method was developed for the determination of tropane alkaloids (TAs), including atropine, scopolamine, anisodamine and homatropine in buckwheat and related products. This work presents an optimised methodology based on QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) extraction procedure followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the determination of TAs (atropine, scopolamine, anisodamine and homatropine) in buckwheat samples. The analytical methodology was successfully validated, demonstrating good linearity, low limit of quantification, repeatability (RSDr  < 15%), inter-day precision (RSDR  < 19%) and recovery (74-113%)...

The red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) represents North America's most important aquaculture species. Its hepatopancreas is rich in cellulases and other polysaccharide-degrading enzymes, which provide it the remarkable ability to digest cellulose-rich macroalgae; nevertheless, its cellulolytic systems are poorly explored. This manuscript describes some functional and structural properties of an endogenous trimeric glycosylated endoglucanase from H. rufescens. The purified enzyme showed a molecular mass of 23...

This work discusses the effectiveness of the previously developed comprehensive calculation model to optimize linear MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers. The model couples space- and velocity-focusing to precisely analyze the flight-time distribution of ions and predict optimal experimental parameters for the highest mass resolving power. Experimental validation was conducted using a laboratory-made instrument to analyze CsI3 and angiotensin I ions in low to medium m / z range. The results indicate that the predicted optimal extraction voltage and delay were reasonably accurate and effective...

To understand the mode of action of bioactive oligosaccharides, such as prebiotics, in-depth knowledge about all structural features, including monosaccharide composition, linkage type, and anomeric configuration, is necessary. Current analytical techniques provide limited information about structural features within complex mixtures unless preceded by extensive purification. In this study, we propose an approach employing cyclic ion mobility spectrometry (cIMS) for the in-depth characterization of oligosaccharides, here demonstrated for disaccharides...

Stenosis severity may escalate over the course of coronary artery disease (CAD), increasing the risk of death for the patient. Conventionally, the assessment of stenosis degree relies on invasive coronary angiography (ICA), an invasive examination unsuitable for patients in poor physical condition or those with contrast allergies and one that imposes a psychological burden on patients. Although abnormal serum N-glycan profiles have exhibited robust associations with various cardiovascular diseases, including CAD, their potential in diagnosing CAD stenosis remains to be determined...

He-Ying-Qing-Re formula (HF), a traditional Chinese medicinal concoction, has been identified as an efficient therapy for DR with retinal vascular dysfunction for decades and has been experimentally reported to ameliorate retinal conditions in diabetic mice. This study endeavors to explore the therapeutic potential of HF with key ingredients in DR and its underlying novel mechanisms...

Blood flow index (BFI) is an optically accessible parameter, with unit distance-squared-over-time, that is widely used as a proxy for tissue perfusion. BFI is defined as the dynamic scattering probability (i.e. the ratio of dynamic to overall reduced scattering coefficients) times an effective Brownian diffusion coefficient that describes red blood cell (RBC) motion. Here, using a wavelength division multiplexed, time-of-flight- (TOF) - resolved iNIRS system, we obtain TOF-resolved field autocorrelations at 773 nm and 855 nm via the same source and collector...

A group of Gram-negative plant-associated diazotrophic bacteria belonging to the genus Nitrospirillum was investigated, including both previously characterized and newly isolated strains from diverse regions and biomes, predominantly in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and recA genes revealed the formation of a distinct clade consisting of thirteen strains, separate from the formally recognized species N. amazonense (the closest species) and N. iridis. Comprehensive taxonomic analyses using the whole genomes of four strains (BR 11140T  = AM 18T  = Y-2T  = DSM 2788T  = ATCC 35120T , BR 11142T  = AM 14T  = Y-1T  = DSM 2787T  = ATCC 35119T , BR 11145 = CBAmC, and BR 12005) supported the division of these strains into two species: N...
