Serratia marcescens  is a gram-negative bacillus that is an opportunistic agent in respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and septicemia. It is rarely a cause of infective endocarditis, but in cases of endocarditis, it follows a rapid and devastating course. A previously healthy female in her mid-50s presented with fever, abdominal pain, right lower extremity pain, and diarrhea. Blood cultures were positive for  S. marcescens ,  and additional evaluation revealed infarction in the spleen and kidneys, raising concern for endocarditis with associated embolic phenomena...

Introduction: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a bacillus that can cause cutaneous and systemic diseases in humans. Studies on the infection caused by this bacterium have been mostly done as case reports. This study aimed to systematically review E. rhusiopathiae infection cases published over the last 20 years. Methods: Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were searched using appropriate keywords to find relevant studies. After assessment of the studies, 57 case reports which surveyed 62 patients were included and their data were collected and analyzed...

A rare and difficult to diagnose case of subacute infective endocarditis caused by Bacillus cereus in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and Libman-Sacks endocarditis has been reported. Our aim is to highlight the importance of molecular methods such as MALDI-TOF and PCR to explain clinical and epidemiological issues about infections caused by unusual pathogen.

Pseudomonas mendocina is a Gram-negative bacillus from the family Pseudomonadaceae. The first P. mendocina -related infection was reported in 1992. Although a rare cause of infections, P. mendocina has been known to cause severe infections that require intensive treatment. We present the first documented case of urinary tract infection caused by P. mendocina. An 83-year-old male with a past medical history of diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, and prostate cancer with bone metastases, currently being treated with abiraterone and prednisone, presented with subjective fever, fatigue, altered mental status, dysuria, and hematuria of one-week duration...

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic, yellow-pigmented, glucose non-fermenting, gram negative bacillus that is a rare cause of human infection found mostly in the immunocompromised and also in intravenous (IV) drug users. We report a case of a 31-year-old female with current IV drug use, who presented with chest pain and was diagnosed with tricuspid valve endocarditis with S. paucimobilis bacteremia and pulmonary infarction of the right middle lobe. The patient initially presented with sharp right sided chest pain...

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a gram-positive bacterial species that is utilised as a probiotic in humans and animals. There are no reports of infective endocarditis (IE) in dogs. An 8-year-old, spayed, female Maltese presented with a 1-month history of fever, depression, weight loss, and hindlimb lameness. Laboratory test results indicated non-regenerative anaemia, neutrophilia, hyperglobulinemia, and proteinuria. Echocardiography revealed vegetation on the septal leaflet of the mitral valve and thromboemboli in the left atrium...

Corynebacterium striatum is an emerging Gram-positive bacillus associated with invasive infection in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, especially associated with medical devices. Its ability to form biofilms has been demonstrated and it has been occasionally associated with cardiac device-related infective endocarditis with few cases described in literature. We report a case of C. striatum cardiac device-related infective endocarditis of complex management.

We present a case of polymicrobial subacute bacterial endocarditis and bacteremia with Bacillus cereus and Cardiobacterium hominis in a 72-year-old man with pre-existing mitral valve disease and prior mitral valve repair who presented with renal failure and glomerulonephritis. Bacillus is often a contaminant in blood cultures but has been rarely implicated in patients with invasive infections such as endocarditis. Intravenous drug use, prosthetic heart valves, valvular heart disease and venous catheters are the most frequently described risk factors for Bacillus bacteremia and endocarditis in the medical literature...

Infective endocarditis (IE) secondary to Staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus species comprises the majority of cases in literature with Gram negative bacterial insults occurring infrequently. Serratia marcescens is a Gram negative bacillus which is classified as motile, non-lactose fermenting, and a facultative anerobe. The presumed risk factor for the development of S. marcescens IE is intravenous drug use (IVDU). We report two cases of IE causes by S. marcescens : first case describes IE of tricuspid and aortic valve requiring surgical intervention further complicated by epidural abscess...

Actinomyces Odontolyticus is a gram-positive bacillus, usually found in the oropharynx, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, as commensal flora. Infections caused by this organism are rare but may occur, more commonly in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of a 54-year-old man, who presented to the emergency department (ED), with fever and chills. The patient had undergone an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) insertion, 5 months prior to his arrival, and was diagnosed with Actinomyces Odontolyticus bacteremia, during the hospitalization...

Leclercia adecarboxylata is a motile, gram negative bacillus in the Enterobacteriaceae family that is a rarely isolated cause of disease, despite being ubiquitous in nature. A 2019 review article identified only 74 reported cases, most often in immunocompromised patients [1]. The organism is generally susceptible to most antibiotics although multiantibiotic resistant strains have been reported. We report a case of a 62-year-old Caucasian man with multiple co-morbidities treated for L. adecarboxylata endocarditis with intravenous ceftriaxone...

We report a case of mechanical mitral valve endocarditis associated with miliary disseminated bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) infection following intravesical instillations for minimally invasive bladder cancer in a 65-year-old man. The diagnosis was established by echocardiographic evidence of vegetation on the prosthetic mitral valve, miliary lesions in the lungs and evidence of bloodstream infection sustained by Mycobacterium . Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardium and/or heart valves that involves thrombus formation (vegetation). This condition might damage the endocardial tissue and/or valves. An indwelling central venous catheter is a major risk factor for bacteremia at-risked pediatric populations such as premature infants; children with cancer and/or connective tissue disorders. Herbaspirillum huttiense is a Gram-negative opportunistic bacillus that may cause bacteremia and pneumonia rarely in this fragile population...

Bartonella henselae is a zoonotic Gram-negative Bacillus associated with self-limited regional lymphadenopathy. In recent decades, an expanding spectrum of clinical manifestations has been described, in part, due to improved diagnostics. However, updated epidemiological data are sparse. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features of 31 patients with B. henselae infection over 15 years from 2005 to 2019, in the tropical Top End of Australia. Our annual disease incidence of 1.3 cases per 100,000 population is lower than that in the national database surveillances in the United States, but the hospitalization incidence of 0...

Corynebacterium jeikeium is a gram-positive, aerobic, pleomorphic, nonspore forming bacillus, commonly present on the skin surface. Infective endocarditis secondary to C. jeikeium most commonly affects left-sided heart valves and has a higher likelihood to require valve replacement compared to other Corynebacterium endocarditis. C. jeikeium endocarditis is extremely difficult to treat as it is characteristically resistant to penicillin, cephalosporins and aminoglycosides, and sensitivity to quinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines and rifampin is variable...
