Complex tibial plateau fractures are most commonly caused by high-energy trauma and they are often associated with severe soft tissue injuries that can frequently result in severe complications. Ilizarov external circular fixation is an ideal method of treatment for high- energy fractures of the tibial plateau when extensive soft tissue dissection and internal fixation are contraindicated. Our research included 50 consecutive patients and clinical features of the patients were evaluated during the follow up period using the following instruments: Gustillo-Anderson, Sc- hatzker and Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/ OTA) classification methods...

There are few studies on the development of anxiety and depression in orthopaedics and trauma (O&T) inpatients. We designed a cross-sectional study aimed at comparing the prevalence of depression and anxiety in 100 O&T inpatients and 100 clinical inpatients in the same hospital. O&T patients were divided into subgroups: trauma and non-trauma (arthroplasty, tumour, and infection sub grouping). We measured anxiety and depression by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and co-morbidities by the Charlson age-adjusted comorbidity index (CCI)...

This is a retrospective consecutive case series of 138 Gustillo-Anderson type IIIB and IIIC segmental tibial fractures treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in soldiers injured in Iraq between March 2003 and March 2005. Five patients with a head injury and four who were lost to follow-up were excluded. The patients were treated definitively with either a ringed external fixator or a reamed intramedullary nail, evaluated in terms of supplementary bone grafting with either autogenous bone (group 1, 67 patients) or recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 at 1...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of treatment in patients with infected fractures or chronic osteomyelitis in the tibial and ankle regions by radical debridement of skeletal and soft tissues and coverage of the defect, using free flap transfer or muscle flap transposition. MATERIAL: Between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2004, 26 patients were treated by this method; 13 had infected tibial or ankle fractures and 13 showed osteomyelitis of the tibia...

With the introduction of Locking Compression Plates (LCP), Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis (MIPO) has become widely used. The plates act as internal fixators in a bridging manner, thus resulting in secondary bone healing. We retrospectively evaluated the healing pattern and the clinical evolution of diaphyseal and distal tibial shaft fractures over two and a half years in 32 patients (6 females, 26 males). Fractures were classified according to AO classification and included all 42A-C, 43A-B and 43C1-2 types...

From 1989 through 1994, we used a monolateral external fixator (Orthofix) to treat 39 femur fractures in 37 patients. The average age of the patients was 9.5 years (range, 5+11 to 18+8 years); 38 fractures were closed, and one was a grade I (Gustillo-Anderson classification) open fracture. Twenty-two fractures were treated by using the standard Orthofix pin configuration with two or three pins held in the pin clamps both above and below the fracture. We treated the remaining 16 fractures identically, except for the addition of an auxiliary pin, which was secured to the body of the fixator by using wire and methylmethacrylate...
