Buprenorphine was used as a preanesthetic drug for peridural anaesthesia. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate the sedative/anxiolitic activity of this drug as compared to prometazine and diazepam. This case-report of a 78-year old patient, suffering from extreme pain caused by metastatic formation and pathological bone fractures, shows, that the epidural injection of buprenorphine is a good alternative compared to other means of pain-treatment. During almost four days heart rate, blood pressure and breathing frequency, as well as the general reactions of the patient, were observed. Few side effects and little discomfort make the method advisable for patients in poor general condition.

Postoperative pain relief, consumption of analgesics and the incidence of postoperative complications were investigated in a retrospective cohort-study on 470 patients following abdominal surgery. 221 of these patients received epidural morphine or buprenorphine for postoperative pain relief (Group I).
