This study investigated the use of infrared thermography (IRT) to identify the dark, firm, and dry (DFD) phenomenon in Brazilian beef, which is a significant concern for the industry because of its inferior quality and reduced shelf life. This study examined 113 Nellore bulls and analyzed their minimum and maximum ocular temperatures using IRT. The results highlight the efficacy of thermal images (IRTmax) as a significant predictor, with R2 values ranging from 0.84 to 0.88 for calibration models. The inclusion of parameters such as glucose and lactate further enhanced prediction accuracy...

The American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes castration to be important for both human and animal safety. Lidocaine delivered through-the-needle has been shown to be effective at reducing cortisol response to castration, but this method has drawbacks for both animals and caretakers. As such, a study was conducted to examine the potential benefits of lidocaine delivery using a pneumatic needle-free device immediately before standing bovine castration. Twelve Holstein bulls weighing 400.7 ± 39...

This paper presents a simple engineering method for evaluating the optical power emitted by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using infrared thermography. The method is based on the simultaneous measurement of the electrical power and temperature of an LED and a heat source (resistor) that are enclosed in the same plastic packaging under the same cooling conditions. This ensures the calculation of the optical power emitted by the LED regardless of the value of the heat transfer coefficient. The obtained result was confirmed by comparing it with the standard direct measurement method using an integrated sphere...

Even though the influence of the printing direction on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed samples by fused filament fabrication is established in the literature, very little is known about mechanical and electrical coupling. In this study, electrically conductive polylactic acid filled with carbon black particles undergoes monotonic and repeated progressive tensile loading to better understand the influence of the printing direction on the electro-mechanical properties of three-dimensional-printed samples...

Infrared Thermography (IRT) has become an assistance tool in medicine and is used to noninvasively evaluate heat elimination during and after inflammatory processes or during the recovery period. However, its application in veterinary patients undergoing physiotherapy is a field that requires deep research. This review aims to analyze the application of IRT in the monitoring of animal physiotherapy, using the thermal changes that are present in patients undergoing gait or lameness issues (e.g., inflammation, pain, increased local temperature) as a neurobiological basis...

The collection and examination method of vaginal smears is the standard for the determination of ovulation or phases of the estrous cycle of rodents used in research. However, this method is time consuming and may not be amenable to continual monitoring of a large number of animals. Infrared thermography has recently emerged as a noninvasive technique that requires relatively little handling of animals. The body temperature of rodents has been shown to correlate with the ocular surface temperature. This study aimed to evaluate the use of thermographic monitoring of the ocular surface for the identification of estrus in rats...

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy surgery represents a therapeutic opportunity for those patients who do not respond to drug therapy. However, an important challenge is the precise identification of the epileptogenic area during surgery. Since it can be hard to delineate, it makes it necessary to use auxiliary tools as a guide during the surgical procedure. Electrocorticography (ECoG), despite having shown favorable results in terms of reducing post-surgical seizures, have certain limitations. Brain mapping using infrared thermography mapping and a new thermosensitive/thermochromic silicone (TTS) in epilepsy surgery has introduced a new resource of noninvasive and real-time devices that allow the localization of irritative zones...

This study aimed to explore the mechanism of cooking intensity on the tenderness of stir-fried pork slices from the perspective of the changes in temperature distribution. Infrared thermal imaging was used to monitor the distribution of temperature. Results showed that the high-level heat (HH) treatment could improve tenderness. When the center temperature increased to 100 °C, the shear force of samples from the low-level heat (LH) group increased by around 3-fold, and HH reduced this upward trend...

We developed a broadband two-layer anti-reflection (AR) coating for use on a sapphire half-wave plate (HWP) and an alumina infrared (IR) filter for the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarimetry. Measuring the faint CMB B-mode signals requires maximizing the number of photons reaching the detectors and minimizing spurious polarization due to reflection with an off-axis incident angle. Sapphire and alumina have high refractive indices of 3.1 and are highly reflective without an AR coating. This paper presents the design, fabrication, quality control, and measured performance of an AR coating using thermally sprayed mullite and Duroid 5880LZ...

By measuring the temperature-dependent fluorescence emission of the liposomes using a spectrometer, we identify four characteristic temperatures...

Herein, guided by the results of density functional theory prediction, the study rationally designs a hollow core-shell FeNi2 S4 @ZnIn2 S4 (FNS@ZIS) Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction for photocatalytic H2 evolution with photothermal-assisted. The hollow FNS spheres offered substrate for coating the ZIS nanosheets, which can inhibit ZIS nanosheets from agglomerating into pellet, enrich the active site, increase specific surfaces, and raise the light absorption. Notably, due to its excellent photothermal properties, FNS core generated heat unceasingly inside under visible-light irradiation and effectively prevent the heat loss of the reaction system, which increased the local temperature of photocatalysts and thus accelerated the charge migration...

BACKGROUND: : Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a unique thermogenic tissue in mammals mediated by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). The energy generated by glucose and triglyceride metabolism is released and transmitted throughout the body as heat. Understanding the factors influencing BAT function is crucial to determine its metabolic significance and effects on overall health. Although studies have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) at specific acupoints (e.g., ST36) can stimulate BAT, its effects at other acupoints are not well understood...

The microstructure of the in situ TiC-reinforced composite surface layers developed during laser surface alloying of a ductile cast iron substrate with titanium was related to the solidification conditions in the molten pool. The solidification conditions were estimated using infrared thermography. It was found that the cooling rates of the melt up to about 700 °C/s enable the complete reaction between carbon and the entire amount of titanium introduced into the molten pool. In turn, the cooling rate of about 280 °C/s for the melt containing 8...

Heat stress is a condition that can affect the health, performance, and welfare of farm animals. The perception of thermal stress leads to the activation of the autonomic nervous system to start a series of physiological and behavioral mechanisms to restore thermostability. One of these mechanisms is vasodilation of peripheral blood vessels to increase heat loss through the skin. Due to this aspect, infrared thermography has been suggested as a method to assess the thermal state of animals and predict rectal temperature values noninvasively...

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a highly prevalent multi pathogen infectious disease (70-80%) in newly received feedlot cattle, causing significant economic losses and reduced animal welfare. Current BRD diagnosis involves stressful and invasive methods that can increase the incidence and transmission of BRD. An alternative is the use of an automated infrared thermography (IR) platform that can monitor facial temperature and behaviour traits to diagnose BRD in a non-invasive manner. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of fidget and drinking behaviours in conjunction with facial temperature as method of BRD diagnosis in beef calves...
