Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) encompass a broad spectrum of liver diseases. We propose here to classify them as follows: (1) immunological comorbilities (overlap syndromes); (2) non-immunological comorbilities associated to SLE; and (3) a putative liver damage induced by SLE itself, referred to as "lupus hepatitis". In the first group, liver injury can be ascribed to overlapping hepatopathies triggered by autoimmune mechanisms other than SLE occurring with higher incidence in the context of lupus (e.g...

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A participates in several essentials functions in the human body and their serum concentrations may be decreased in non-transmissible diseases. AIM: To assess the relationship of the nutritional status of Vitamin A through the serum concentrations of retinol and beta carotene, with regression of hepatic steatosis in individuals who undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for treatment of class III obesity. METHODS: Were included 30 individuals, male and female, submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for treatment of class III obesity, who were diagnosed through an abdominal ultrasonography as presenting hepatic steatosis...

Histological analysis of kidney, spleen and liver of Piaractus mesopotamicus, Prochilodus lineatus and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, infected by myxosporean, caugth in Aquidauana river, MS, was studied. After necropsy, samples of liver, previous kidney and spleen were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and processed followed histological routine methods. Sections of 5microm were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Myxobolus porofilus, M. colossomatis and were found in P. lineatus, in P. mesopotamicus respectively and Myxobolus spp...

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are a worldwide problem, causing serious water pollution and public health hazard to humans and livestock. The intact cells as well as the toxins released after cellular lysis can be responsible for toxic effects in both animals and humans and are actually associated with fish kills. Two fish cell lines-PLHC-1 derived from a hepatocellular carcinoma of the topminnow Poeciliopsis lucida and RTG-2 fibroblast-like cells derived from the gonads of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were exposed to several concentrations of extracts from a natural cyanobacterial bloom and a Microcystis aeruginosa-isolated strain...

Hepatic Drug Reactions can be divided in predictable and nonpredictable. The vast majority of drugs produce nonpredictable reactions, unless the patient had a previous reaction with the same drug. There are two main pathological lesions produced by drugs: one is a cholestasis with mild portal inflammation. The other is a viral hepatitic like lesion with variable degree of necrosis. Less frequent are chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, esteatosis, peliosis, intrahepatic thrombosis. Cholestasis is a benign and reversible lesion...

The plant Solanum nudum has been used by the community of Tumaco (Nariño, Colombia) as a cure for malaria. Our group has confirmed the in vitro antimalarial activity against the strain of Plasmodium falciparum FCB-2. During our in vivo studies on the therapeutic effect of Solanum nudum extracts on mice infected with Plasmodium berghei, we observed yellowish tint in the palms of mice treated with the aqueous extract via i.p. at a concentration of 2.4% w/vol. This finding suggested the need to carry out a histology study of the liver...

We have performed 284 OLT and from 1990 we accept donors older than 50 years. We analyzed 100 consecutive OLT from 1990 in relation to donor age and we divided them in three groups: A) 10 liver transplants with donors < 16 years old; B) 76 liver transplants with donors between 16 and 49 years old, and C) 14 liver transplants with donors > 49 years old. The follow-up was more than 6 months. The liver preservation was carried out with Belzer solution and the immunosuppression was performed with cyclosporine A, corticoids and azathioprine...

Total parenteral nutrition is associated with hepatic metabolic and morphologic changes. Histological alterations induced by administration of glucose plus amino acids (group A) or glucose plus amino acids and lipids (group B) have been investigated in the rat. Parenteral nutrition provided 187 kcal/kg/day in both groups of animals. Rats in group B received 30% of nonprotein calories as lipids (Intralipid). In group A the most frequent histopathological findings were inflammation, portal edema and microesteatosis...

23 patients whose weight varied from ninety-eight to 220 kilos were subjected to four different types of jejuno-ileal by pass operations: terminal-lateral (14 X 4) in three, terminal-terminal (14 X 4) in fifteen, (12 X 8) in two, and (10 X 8) in three. The defunctionalized intestine was anastomized to the transverse colon. Liver, jejenum and ileal biopsies as well as profilactic apendectomy were performed in all the cases along with colecistectomy when possible. All our patients were carefully studied in the pre and postoperative periods...
