Development of drugs from natural products has been undergoing a gradual evoluation. Many plant derived compounds have excellent therapeutic potential against various human ailments. They are important sources especially for anticancer agents. A number of promising new agents are in clinical development based on their selective molecular targets in the field of oncology. D-pinitol is a naturally occurring compound derived from soy which has significant pharmacological activitites. Therefore we selected D-pinitol in order to evaluate apoptotic potential in the MCF-7 cell line...

Insufficient readily fermentable energy combined with extensive degradation of proteins in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) may result in poor forage N utilization by ruminants. Using the inherent genetic variability and differences between harvests, our objective was to compare the effect of contrasting concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in alfalfa on rumen fermentation and microbial protein synthesis. Individual genotypes of the alfalfa cultivar AC Caribou grown near Québec City, Québec, Canada, were harvested at the vegetative and early flowering stages, dried at 55 degrees C, ground, and analyzed for soluble carbohydrates (fructose + sucrose + glucose + pinitol) and starch...

During diabetes mellitus, endogenous hepatic glucose production is increased as a result of impaired activities of the key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism, which leads to the condition known as hyperglycemia. D-pinitol, a bioactive constituent isolated from soybeans, has been shown to reduce hyperglycemia in experimental diabetes. We therefore designed this study to investigate the effect of oral administration of D-pinitol (50 mg/kg b. w. for 30 days) on the activities of key enzymes in carbohydrate and glycogen metabolism in the liver tissues of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats...

Ethanol-soluble organic acid, carbohydrate, and amino acid constituents of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) roots and nodules (cytosol and bacteroids) have been identified by gas-liquid chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Among organic acids, citrate was the predominant compound in roots and cytosol, with malonate present in the highest concentration in bacteroids. These two organic acids together with malate and succinate accounted for more than 85% of the organic acid pool in nodules and for 97% in roots...
