BACKGROUND: Readmissions reflect adverse patient outcomes, and clinicians currently lack accurate models to predict readmission risk. OBJECTIVE: We sought to create a readmission risk calculator for use in the postoperative setting after elective colon and rectal surgery. DESIGN: Patients were identified from 2012-2014 American College of Surgery-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data. A model was created with 60% of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program sample using multivariable logistic regression to stratify patients into low/medium- and high-risk categories...

BACKGROUND: Hospital readmission rate is an important quality metric and has been recognized as a key measure of hospital value-based purchasing programs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the risk factors for hospital readmission with a focus on potentially preventable early readmissions within 48 hours of discharge. DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study. SETTINGS: This study was conducted at a tertiary academic facility with a standardized enhanced recovery pathway...

Cerebral feohifomycosis are severe infections caused by dematiaceous fungi. Cladophialophora bantiana is one of the most commonly isolated species; it has central nervous system tropism and it often manifests as a brain abscess in immunocompetent patients. In immunocompromised patients, it can lead to brain abscesses and disseminated infections. Despite the availability of broad-spectrum antifungal drugs, it is a must to perform surgical management, in addition to drug therapy. However, mortality is high. The diagnostic approach must be invasive to establish a timely diagnosis and direct treatment based on culture and susceptibility tests...

Sixty-five cases of enterobiasis of the cecal appendix are reported by Enterobius vermicularis or Oxiurus vermicularis. Enterobiasis is a cosmopolitan parasite5,8,13 and frequent. It is useful to establish whether it can cause appendicitis and the mechanisms involved. According to the classical literature, E. vermicularis is not a causative agent of appendicitis per se, but allows the reproduction of the germs that infiltrate the wall and produce appendicitis5,9,10. The purpose of the study is to report the prevalence of E...

CONTEXT: Supplemental perioperative oxygen has been variously reported to halve or double the risk of surgical wound infection. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that supplemental oxygen reduces infection risk in patients following colorectal surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial of 300 patients aged 18 to 80 years who underwent elective colorectal surgery in 14 Spanish hospitals from March 1, 2003, to October 31, 2004...
