Scrub typhus is a re-emerging disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi , transmitted by mites belonging to the family Trombiculidae . Humans and rodents acquire the infection by the bite of larval mites/chiggers. Suncus murinus , the Asian house shrew, has been reported to harbor the vector mites and has been naturally infected with O. tsutsugamushi . The present study aimed to localize and record O. tsutsugamushi in the tissues and the host response in shrews naturally infected with O. tsutsugamushi . Sheehan's modified May-Grunwald Giemsa staining was carried out in 365 tissues from 87 animals, and rickettsiae were documented in 87 tissues from 20 animals...

Worldwide, oak species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, pathogens, and changing fire regimes. Ex situ conservation through tissue culture may protect the remaining genetic diversity of Quercus dumosa , or the coastal sage scrub oak, from further loss. We designed three basal salt formulations based on the mineral composition of shoot tips and first leaves from mature Q. dumosa and explored carbohydrate source, stress-mitigating compounds, and plant growth regulator concentrations to develop a method of cultivating many Q...

Orientia tsutsugamushi is an obligate intracellular bacterium associated with trombiculid mites and is the causative agent of scrub typhus, a life-threatening febrile disease. Strain typing of O. tsutsugamushi is based on its immunodominant surface antigen, 56-kDa type-specific antigen (TSA56). However, TSA56 gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis is only partially congruent with core genome-based phylogenetic analysis. Thus, this study investigated whether concatenated surface antigen sequences, including surface cell antigen (Sca) proteins, can reflect the genome-scale phylogeny of O...

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is an acute infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune-mediated peripheral neuropathy with a frequent history of prodromal infections, but GBS associated with scrub typhus is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 51-year-old male patient who developed dysarthria and peripheral facial paralysis following the cure of scfrub typhus. CSF examination and electrophysiological findings suggested a diagnosis of GBS...

INTRODUCTION: We have observed inconsistencies in residents' experiences regarding important procedures and tasks necessary for patient care. We aimed to improve individual motivation to learn and become facile with specific practices earlier in the timeline of the internship years. METHODS: Intern Bingo was implemented in a single general surgery residency. Two sites, both tertiary care centers with institutional practices, were utilized. Twenty-four procedures/tasks important to clinical practice were identified, including but not limited to Nasogastric Tube placement, IV insertion, incision and drainage, laceration repair, vascular doppler exam, and clinical documentation...

Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi , is a re-emerging zoonotic disease in the tropics with considerable morbidity and mortality rates. This disease, which is mostly prevalent in rural areas, remains underdiagnosed and underreported because of the low index of suspicion and non-specific clinical presentation. Limited access to healthcare, diagnostics, and treatment in rural settings further makes it challenging to distinguish it from other febrile illnesses. While easily treatable, improper treatment leads to severe forms of the disease and even death...

Scrub typhus shows a high prevalence in South-East Asia. In pregnant females, it can cause both maternal and fetal adverse outcomes. We report a case series of two women with scrub typhus and their varied outcomes. A 25-year-old primigravida treated for scrub typhus at 23 weeks' gestation presented at 34 weeks with stage three fetal growth restriction (FGR). Caesarean delivery was performed. The neonate had biliary atresia. A 24-year-old primigravida at 31 weeks' gestation was referred from a local hospital due to scrub typhus induced multi-organ dysfunction...

The Periacetabular Osteotomy is a technically demanding procedure that requires precise intraoperative evaluation of pelvic anatomy. Fluoroscopic images pose a radiation risk to operating room staff, scrubbed personnel, and the patient. Most commonly, a Standard Fluoroscope with an Image Intensifier is used. Our institution recently implemented the novel Fluoroscope with a Flat Panel Detector. The purpose of this study was to compare radiation dosage and accuracy between the two fluoroscopes. A retrospective review of a consecutive series of patients who underwent Periacetabular Osteotomy for symptomatic hip dysplasia was completed...

BACKGROUND: The standard of care for disinfecting needleless connectors (NCs) of central venous catheters includes alcohol-containing caps or up to a 15-second scrub with alcohol or chlorhexidine. Due to the clinical impact and high cost of treating Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), reducing the incidence of CLABSI is a priority for public health and of the CDC. Alcohol-containing caps have been demonstrated to disinfect external NC surfaces, but not the internal surface...

OBJECTIVES: The standard process of central sterilization is crucial for the optimal functioning of the operating room. The outcome of this process is closely linked to the steps preceding the steps prior to the sterilization step itself. These steps include pre-disinfection carried out in the operating rooms and other stages, namely washing, drying and packaging, which must be performed in the central sterilization unit. In this context, this study aimed to describe the knowledge of the staff in the operating rooms and the central sterilization unit at Sahloul University Hospital in Sousse (Tunisia) in 2022, regarding the steps prior to the sterilization of reusable thermoresistant medical devices and to describe their practices in terms of compliance with these steps...

Rickettsial infections are emerging and/or re-emerging disease that poses a serious global threat to humans and animals. This review is aimed at analyzing the prevalence of rickettsiosis in India and the advancement of rickettsial diagnosis. We have conducted a systematic review on the prevalence of rickettsial disease in India ranging from 1...

Scrub typhus, a tropical rickettsial infection, can have various neurological manifestations. BACKGROUND: Trombiculid mites are globally distributed, highly diverse arachnids that largely lack molecular resources such as whole mitogenomes for the elucidation of taxonomic relationships. Trombiculid larvae (chiggers) parasitise vertebrates and can transmit bacteria (Orientia spp.) responsible for scrub typhus, a zoonotic febrile illness. Macular amyloidosis is primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis (PLCA). It is described by the extracellular accumulation of heterogenic amyloid proteins in the skin that does not affect the systemic immune system, causing hyperpigmented patches. It is a prevalent skin disorder of young female adults, especially in India, since it affects the population with darker skin. History of frictional rub on the skin is typically present, such as using loofah or bathing scrubs or stones. The case presented below is of a 23-year-old female who presented with a hyperpigmented patch on the upper back of both sides and extensor surface of arms and did not have any history of usage of loofah on those areas, compelling us to research more on the other causative factors (genetic predisposition, infectious agents, and UV radiation are probable causative factors) for macular amyloidosis...

Mites are highly prevalent arthropods that infest diverse ecological niches globally. Approximately 55,000 species of mites have been identified but many more are yet to be discovered. Of the ones we do know about, most go unnoticed by humans and animals. However, there are several species from the Acariformes superorder that exert a significant impact on global human health. House dust mites are a major source of inhaled allergens, affecting 10-20% of the world's population; storage mites also cause a significant allergy in susceptible individuals; chiggers are the sole vectors for the bacterium that causes scrub typhus; Demodex mites are part of the normal microfauna of humans and their pets, but under certain conditions populations grow out of control and affect the integrity of the integumentary system; and scabies mites cause one of the most common dermatological diseases worldwide...
