(Nax□1 - x)5[MnO2]13 has been synthesized with x = 0.80 (4), corresponding to Na0.31[MnO2]. This well known material is usually cited as Na0.4[MnO2] and is believed to have a romanèchite-like framework. Here, its true structure is determined, ab initio, by single-crystal electron diffraction tomography (EDT) and refined both by EDT data applying dynamical scattering theory and by the Rietveld method based on synchrotron powder diffraction data (χ(2) = 0.690, Rwp = 0.051, Rp = 0.037, RF2 = 0.035). The unit cell is monoclinic C2/m, a = 22...

Faced with the novelty of a 212Pb-labeled monoclonal antibody (mAb) for clinical translation, concerns were expressed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding 212Pb prematurely released from the mAb-chelate conjugate. The objective of this study was to simulate the worst case scenario of such a failure. Groups of Balb/c mice (n = 9-20) were administered 212Pb by intraperitoneal (0.0925-1.85 MBq) or intravenous (0.0925-1.11 MBq) injection and then euthanized at 7 or 90 days to assess acute or chronic effects...

Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is present in plants of the cruciferous family and is abundant in mustard seed. Due to its high bioavailability in urine after ingestion, AITC has been considered a promising antineoplastic agent against bladder cancer. Because TP53 mutations are the most common alterations in bladder cancer cells and are frequently detected in in situ carcinomas, in this study, we investigated whether the AITC effects in bladder cancer cells are dependent on the TP53 status. Two bladder transitional carcinoma cell lines were used: RT4, with wild-type TP53; and T24, mutated TP53 gene...

Head and neck cancers (HNC) are extremely complex disease types and it is likely that chromosomal instability is involved in the genetic mechanisms of its genesis. However, there is little information regarding the background levels of chromosome instability in these patients. In this pilot study, we examined spontaneous chromosome instability in short-term lymphocyte cultures (72 hours) from 72 study subjects - 36 newly diagnosed HNC squamous cell carcinoma patients and 36 healthy ethnic controls. We estimated chromosome instability (CIN) using chromosomal aberration (CA) analysis and nuclear level anomalies using the Cytokinesis Block Micronucleus Cytome Assay (CBMN Cyt Assay)...

Three new gallium selenites, Rb3HGa2(OH)2(SeO3)4, Rb3Ga5(SeO3)8(HSeO3)2·0.5H2O, and RbGa(SeO3)2·H2O, have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions using Rb2CO3, Ga(NO3)3·xH2O, and SeO2 as reagents. Rb3HGa2(OH)2(SeO3)4 consists of unidimensional corner-linked chains of GaO4(OH)2 that are connected by a SeO3 group, whereas Rb3Ga5(SeO3)8(HSeO3)2·0.5H2O and RbGa(SeO3)2·H2O exhibit three-dimensional frameworks consisting of three, mutually perpendicular, eight-membered rings (8-MRs). In all three reported materials, Se(4+) is in an asymmetric coordination environment attributable to the stereoactive lone pair...

Phenols and N-heterocyclic compounds are found to co-exist in actual wastewater, especially in petrochemical and coking wastewater. Lysinibacillus cresolivorans, a bacterium capable of phenol-biodegradation was used to study the substrate interactions of m-cresol and pyridine as single and dual substrates. The cell growth and substrate biodegradation kinetics were also investigated with initial m-cresol concentrations varying from 0 to 1200 mg/L and pyridine concentrations varying from 0 to 150 mg/L. The single substrate kinetics was well described by the Haldane kinetic models...

Various bimetallic reductants of Cu/Fe, Ag/Fe, Pd/Fe and Ni/Fe were prepared by plating Cu, Ag, Pd and Ni on the surface of Fe0. Reductive dechlorination of toxic pollutants of CCl4 in water with Fe0 and amended Fe0 by batch experiments was investigated. Results show that CCl4 in water can be rapidly dechlorinated by above five catalytic reductants, and the presence of Cu, Ag, Pd can enhance the dechlorination rate dramatically. The reaction of CCl4 with various reductants was followed the pseudo first order kinetics, and the dechlorination rate constant of CCl4 in water by Fe0, Cu/Fe, Ag/Fe, Pd/Fe and Ni/Fe was 0...

It is well-known that bone volume decreases with age both in normal subjects and particularly in osteoporotic patients. It is not well demonstrated, however, whether bone loss is associated with changes in the composition of bone tissue and especially with altered concentration of mineral elements. To verify whether calcium density changes with aging, autoptic specimens, of iliac crest trabecular bone from 20 normal subjects between 21 and 66 years, 10 males and 10 females were analyzed by using a new method which allows the measurement of calcium density in a non-destructive way, on entire histologic sections of the bone...

Fishmeal wastewater, a seafood processing waste, was utilized for production of lactic acid and fungal biomass by Rhizopus oryzae AS 3.254 with the addition of sugars. The 30 g/l exogenous glucose in fishmeal wastewater was superior to starch in view of productivities of lactic acid and fungal biomass, and COD reduction. Fishmeal wastewater can be a replacement for peptone which was the most suitable nitrogen source for lactic acid production among the tested organic or inorganic nitrogen sources. Exogenous NaCl (12 g/l) completely inhibited the production of lactic acid and fungal growth...
