BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer has a high incidence and fatality rate, and surgery is the preferred course of treatment. Nonetheless, patient survival rates are still low, and the incidence of major postoperative complications cannot be disregarded. The systemic inflammatory response, nutritional level, and coagulation status are key factors affecting the postoperative recovery and prognosis of gastric cancer patients. The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and the albumin fibrinogen ratio (AFR) are two valuable comprehensive indicators of the severity and prognosis of systemic inflammation in various medical conditions...

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism significantly contributes to patient deterioration and mortality. Management of its etiology and anticoagulation treatment is intricate, necessitating a comprehensive consideration of various factors, including the bleeding risk, dosage, specific anticoagulant medications, and duration of therapy. Herein, a case of lower extremity thrombosis with multiple primary malignant tumors and high risk of bleeding was reviewed to summarize the shortcomings of treatment and prudent anticoagulation experience...

OBJECTIVE: To compare the fluid resuscitation effect of sodium acetate Ringer's solution and sodium bicarbonate Ringer's solution on patients with traumatic haemorrhagic shock. METHOD: We conducted a prospective cohort study in our emergency department on a total of 71 patients with traumatic haemorrhagic shock admitted between 1 December 2020 and 28 February 2022. Based on the time of admission, patients were randomly divided into a sodium bicarbonate Ringer's solution group and sodium acetate Ringer's solution group, and a limited rehydration resuscitation strategy was adopted in both groups...

Objective To investigate whether immunosuppressive therapy is beneficial in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients with eGFR < 45ml/min/1.73m2. Methods This retrospective study involved 110 IgAN patients for whom clinical data was available; of these, 90 had complete follow-up data. Patients were grouped based on whether they received immunotherapy during follow-up, their renal function, proteinuria levels, and the percentage of crescentic glomeruli observed at the time of renal biopsy. Results The mean eGFR for the participants was 32...

Blood flow disorders are often the result of the non-physiological narrowing of blood arteries caused by atherosclerosis and thrombus. The blood then proceeds through rising-peak-decreasing phases as it passes through the narrow area. Although abnormally high shear is known to activate platelets, the shear process that platelets undergo in small arteries is complex. Thus, understanding how each shear phase affects platelet activation can be used to improve antiplatelet therapy and decrease the risk of side effects like bleeding...

We previously reported that tenascin-X (Tnxb) aggravates hepatic fibrosis in mice fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet with high levels of phosphorus and calcium (HFCD). In this study, we investigated Tnxb expression in livers with fibrosis caused by administration of a methionine-chorine-deficient (MCD) diet in mice. Whole transcriptome analysis showed that Tnxb was one of the genes with increased expression in livers of MCD diet-fed mice compared with that in livers of normal diet (ND)-fed mice. In microarray and subsequent microRNA (miRNA) network analyses, miR-378a-5p and miR-486-5p were identified in livers of MCD diet-fed mice as downregulated miRNAs, which have their predicted target sites in the 3' untranslated region of Tnxb mRNA and might suppress the translation of Tnxb mRNA...

OBJECTIVES: Although numerous factors had been found to be associated with stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP), the underlying mechanisms of SAP remain unclear. Fibrinogen-prealbumin ratio (FPR) is a novel indicator that could balance the effects of inflammation and nutrition, which might reflect biological status of patients more comprehensively than other biomarkers. To date, FPR has not been explored in acute ischemic stroke patients. This study aims to explore the relationship between FPR and SAP...

Ultrasound-accelerated catheter-directed thrombolysis (UA-CDT) to improve patency after deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has not conclusively been shown to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) but might benefit patients who are unlikely to obtain patency with standard treatment. We hypothesized that these patients could be selected based on their fibrin clot properties. To study this, patients with acute iliofemoral DVT from the CAVA trial had blood samples taken at inclusion. Fibrin clot properties in plasma were determined by turbidimetric clotting (lag time and maximal turbidity) and lysis assays (time to 50% lysis and lysis rate), permeation assay (Ks), and confocal microscopy (fiber density), as well as levels of fibrin clot modifiers fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP)...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a complex condition associated with prothrombotic fibrin networks that are resistant to fibrinolysis. Altered fibrin clot properties enhance cardiovascular risk and associate with a poorer prognosis following acute ischemic events. Bariatric surgery is commonly employed to improve cardiometabolic outcomes in individuals with obesity. However, the effects of this surgical intervention on fibrin clot properties have not been comprehensively studied. This study addresses a critical challenge in bioprinting for regenerative medicine, specifically the issue of hypoxia compromising cell viability in engineered tissues. To overcome this hurdle, a novel approach utilizing a microfluidic bioprinter is employed to create a two-layer structure resembling the human ovary. This structure incorporates a liposomal oxygen-releasing system to enhance cell viability. The bioprinting technique enables the simultaneous extrusion of two distinct bioinks, namely bioink A (comprising alginate 1% and 5mg/ml PEGylated fibrinogen in a 20:1 molar ratio) and bioink B (containing alginate 0...

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is characterized by inflammation, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis, contributing to increased mortality risk. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) takes a crucial part in mitigating atherosclerosis and inflammation through its diverse functionalities. Conversely, fibrinogen is implicated in the development of atherosclerotic plaques. However, the mortality risk predictive capacity of fibrinogen to HDL-cholesterol ratio (FHR) in AMI patients remains unexplored...

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the deadliest cancers. Late presentation of disease at the time of diagnosis is one of the major reasons for dismal prognostic outcomes for PDAC patients. Currently, there is a lack of clinical biomarkers, which can be used to diagnose PDAC patients at an early resectable stage. This study performed proteomic mass spectrometry to identify novel blood-based biomarkers for early diagnosis of PDAC. Serum specimens from 88 PDAC patients and 88 healthy controls (60 discovery cohort and 28 validation cohort) were analyzed using data independent acquisition high resolution mass spectrometry to identify candidate biomarker proteins...
