Continuous monitoring of bladder activity during normal daily activities would improve clinical diagnostics and understanding of the mechanisms underlying bladder function, or help validate how differing neuromodulation strategies affect the bladder. This work describes a urological monitor of conscious activity (UroMOCA). The UroMOCA included a pressure sensor, urine impedance-sensing electrodes, and wireless battery recharge and data transmission circuitry. Components were assembled on a circuit board and encapsulated with an epoxy/silicone molded package that allowed Pt-Ir electrode feedthrough for urine contact...

Proteus mirabilis , a prevalent urinary tract pathogen and formidable biofilm producer, especially in Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection, has seen a worrying rise in multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. This upsurge calls for innovative approaches in infection control, beyond traditional antibiotics. Our research introduces bacteriophage (phage) therapy as a novel non-antibiotic strategy to combat these drug-resistant infections. We isolated P2-71, a lytic phage derived from canine feces, demonstrating potent activity against MDR P...

BACKGROUND: With ever increasing rates of emergency caesarean deliveries (CD),incorporating the ERAS protocol might provide a perfect window of opportunity to increase maternal comfort during the postsurgical period, but also improve outcomes and facilitate optimal return of physiological function. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an ERAS pathway at emergency caesarean birth would permit a reduction in postoperative length of stay and improve postoperative patient satisfaction...

Microplastics (MPs) are found in all environments, within the human food chain, and have been recently detected in several human tissues. The objective herein was to undertake an analysis of MP contamination in human urine samples, from healthy individuals and participants with endometriosis, with respect to their presence, levels, and the characteristics of any particles identified. A total of 38 human urine samples and 15 procedural blanks were analysed. MPs were characterised using μFTIR spectroscopy (size limitation of 5 μm) and SEM-EDX...

The overactive bladder is a condition characterized by a sudden urge to urinate, even with small volumes of urine present in the bladder. The current treatments available for this pathology consist on conservative approaches and the continuous administration of drugs, which when made by conventional methods has limitations related to the first pass metabolism, bioavailability, severe side effects, and low patient adherence to treatments, ultimately leading to low effectiveness. Within this context, the present work proposes the design, manufacture, and characterization of an intravesical implant for the treatment of overactive bladder pathology, using EVA copolymer as a matrix and oxybutynin as a drug...

BACKGROUND: Foley catheters have been subject to limited development in the last few decades. They fulfil their basic function of draining urine from the bladder but cause other associated problems. T-Control is a new silicone Foley catheter with an integrated fluid control valve whose design aims to reduce the risks associated with bladder catheterization by a multifactorial approach. The general purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness, comfort, and experience of the patient catheterized with T-Control® compared with patients with a conventional Foley catheter...

Pelvic fractures sometimes lead to injuries of the urinary bladder, which commonly present as gross hematuria, dysuria and lower abdominal pain. As a type of urinary stone, bladder stones are usually secondary to lower urinary tract obstruction, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, urethral stricture, and neurogenic bladder. The present case report examines an unusual case of a delayed pubic fracture penetrating the bladder, which caused a secondary bladder stone. A 53-year-old man was first hospitalized at The Second Hospital of Jiaxing (Jiaxing, China) in January 2020 because of trauma-induced bleeding in the scalp and abdominal pain...

PURPOSE: Convective water vapor thermal therapy or "Rezum™" treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms in men with benign prostate hypertrophy require postoperative catheterization to avoid acute urinary retention. Unsuccessful catheter removal is still unpredictable. We, therefore, aimed to identify the risk factors of failed initial trial without catheter (TWOC) after Rezum™ therapy inside a large cohort of patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent Rezum™ therapy by three referent urologists across two academic hospitals between January 2022 and January 2023...

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance among Enterobacterales continues to be a growing problem, particularly in those with urinary infections. Previous studies have demonstrated safety and efficacy with the use of single-dose aminoglycosides in uncomplicated cystitis. However, data in complicated infections are limited. Single-dose aminoglycosides may provide a convenient alternative for those with or at risk for resistant pathogens causing complicated urinary infections, especially when oral options are unavailable due to resistance, allergy, intolerance, or interactions with other medications...

Heat stress (HS) is a global issue that decreases farm profits and compromises animal welfare. To distinguish between the direct and indirect effects of HS, 16 multiparous Holstein cows approximately 100 d in milk were assigned to one of 2 treatments: pair fed to match HS cow intake, housed in thermoneutral conditions (PFTN, n = 8) or cyclical HS (n = 8). All cows were subjected to 2 experimental periods. P1 consisted of a 4 d thermoneutral period with ad libitum intake. During P2, the HS cows were housed in cyclical HS conditions with a temperature humidity index (THI) ranging from 76 to 80 and the PFTN cows were exposed to a constant THI of 64 for 4 d...

The standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). However, this procedure may miss small lesions or incompletely remove them, resulting in cancer recurrence or progression. As a result, intravesical instillation of chemotherapy or immunotherapy drugs is often used as an adjunctive treatment after TURBT to prevent cancer recurrence. In the traditional method, drugs are instilled into the patient's bladder through a urinary catheter under sterile conditions...

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is difficult in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition causing frequent urination, because of the large prostate volume and particularly true when BPH is accompanied by an enlarged middle lobe. To overcome this difficulty, some surgeons elevate the middle lobe with a third arm or tow the urethral catheter to the edge to identify the resection line. Herein, we describe a method for lifting a prostate with an enlarged middle lobe, which was successfully applied in a patient with prostate cancer and BPH...
