A microfluidic-based method for the continuous synthesis of Ag@Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) has been developed. It only took 32s to obtain Ag@Cu2O core-shell NPs, indicating a high efficiency of this microfluidic-based method. Triangular Ag nanoprisms were employed as the cores for the overgrowth of Cu2O through the reduction of Cu(OH)4(2-) with ascorbic acid. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, HAADF-STEM, EDX, HRTEM, UV-vis spectra and N2 adsorption-desorption. The characterization results revealed that the as-synthesized Ag@Cu2O core-shell NPs exhibited a well-defined core-shell nanostructure with a polycrystalline shell, which was composed of numbers of Cu2O domains epitaxially growing on the triangular Ag nanoprism...

Introduction Poor blood flow rate (PF) is highly prevalent among CKD 5D patients with long-term central venous catheters. Heparin catheter lock solutions are commonly used to maintain catheter patency, however the incidence of PF remains high. The purpose of the CLOCK Trial was to evaluate two catheter lock solutions on reduction of PF incidence. Methods Seventy-five CKD 5D patients on high-efficiency hemodialysis at the Integrated Centre of Nephrology (Guarulhos, Brazil) were randomized 1:1:1 to receive a lock solution combining minocycline 3 mg/mL with the anticoagulant/chelation agent EDTA 30 mg/mL (M-EDTA) or heparin 1000 IU/mL (H) or trisodium citrate 30% (TSC) vs...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Overfeeding in critically ill patients is associated with many complications. Propofol, dextrose infusion and citrate dialysis provide non-nutritional calories (NNCs), potentially causing overfeeding. The relevance of NNCs for total caloric intake has not been systematically studied. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We retrospectively studied adult mechanically ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients receiving enteral nutrition with or without supplemental parenteral nutrition...

The synthesis of a novel family of cyano-bridged trimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) with various compositions and shapes has been reported by changing the compositional ratios of Fe, Co, and Ni species in the reaction system. In order to efficiently control the nucleation rate and the crystal growth, trisodium citrate dihydrate plays an important role as a chelating agent. After the obtained cyano-bridged trimetallic CPs undergo thermal treatment in air at three different temperatures (250, 350, and 450 °C), nanoporous spinel metal oxides are successfully obtained...

BACKGROUND: Use of the Freedom SOLO (FS) stentless aortic bioprosthesis is limited by a unique and as yet unexplained severe decrease in postoperative platelet count in the absence of FS-related excess bleeding or thromboembolism. We investigated whether anticoagulant-associated pseudothrombocytopaenia could explain this complication. METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients (mean age 75.4±7.7 years, 11 [36.7%] female) underwent elective aortic valve replacement (AVR) with either the stented bovine Mitroflow (MF, n=18) or the stentless bovine FS (n=12) aortic valve bioprostheses...

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheters (CVC) are the only option when hemodialysis is needed for patients without definitive vascular access. However, CVC is associated with complications, such as infection, thrombosis, and dysfunction, leading to higher mortality and expenditures. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of 30 % trisodium citrate (TSC30 %) with heparin as CVC lock solutions in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and dysfunction in hemodialysis patients...

An alkaline starch suspension was charged with citric acid and incubated for different durations (0, 8.5 or 17h). The suspension was then supplemented with caffeine and gelatinized to fabricate hydrogels which were subsequently stored for varying periods (0, 24 or 48h). Charging of the well-dissolved alkaline starch suspension with citric acid decreased at first both the flow index and consistency coefficient (K); however, starch cross-linking over time by the generated trisodium citrate increased the K value...

A novel catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was prepared using carboxyl group-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), polymer matrix, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The AgNPs were prepared by the reduction of silver nitrate by trisodium citrate in the MWCNTs-polymer nanocomposite; the size of the synthesized AgNPs was found to be 3nm (average diameter). The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized using several analytical techniques. Ag@MWCNTs-polymer composite in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in aqueous solution is an effective catalyst for the reduction of 4-NP...

In our research, the commercial TiO2 (Degussa P25) was modified with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) by reduction reaction with trisodium citrate. A remarkable influence of pH on particle size, size distribution and dispersion of Au on TiO2 support was observed. The size of Au NPs on TiO2 surface decreased with increase in the pH of the precursor solution. The increase of pH involved a transformation of [AuCl4]- complexes to [Au(OH)xCl(4-x)]- complexes which could induce strong Au-TiO2 interactions, resulted in uniform dispersion of Au NPs...

BACKGROUND: The requirements for magnesium (Mg) supplementation increase under regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) because citrate acts by chelation of bivalent cations within the blood circuit. The level of magnesium in commercially available fluids for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) may not be sufficient to prevent hypomagnesemia. METHODS: Patients (n = 45) on CRRT (2,000 ml/h, blood flow (Qb) 100 ml/min) with RCA modality (4% trisodium citrate) using calcium free fluid with 0...

INTRODUCTION: Hypernatremia is common among hospitalized patients especially in the intensive care units and presents an independent risk factor for mortality. Mild hypernatremia is often asymptomatic but severe hypernatremia causes central nervous system dysfunction with initial non-specific symptoms of encephalopathy that may progress to seizures, coma and death, if left untreated. Severe hypernatremia is a medical emergency and requires emergent medical attention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A haemodialysis patient who arrived for his scheduled haemodialysis treatment had monthly blood work drawn and was reported to have severe hypernatremia with serum sodium concentration of 183 mmol/L...

The crystal structure of anhydrous tris-odium citrate, Na3(C6H5O7), has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory (DFT). There are two independent five-coordinate Na(+) and one six-coordinate Na(+) cations in the asymmetric unit. The [NaO5] and [NaO6] polyhedra share edges and corners to form a three-dimensional framework. There are channels parallel to the a and b axes in which the remainder of the citrate anions reside. The only hydrogen bonds are an intra-molecular one between the hy-droxy group and one of the terminal carboxyl-ate O atoms and an intermolecular one between a methylene group and the hydroxyl O atom...

In vitro antithrombogenic testing with mock circulation is a useful type of pre-evaluation in ex vivo testing of mechanical assist devices. For effective in vitro testing, we have been developing a clear quantitative thrombogenesis model based on shear stress and blood coagulability. Bovine blood was used as the test medium. The activating clotting time (ACT) was adjusted with trisodium citrate and calcium chloride from 200 to 1,000 seconds. The blood was then applied to a rheometer and subjected to shear at 50 to 2,880 s-1...
