The past few decades have been a time of rapid and constantly-accelerating development in every field of medicine, including pediatrics and laryngology. The first pediatric laryngology unit set up in Poland was in the Warsaw Kopernik Hospital in 1908, and consisted of seven beds in the surgical ward. The actual development of the specialty in Poland began in the nineteen-forties. The first modern department of Pediatric Laryngology was set up in the Mother and Child Institut in 1947, and next in Warsaw University Hospital in 1956...

The Bam Earthquake caused one of the most destructive disasters from naturally occurring hazards in recent years. Children are one of the most vulnerable age groups during disasters, in terms of both physical and psychological injuries. The assessment of pedatric injuries in the aftermath of the Bam Earthquake is discussed is this article. Within one week of the Earthquake, 119 patients < 16 years of age were admitted to three tertiary-level referral hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Extremity, chest, and abdomen, and head and spinal column injuries were present in 83, 17, and 36 patients, respectively...

Between April and October 1997, 21 children of 4 days to 13 years old were admitted to the Pedatric Unit of Aulnay Sous Bois's Hospital for viral meningitidis. The number of white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was between 1 and 612 cells/mm3, with, on an average, 56% of segmented cells, 34% lymphocytes and 34% monocytes. Proteins and glucose of CSF were standard. One CSF was normal. Viral meningitidis was confirmed by viral culture of CSF onto MRC5. Enterovirus were identified by direct immunofluorescence (Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Enterovirus, Dako)...
