We evaluated the expression profiles of differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) involved in human fetal skin development via high-throughput sequencing to explore the expression difference and the regulatory role of miRNA in different stages of fetal skin development. Analysis of expression profiles of miRNAs involved collecting embryo samples via high-throughput sequencing, then bioinformatics analyses were performed to validate DEmiRNAs. A total of 363 miRNAs were differentially expressed during the early and mid-pregnancy of development, and upregulated DEmiRNAs were mainly concentrated in the let-7 family...

BACKGROUND: Timely diagnosis of acute intestinal necrosis (AIN) is lifesaving, but challenging due to unclear clinical presentation. D-lactate has been proposed as an AIN biomarker. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to test the diagnostic performance in a clinical setting. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional prospective study, including all adult patients with acute referral to a single tertiary gastrointestinal surgical department during 2015-2016 and supplemented by enrollment of high-risk in-hospital patients suspected of having AIN during 2016-2019...

We sought to identify genetic/immunologic contributors of type 2 diabetes in an indigenous American community by genotyping all study participants for both high resolution HLA-DRB1 alleles and SLC16A11 to test their risk and/or protection for T2D. These genes were selected based on independent reports that HLA-DRB1*16:02:01 is protective for T2D and that SLC16A11 associates with T2D in individuals with BMI<35kg/m2, and here test the interaction of the two loci with a more complete dataset and perform a BMI sensitivity test...

BACKGROUND: Low muscle mass in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) is associated with poor prognosis; however, this is based on a single baseline measurement, with little information on changes in muscle mass during hospitalization and their clinical implications. This study investigated the relationship between changes in rectus femoris cross-sectional area (RFCSA) on ultrasound and the prognosis of patients with AHF.Methods and Results: This is a retrospective evaluation of 284 AHF patients (mean [±SD] age 79...

We present a methodological framework for conducting and interpreting subgroup meta-analyses. Methodological steps comprised evaluation of clinical heterogeneity regarding the definition of subpopulations, credibility assessment of subgroup meta-analysis, and translation of relative into absolute treatment effects. We used subgroup data from type 2 diabetes cardiovascular outcomes trials (CVOTs) with glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for patients with established cardiovascular disease and those at high cardiovascular risk without manifest cardiovascular disease...

Our society is aging much faster than it was before, and this phenomenon demands concerted action to optimize geriatric care. Presentations, clinical features, and management decision making are distinct between older adults and general population, and to enhance care quality, there remains unmet needs for undergraduate geriatric education. Among all geriatric syndromes that clinically matter, frailty is particularly instrumental, serving as the overarching phenotype that connects other geriatric conditions and predisposes individuals to adverse outcomes...

In the field of thermal degradation of flavonoids, current studies mainly focused on flavonols. However, the thermal degradation of dihydroflavonols in aqueous solution has received limited attention compared to flavonols. The single C2-C3 bonds of dihydroflavonols, which differs from the C2-C3 double bond in flavonols, may cause different degradation mechanisms. Dihydromyricetin (DMY) is a typical dihydroflavonol with six hydroxyl groups, and possesses various health effects. We explored the thermal degradation of DMY in neutral aqueous solution (pH 7) at 100 ℃...

Coniella granati, the causal agent of pomegranate crown rot, twig blight and fruit decay, is an emerging worldwide pathogen with heavy impact on pomegranate cultivation. With this study, we report the rapid spread of the fungus in Italian pomegranate orchards associated to crown rot symptoms, and provide new results on fungal development, baseline sensitivity to different fungicides and intraspecific variability by analyzing eleven isolates, representative of populations of the pathogen from comparable pomegranate orchards in different regions of Italy...

The brain combines 2-dimensional images received from the two eyes to form a percept of 3-dimensional surroundings. This process of binocular integration in the primary visual cortex (V1) serves as a useful model for studying how neural circuits generate emergent properties from multiple input signals. Here, we perform a thorough characterization of binocular integration using electrophysiological recordings in the V1 of awake adult male and female mice, by systematically varying the orientation and phase disparity of monocular and binocular stimuli...

Distant kinship identification is one of the critical problems in forensic genetics. As a new type of genetic marker defined and discussed in the last decade, the microhaplotype (MH) has drawn much attention in such identification owing to its specific advantages to traditional short tandem repeat (STR) or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. In this study, MH markers were screened step by step from the 1000 Genomes Project database, and a novel multiplex panel containing 188 MHs (in which 181 are reported the first time, while 1 was reported in a previous study and the other 6 have partial overlaps with known markers) was constructed for application in 2nd- and 3rd-degree kinship identification...

BACKGROUND: Hospitalisation rates can be used as an indirect indicator of the burden and severity of adverse health outcomes in childhood cancer survivors. Carbamazepine (CBZ) as an extensively distributed emerging pollutant has menaced ecological security. The degradation performance of CBZ by UV driven bisulfite process was investigated in this work. The kinetics results indicated that CBZ was high-efficiently degraded by UV/bisulfite following a pseudo first-order kinetic model (Kobs  = 0.0925 min-1 ). SO4 •- and •OH were verified as the reactive oxidants by EPR test and the radicals scavenging experiment using MeOH and TBA. SO4 •- played a dominant role for CBZ degradation...

BACKGROUND: An ever-increasing number of patients seek health information via the internet. However, there is an overabundance of differing, often low-quality information available, while a lack of health literacy makes it difficult for patients to understand and assess the quality and trustworthiness of the information at hand. The web portal tala-med was thus conceived as an evidence-based, up-to-date, and trustworthy information resource for lower back pain (LBP), which could be used by primary care physicians (PCPs) and patients during and following consultations for LBP...

The neural bases of attention-a set of neural processes that promote behavioral selection-is a subject of intense investigation. In humans, rewarded cues influence attention, even when those cues are irrelevant to the current task. Because the amygdala plays a role in reward processing, and the activity of amygdala neurons has been linked to spatial attention, we reasoned that the amygdala may be essential for attending to rewarded images. To test this possibility, we used an attentional capture task, which provides a quantitative measure of attentional bias...

Tumor growth is an angiogenesis-dependent process and accompanied by the formation of hypoxic areas. Tumstatin is a tumor-specific angiogenesis inhibitor that suppresses the proliferation and induces the apoptosis of tumorous vascular endothelial cells. VNP20009, an attenuated Salmonella typhimurium strain, preferentially accumulates in the hypoxic areas of solid tumors. In this study, a novel Salmonella-mediated targeted expression system of tumstatin (VNP-Tum5) was developed under the control of the hypoxia-induced J23100 promoter to obtain anti-tumor efficacy in mice...
