For decades, there has been debate about the cause of ingrown nail: is the nail plate or the periungual tissue at fault? There is no consensus and management relies on case-by-case analysis followed by tailored treatment. Conservative treatment should be attempted in children when the cause is transient (e.g., poor clipping) or the patient refuses surgery. Surgical treatments rely on two main approaches: either narrowing the nail plate, or debulking the soft tissue. It is up to the surgeon to select the most appropriate approach in each case...

Performing artists, such as dancers, singers, actors and musicians, rely on their physical bodies to successfully execute their artforms. However, literature regarding dermatologic conditions that impact dancers is lacking. An anonymous REDCap® secure survey was distributed by email to Dance Majors, Dance Minors, and Dance Instructors/Professors at five Virginia undergraduate institutions. Responses regarding demographics, style of dance, and dermatological diseases were recorded over a 2 month period...

BACKGROUND: Skin conditions are associated with psychological symptoms and may be particularly distressing for skin of color (SoC) individuals. SoC consumers' decisions to pursue dermatology care may be negatively impacted by the scarcity of skin tone diversity in dermatology. This survey explored SoC consumers' perspectives on dermatologic care to provide insight into the psychosocial burden of skin disease. METHODS: Beacon Science conducted an anonymous web-based survey in August 2022 among self-selected consumers...

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: We aimed to identify the frequency and risk factors of pre-ulcerative lesions of foot in Japanese individuals with diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-center cross-sectional observational study. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 5029 individuals with diabetes (mean age 63 years; 2185 women; 1015 individuals with type 1 diabetes and 4014 individuals with type 2 diabetes) who (a) participated in the Diabetes Study from the Center of Tokyo Women's Medical University: DIACET 2018, and (b) responded to the presence of pre-ulcerative lesions of foot...

Nevoid melanoma (NeM) is a rare variant of malignant melanoma characterized by slight cellular atypia, polymorphism, and incomplete maturation. It most frequently occurs on the trunk and arms but rarely on the foot. Here, we report a subungual NeM of the right hallux. A 65-year-old man presented with severe pain of 6 months' duration to his right great toe following self-treatment for an ingrown nail. He was evaluated and treated with debridement of the toenail at an urgent medical center 3 months prior. However, this had not relieved his pain...

BACKGROUND: When performing nail surgery, clinicians must choose from a multitude of procedures and variations within each procedure. Much has been published to guide this decision making, but there are a lack of up to date robust systematic reviews to assess the totality of this evidence. METHODS: Five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and CENTRAL) and two registers (Clinicaltrials.gov and ISRCTN) were searched to January 2022 for randomised trials evaluating the effects of a surgical intervention(s) for ingrown toenails...

Pincer nail is a deformity characterized by excessive transverse curvature of nail, progressively increasing along its longitudinal axis. The curvature is greatest at the distal end, leading to an ingrown nail, producing pain, discomfort, and significant cosmetic alteration. It is a severe variant of ingrown nail, often attributed to causes such as anatomical variation of nail plate axis, tight footwear, gait abnormalities, and so on. Correspondingly, its management involves the removal of the lateral ingrowing nail plate or the lateral hypertrophic nail folds...

BACKGROUND: Ingrown toenails are a common condition requiring outpatient procedures in podiatric medical clinics. To prevent recurrence, chemical matrixectomy is often recommended. Postprocedural pain management is largely based on preferences rather than on a formal guideline. This study aims to explore the postprocedural prescribing behavior among practicing podiatric physicians to foster future guideline and policy development. METHODS: We administered an open, voluntary, anonymous questionnaire via an online survey platform that included a common nail procedure scenario (chemical matrixectomy) and a prescribed demographics section...

Despite recent narrative reviews, there is a need for an up-to-date and rigorous systematic review of surgical methods for treating ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails are most common among school-age children and adolescents though they can be observed at any age. Causes of ingrown toenails are increased curvature, trauma, and external pressure. Treatment of ingrown toenails can be broadly characterized as conservative and surgical. Conservative treatment can be performed using various methods, such as a gutter splint, dental floss, and cotton. Surgical treatments may be divided into two main approaches; narrowing of the nail plate and debulking of periungual tissues...

In this study, metal 3D printing technology was used to create lattice-shaped test specimens of orthopedic implants to determine the effect of different lattice shapes on bone ingrowth. Six different lattice shapes were used: gyroid, cube, cylinder, tetrahedron, double pyramid, and Voronoi. The lattice-structured implants were produced from Ti6Al4V alloy using direct metal laser sintering 3D printing technology with an EOS M290 printer. The implants were implanted into the femoral condyles of sheep, and the animals were euthanized 8 and 12 weeks after surgery...

Unguis incarnatus (ingrown toenail) is a common problem in daily practice. Persons with unguis incarnatus stage two and three are often referred for surgical partial nail excision, however conservative treatment or minimal-invasive alternatives exist. In the latest Dutch guideline for ingrown toenails, there is minimal attention to these alternatives. A podiatrist can do a spiculectomy and places a bilateral orthonyxia (nail brace) or tamponnade afterwards. This treatment option was studied in a prospective cohort study in 88 persons with high risk for wound healing problems and was found to be a safe and effective treatment option...

BACKGROUND: The long-term application of tunneled central venous catheters leads to the development of firm adhesions between the wall of the vein and the catheter, which makes removal of the catheter difficult or impossible. The treatment options in such cases include abandonment of catheter parts or an open surgical approach up to sternotomy. At present, procedural alternatives are available, which include endovascular techniques such as the use of laser energy and endoluminal dilatation...

BACKGROUND: The concern of the global community of gynecologists and obstetricians (FIGO) regarding the increase in the number of caesarean sections has resulted in the creation of a new classification, Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS), which presents degrees of villus invasion into the uterine wall. OBJECTIVE: Compare the main types of atypical placentation (AP) with the stages of PAS, to supplement and unify the clinical and morphological criteria AP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgical material was examined from 73 women after metroplasty ( n =61) and hysterectomies ( n =12) from the regions of Russia, Moscow and the Moscow region for ingrown villi and from 10 women with a typical placenta location during the first cesarean section...
