With the escalating overdose epidemic, many surveillance efforts have appeared. In 2018, King County Medical Examiner's Office (KCMEO) initiated a fatal overdose surveillance project aimed at expediting death certification and disseminating timely information. In this project, KCMEO investigators collected items of evidence of drug use from overdose death scenes, which were tested by five in-house methods, four using handheld devices: TruNarc Raman spectrometer, with and without the manufacture's H-Kit, Rigaku ResQ Raman spectrometer, and MX908 mass spectrometer...

The detection of intact explosives in the field provides a unique challenge for investigators, considering the sensitive and dangerous nature of these samples. Handheld Raman instruments have grown in popularity for the analysis of unknown samples in the field, combining speed of data collection and reliability with a size that allows for the instruments to be field portable. Handheld Raman instruments are used commonly in the field, and yet there is very little research on the detection capabilities of these instruments, specifically for explosive compounds...

Five different electron density datasets obtained from conventional and synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments are compared. The general aim of the study is to investigate the quality of data for electron density analysis from current state-of-the-art conventional sources, and to see how the data perform in comparison with high-quality synchrotron data. A molecular crystal of melamine was selected as the test compound due to its ability to form excellent single crystals, the light atom content, and an advantageous suitability factor of 3...

Phosphorescence is considered one of the non-invasive glioblastoma testing methods based on studying molecular energy and the metabolism of L-tryptophan (Trp) through KP, which provides essential information on regulating immunity and neuronal function. This study aimed to conduct a feasibility study using phosphorescence in clinical oncology as an early prognostic test in detecting Glioblastoma. This study was conducted on 1039 patients who were operated on with follow-up between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2022, and retrospectively evaluated in participating institutions in Ukraine (the Department of Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Oncosurgery, and Palliative Care at the Kharkiv National Medical University)...

The system is equipped with an Excillum MetalJet D2 + 70 kV high-brightness x-ray source with a liquid GaIn anode. The x-ray diffraction imaging (topography) technique with the use of a high-resolution x-ray Rigaku camera was applied to analyze crystal structure defects. Two-dimensional images were experimentally recorded using 400 and 111 reflections with a resolution of 1...

The analysis and interpretation of the pair distribution function (PDF), as derived from total scattering measurements, is still seen by many as a technique confined to central synchrotron and neutron facilities. This situation has begun to change with a rising visibility of total scattering experiments reported in mainstream scientific journals and the modification of an increasing number of laboratory diffractometers. However, the rigor required during data reduction and the complexities of data interpretation mean the technique is still very far from being routine...

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) was established to compete reasonably with the reverting, bolting, adhesive bonding as well as resistance spot welding (RSW) which have been used in the past for lap joining in automobile, aerospace, marine, railways, defence and shipbuilding industries. The use of these ancient and conventional joining techniques had led to increasing material cost, installation labour, and additional weight in the aircraft, shipbuilding, and other areas of applications. All these are disadvantages that can be overcome using FSSW...

The performance of the new 52 kHz frame rate Rigaku XSPA-500k detector was characterized on beamline 8-ID-I at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) applications. Due to the large data flow produced by this detector (0.2 PB of data per 24 h of continuous operation), a workflow system was deployed that uses the Advanced Photon Source data-management (DM) system and high-performance software to rapidly reduce area-detector data to multi-tau and two-time correlation functions in near real time, providing human-in-the-loop feedback to experimenters...

Exploiting small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) on the same sample volume at the same time provides complementary nanoscale structural information in two different contrast situations. Unlike an independent experimental approach, the truly combined SAXS/SANS experimental approach ensures the exactness of the probed samples, particularly for in situ studies. Here, an advanced portable SAXS system that is dimensionally suitable for installation in the D22 zone of ILL is introduced. The SAXS apparatus is based on a Rigaku switchable copper/molybdenum microfocus rotating-anode X-ray generator and a DECTRIS detector with a changeable sample-to-detector distance of up to 1...

We describe methods to express the nucleoprotein (NP) of Lassa fever virus (LASV) in E. coli, to purify and crystallize it using the sitting-drop vapor diffusion method. The crystals were screened using Rigaku micro-007 X-ray generator and a dataset was collected at a resolution of 2.36 Å. The crystals belong to space group P3, with the unit cell parameters a = b = 176.35 Å, c = 56.40 Å, α = β = 90°, and γ = 120°. Using the X-ray diffraction method, we constructed a three-dimensional structure of the LASV NP that should aid in the development of novel therapeutic strategies against this virus, for which vaccine and effective treatment modalities are currently unavailable...

Such multilayer structures deposited on substrates can be used as X-ray monochromators or reflecting synchrotron mirrors. The measured reflectivities agree with the simulated ones.
