OBJECTIVES: Cancer is usually associated to an important level of desnutrition together with a postoperative morbidity and mortality increase. The purpose of this study was evaluating its efficacy perioperative nutritional support to reduce surgical complications, stances and mortality significantly in patients undergoing higher digestive tract procedures. METHOD: A prospective, randomized trial was done among a sample of neoplasic patients undergoing higher intestinal tract resective surgery during a period of 4 years...

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of malnutrition in patients in Internal Medicine. To describe the changes of corporal composition depending on body mass index (BMI). To evaluate validity of the different screening tools for the estimation of body composition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective observational cross-sectional study of the prevalence of malnutrition in 300 patients (sample 1); these were chosen 136 patients (sample 2), classifying in four groups: BMI < 20: 30 patients; BMI = 20-25: 46 patients; BMI = 25-30: 30 patients, and BMI > 30: 30 patients...

Elderly are particulary prone to suffer nutritional disbalance, mainly desnutrition. This alterations carry physical and functional consequences. For this reason, the scheduled evaluation of nutritional status must take part in the elderly nursing care. The evaluation must be performed in a individual basis, depending on the health and functional status. A description of screening test for healthy people are included, as is a functional health patterns, paying special attention to the dietary record and some anthropometric testing, to finalize with laboratory tests in the more complex patients...

We aim at contributing with information on the quantitative aspects of the NADH-diaphorase positive myenteric neurons of the jejunum of adult rats subjected to protein desnutrition. Ten rats aging 90 days were divided into two groups: control (n=5, 278 g) and disnurtured (n=5, 280 g). In the following 120 days, the rats from the control group had chow with 22% protein level, and those from the disnurtured group, with 8% protein level. After this period, the control rats weighted 394.4g and the disnurtured 273...

We studied the effects of maternal proteic desnutrition on the neurons of the myenteric plexus of the jejunum of rats from Rattus norvegicus species. It was used litters of female rats which received diet with normal proteic level during gestation and lactation (group NN), normal diet during gestation and hypoproteic diet during lactation (group ND); hypoproteic diet during gestation and normal diet during lactation (group DN); hypoproteic diet during both gestation and lactation (group DD). After weaning all the animals received diet of normal proteic level until the 60th day of age, when they were killed...

We carried out this study with the purpose of contributing on the effects of the proteic desnutrition on the morphological aspects and quantitative analysis of the neurons in the myenteric plexus of the ascending colon of adult Rattus norvegicus. Twenty adult rats were divided into two groups: in one of them, we offered a normal ration with proteic level of 22% (control group) and in the other, a ration with a proteic level of 8% (experiment group) during 120 days. We did the whole-mount preparations for the ascending colon and stained them with the Giemsa technique and the histochemical technique of NADH-diaphorase...

It is a appointed with only somatometrie is not valid criterion in the diagnosis of desnutrition, but is a excellent point in order to identification of risk population. In this order is necessary reference values useful, well elaborated, with adequate samples. It is commented about weight and height as a adequate parameters for measuring growth...

The Authors study 100 children with "kwashiorkor", treated at Municipal Hospital Jesus (Rio de Janeiro). The children came from prolitic families of low economical resources. Their age is between 4 months and 8 years, 53% of them beiney halfbreed, 32% white people and 15% negroes. Diagnosis was based on alimentary deficiency in high caloric value proteins (100%), oedema (100%), muco-cutaneous alterations (78%), capillary changes (65%), apathy (75%), muco-cutaneous pallox (67%), and complementary examinations (total and fraction proteins, sodium, potassium hemoglobin)...

The applicability of the energy/protein index (the ratio between the logarithmic transformation of tricipital skin fold and the brachial muscular circumference) is studied. Results obtained in a group of preschool children exhibiting different clinical-anthropometric forms of malnutrition led us to use this index not only for differentiating well-nourished from malnourished children, but also as a criterion for classifying energy malnutrition (including desnutrition and overweight) as well as protein malnutrition and assessing their magnitude...
