Gender and environmental factors are known to influence the clinical heterogeneity and outcome of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Some variables have been suggested to be associated with the severity of the disease, which can be of great value in the correct management of RA patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among anticyclic citrullinated antibody (anti-CCP2) positivity, extra-articular manifestations (EAM), gender, and tobacco exposure in a Brazilian RA population. We performed a transversal study comprising 156 RA patients which were investigated for EAM, functional class, presence of anti-CCP2, and IgM rheumatoid factor (IgM-RF)...

OBJECTIVE: To show the complications that increase the permanence at intensive care unit (ICU) of the patients submitted to cardiac surgery. METHODS: Eighty-five handbooks of patients submitted to cardiac surgery had been analyzed, retrospectively, from March to May 2009 at Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Juiz de Fora (MG)--Brazil--and 14 (16.47%) patients had been studied. They remained more than 5 days at ICU. In 85 patients occurred three deaths: two patients operated in urgency character and this increases the morbidity; one patient who remained in mechanical ventilation (MV) by 21 days...

Three patients with progressive visual loss, chronic alcoholism and tabagism were submitted to a complete neuro-ophthalmic examination and to retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) measurements using optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning. Two patients showed marked RNFL loss in the temporal sector of the optic disc. However, a third patient presented RNFL measurements within or above normal limits, based on the Stratus-OCT normative database. Such findings may be due to possible RNFL edema similar to the one that may occur in the acute phase of toxic optic neuropathies...

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to evaluate the rate of smoker adolescents in Zaghouan, to seek for the smoking reasons, the used arguments, recording to them, to stop, and show their knowledge about prevention. METHODS: A prospective study included 266 teenagers scolarised: 194 boys and 72 girls (aged from 12 to 16 years) from 3 colleges located in Zaghouan during 2006. A questionnaire was drawn up on these adolescents. It contains three parts: tabagic habits of smoking teenagers, the reasons of smoking and information about prevention...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies support the association between migraine, especially migraine with aura, and vascular disorders. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is largely used as a surrogate of peripheral obstructive arterial disorders (POAD). Accordingly, in this study we contrasted the ABI in individuals with migraine and in controls. METHODS: We investigated 50 migraineurs and 38 controls and obtained the ABI (ratio between the systolic arterial pressure obtained in the legs and in the arms) using digital sphygmomanometry...

AIM/BACKGROUND: Development on progress in cerebral vascular pathology. METHOD: Research on PubMed concerning advances on Neurovascular diseases during the last twenty years. RESULTS: Stroke incidence and prevalence have shown an increase for a few years. High blood pressure (HBP) is well the main risk factor; the implication of tabagism, even passive, and of hormone substitutive therapy were also proven. This study investigated the correlation of sPLA2 (secretory phospholipase A2) activity with the atheromatosis extent in subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing coronary angiography. We analyzed 123 patients, including 35 subjects with angiographically normal coronary arteries (controls), 31 with mild/moderate atheromatosis (stenosis of 30-70% of the luminal diameter in one or more coronary arteries) and 57 with severe atheromatosis (>70% stenosis). Plasma sPLA2 activity was significantly higher in subjects with severe [127...

OBJECTIVES: Fibroadenoma is the most common benign mammary condition among women aged 35 or younger. Expression of Ki-67 antigen has been used to compare proliferative activity of mammary fibroadenoma epithelium in the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety eumenorrheic women were selected for tumour excision; they were assigned to either of the two groups, according to their phase of menstrual cycle. At the end of the study, 75 patients with 87 masses were evaluated by epithelial cell Ki-67 expression, blind (no information given concerning group to which any lesion belonged)...

From recent biochemical parameters found in patients' files, women have been grouped in 'case' and 'control'. Osteoporosis is a major public health problem. For the time being, the diagnosis of osteoporosis relies on densitometry (T-score < -2.5 by DXA), although the risk of fracture depends also on other factors than the bone mass. Osteoporosis diagnosis (DXA) must be distinguished from the individual risk assessment of fracture. Different risk factors complementary to bone mass have been already validated in different populations. These include an old age, a history of fracture after the age of 50, a familial history of hip fracture (father or mother), a low BMI (< 20), corticoid treatment (> 3 months), tabagism and excessive alcohol consumption...

Precancerous states of the oral mucosa refers to pathologies in which there is a risk of malignancy development, compared to normal mucosa. Some histological alterations characteristic of precancerous lesions can be easily detected in a biopsy of the lesion, allowing their classification, and hence adequate treatment. A systematic examination of the oral mucosa in patients is recommended, especially in patients who show risk factors such as tabagism and/or alcohol consumption, in order to contribute to a decrease in the incidence of malignant tumor of the oral cavity...
