Advanced materials comprising multiple metal alloys have made their way into the market. Trimetal-based nanomaterials (TNMs) are an example of advanced materials which have gained significant traction and are now employed in a wide array of products. It is essential to raise the question if the toxicity of advanced nanomaterials like TNMs differs from the joint effects as manifested by exposure to the single component nanoparticles (NPs). To answer this question, a trimetal-based nanomaterial: bismuth cobalt zinc oxide (BiCoZnO) was tested...

The migration mechanism of vanadium (V) in the soil-pore water-maize system has not been revealed. This study conducted pot experiments under artificial control conditions to reveal V's distribution and transport mechanism under different growth stages and V content gradient stress. The V content in the soil pore water gradually increased by an order of magnitude. The V content of pore water in the no-plant group was higher than that in the plant group, indicating that the maize roots absorbed V. The V exists in the form of pentavalent oxygen anions, in which H2 VO4 - occupies the most significant proportion...

Iron (Fe) oxide nanoparticles (NPs) improve crop growth. However, the comparative effect of root and foliar-applied different sources of Fe oxide NPs on plant performance at morphological and physiological levels still needs to be discovered. In this study, we characterized the growth and physiological responses of hydroponic-cultured maize seedlings to four sources of Fe (i.e., α-Fe2 O3 , γ-Fe2 O3 , Fe3 O4 NPs, and bulk Fe3 O4 ) and two application methods (root vs. foliar). Results showed that Fe concentration in root and shoot increased by elevating the level of NPs from 100 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1 ...

Root hypoxia stress and soil nutrient turnover have been related to reduced crop productivity. Aerated drip irrigation (ADI) can effectively enhance crop productivity and yield. However, the response of the soil bacterial community to different irrigation water dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations remains elusive due to the extreme sensitivity of microorganisms to environmental variations. We investigated the effects of aerated irrigation with different concentrations of DO on soil properties and agronomic performance of cucumber, as well as the contribution of the bacterial community...

Climate change-induced extreme weather events (heat, cold, drought, and flooding) will severely affect crop production. Increasing the resilience of crops to fluctuating environmental conditions is critically important. Here, we report that nanomaterials (NMs) with reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating properties can be used as seed priming agents to simultaneously enhance the tolerance of maize seeds and seedlings to diverse and even multiple stresses. Maize seeds primed with 40 mg/L silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibited accelerated seed germination and an increased germination rate, greater seedling vigor, and better seedling growth under drought (10% and 20% PEG), saline (50 and 100 mM NaCl), and cold (15 °C) stress conditions, indicating enhanced resilience to diverse stresses...

This study presents a novel ensemble of surface ozone (O3 ) generated by the LEarning Surface Ozone (LESO) framework. The aim of this study is to investigate the spatial and temporal variation of surface O3 . The LESO ensemble provides unique and accurate hourly (daily/monthly/yearly as needed) O3 surface concentrations on a fine spatial resolution of 0.1◦ × 0.1◦ across China, Europe, and the United States over a period of 10 years (2012-2021). The incidence rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been increasing significantly in recent years, and it is urgent to develop novel drugs that have more effects for its treatment. It has been reported that many molecules extracted from the root bark of Morus alba L. (also known as Cortex Mori) have antitumor activities. In our study, we identified morusinol as a promising anticancer agent by selecting from 30 molecules extracted from Morus alba L. We found that morusinol treatment suppressed cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis of CRC cells in vitro ...

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Y2 O3 thin films was studied using a novel homoleptic yttrium ALD precursor: tris( sec -butylcyclopentadienyl)yttrium [Y(s BuCp)3 ]. Y(s BuCp)3 is a liquid at room temperature. The thermogravimetry curve for Y(s BuCp)3 is clean, with no indication of decomposition or residue formation. Thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis measurements showed that Y(s BuCp)3 is stable for 18 weeks at 190 °C. Y(s BuCp)3 has a homoleptic structure. Thus, a reduction in manufacturing costs is expected compared to those associated with heteroleptic precursors because additional chemical synthesis steps are usually necessary to produce heteroleptic compounds...

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and ozone (O3 ) concentrations are the main global change drivers. Soil ectoenzymes play an important role in maintaining soil ecosystem services. Exploring the responses of soil ectoenzymes to elevated CO2 and O3 concentrations is important for combating global climate change. In this study, we simulated elevated CO2 concentrations (+200 μmol·mol-1 , eCO2 ), elevated O3 concentrations (0.04 μmol·mol-1 , eO3 ), and their combination (eCO2 +eO3 ) in open-top chambers (OTCs), and investigated the responses of rhizospheric soil ectoenzyme activities...

Tropospheric ozone (O3 ) is a secondary pollutant that causes oxidative stress in plants due to the generation of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Phenylpropanoid metabolism is induced as a usual response to stress in plants, and induction of key enzyme activities and accumulation of secondary metabolites occur, upon O3 exposure to provide resistance or tolerance. The phenylpropanoid, isoprenoid, and alkaloid pathways are the major secondary metabolic pathways from which plant defense metabolites emerge...

Americium is a highly radioactive actinide element found in used nuclear fuel. Its adsorption on aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals is important to study for at least two reasons: (i) aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals are ubiquitous in the subsurface environment and (ii) bentonite clays, which are proposed engineered barriers for the geologic disposal of used nuclear fuel, have the same ≡AlOH sites as aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals. Surface complexation modeling is widely used to interpret the adsorption behavior of heavy metals on mineral surfaces...
