INTRODUCTION: Indigenous populations renowned for apneic diving have comparatively large spleen volumes. It has been proposed that a larger spleen translates to heightened apnea-induced splenic contraction and elevations in circulating hemoglobin mass (Hbmass ), which, in theory, improves O2 carrying and/or CO2 /pH buffering capacities. However, the relation between resting spleen volume and apnea- induced increases in Hbmass is unknown. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that resting spleen volume is positively related to apnea-induced increases in total Hbmass ...

Parts made through additive manufacturing (AM) often exhibit mechanical anisotropy due to the time-based deposition of material and processing parameters. In polymer material extrusion (MEX), printed parts have weak points at layer interfaces, perpendicular to the direction of deposition. Poly(lactic acid) with chopped carbon fiber was printed on a large-format pellet printer at various extrusion rates with the same tool pathing to measure the fiber alignment with deposition via two methods and relate it to the ultimate tensile strength (UTS)...

Housing affordability is a growing challenge for households in the United States and other developed countries. Prolonged exposure to housing cost burden can have damaging effects on households, and, in particular, children. These burdens can exacerbate parental stress, reduce investments in children and expose households to greater neighborhood disadvantage. In this study, we use national survey data to assess whether cumulative housing cost burden exposure is associated with disadvantages to children's well-being and health...

BACKGROUND: Despite systematic thromboprophylaxis, 30% of the COVID-19 patients in intensive care units develop thrombosis. This occurrence is associated with a hypofibrinolytic state measured by thromboelastometry when adding tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to citrated whole blood for a further run for EXTEM (ROTEM). OBJECTIVES: Because hydroxyethyl starches (HESs) affect fibrin polymerization, we have assessed its potential effect on in vitro tPA-induced fibrinolysis...

Historically, beet curly top virus (BCTV; Geminiviridae , Curtovirus ) is known for destroying the sugar beet industry in Utah and has been a persistent problem in the state since then (Ball, 1917). Starting in June of 2022, we began identifying plants in San Juan County, Utah with chlorosis and leaf curling. Of note, Solanum jamesii , the Four Corners potato, Artemisia tridentata , big sagebrush, and Helianthus annuus , common sunflower, were found with general chlorosis, severe leaf curling and in the case of the sage brush, completely lacking in smell whereas nearby sage plants without the yellowing were intensely fragrant...

Affiliation is both an antecedent and a consequence of emotional mimicry (i.e. imitating a counterpart's emotional expression). Thus, interacting with a disliked partner can decrease emotional mimicry, which in turn can further decrease liking. This perpetuating circle has not been investigated in the context of mental health stigma yet. The present study tested the influence of the label "schizophrenia" on liking, interpersonal closeness, and emotional mimicry. In an online experiment ( n  = 201), participants recruited from the general population saw several videos of actors displaying emotional expressions...

Intracortical microelectrodes (IMEs) can be used to restore motor and sensory function as a part of brain-computer interfaces in individuals with neuromusculoskeletal disorders. However, the neuroinflammatory response to IMEs can result in their premature failure, leading to reduced therapeutic efficacy. Mechanically-adaptive, resveratrol-eluting (MARE) neural probes target two mechanisms believed to contribute to the neuroinflammatory response by reducing the mechanical mismatch between the brain tissue and device, as well as locally delivering an antioxidant therapeutic...

Colisepticaemia caused by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a challenging disease due to its high economic importance in poultry, dubious pathogenesis and potential link with zoonosis and food safety. The existing in vitro studies can't define hallmark traits of APEC isolates, suggesting a paradigm shift towards host response to understand pathogenesis. This study investigated the comprehensive pathological and microbial progression of colisepticaemia, and transmission of E. coli into eggs using novel tools...

INTRODUCTION: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective analgesics commonly used in fracture management. Although previously associated with delayed fracture healing, multiple studies have demonstrated their safety, with minimal risks of fracture healing. Given the current opioid crisis in the United States, alternate pain control modalities are essential to reduce opioid consumption. This study aims to determine whether the combination of oral acetaminophen and intravenous ketorolac is a viable alternative to opioid-based pain management in closed tibial shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nailing...

Ingestion or aspiration of dental implant screwdrivers or implant components is potentially life-threatening. There are no reports on the frequency at which dentists drop these devices within the mouth or which components are most problematic. There are few reports on what protective measures clinicians take, where risks exist, and how this problem is managed. A 9-part questionnaire was provided to dentists. Data collected included clinicians' roles, implant surgeons, restorative clinicians, or both-the frequency of dropping implant screwdrivers or components, items considered most problematic...

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Despite technological advances, ruptured wide-necked aneurysms continue to pose a challenge for endovascular management. Comaneci (Rapid Medical) is a relatively new temporary aneurysm neck bridging device to assist in coiling of wide-necked aneurysms without the need for dual antiplatelet therapy or parent vessel flow interruption. Y configuration is often necessary to prevent coil migration in cases of wide-necked aneurysms. Thus far, there have been no reports of using Comaneci device in Y configuration to aid anterior circulation aneurysm treatment...
