Colonic atresia is a rare cause of congenital low-type intestinal obstruction in the neonatal age group and may present as a surgical emergency if not diagnosed early. Clinically, it can pose a diagnostic dilemma for Hirschsprung disease, which involves a different treatment strategy. Therefore, an early and accurate diagnosis is paramount from a management and prognosis perspective. The contrast enema plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of the disease. The "Windsock or Cobra head sign" on the contrast enema, typically seen only in type 1 colonic atresia, can help radiologists and surgeons identify this disease...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Currently, some countries still acknowledge double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) as a backup confirmatory examination when colonoscopy is not feasible or incomplete in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs. This study aims to compare the performance of colonoscopy and DCBE in terms of the risk of incident CRC after negative results in the fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-based Taiwan Colorectal Cancer Screening Program. METHODS: Subjects who had positive FITs and received confirmatory exams, either colonoscopy or DCBE, without the findings of neoplastic lesions from 2004 to 2013 in the screening program comprised the study cohort...

Rectal perforations due to topical treatments (enemas or foams) are unusual complications and they have been mostly reported in the use of barium enemas or in elderly patients with constipation. Very little has been reported about perforations secondary to topical treatment in patients with ulcerative colitis. We present the case of a patient with ulcerative colitis who suffered a rectal perforation complicated with a superinfected collection after the application of topical mesalazine foam.

Colo-vesical fistula (CVF) is usually encountered in severe inflammatory and malignant conditions. Radiological imaging is crucial to the diagnosis of a colo-vesical fistula and helps gastroenterologists and surgeons select the best treatment option. This disorder is typically identified during follow-up of treatments for diverticulitis or chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The patients present with symptoms of pneumaturia and fecaluria. The most accurate imaging modality for diagnosing CVF is CT with rectal contrast...

Fecal impaction is a common digestive disorder and is considered an acute complication of chronic and untreated constipation. Generally, the factors responsible for fecal impaction are similar to those associated with constipation. Early identification and treatment minimize complications and patient discomfort. Common treatment options to address fecal impaction of the rectum include manual disimpaction or fragmentation, the use of distal and/or proximal softening or washout procedures such as enemas and suppositories, and oral or nasogastric tube placement for the administration of polyethylene glycol solutions containing electrolytes...

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) is a parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, in which up to 10-20% of those affected may suffer digestive disorders. Multiple studies have been carried out on CD in non-endemic countries, mainly related to cardiological involvement. However, digestive disorders have not been analyzed in such depth. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of digestive disorders in imported CD at the time of first care. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional descriptive analysis of imported CD was performed...

A woman in her 80s was diagnosed with an abdominal mass during physical examination. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)revealed a tumor with contrast enhancement outside the ileocecal region of the intestine, and the ileocolic artery penetrated the tumor. No tumor was detected by colonoscopy. An endoscope could not be passed through due to an ileocecal valve stenosis. A biopsy of the ileocecal valve revealed only lymphocyte hyperplasia without adenocarcinoma components. Barium enema examination demonstrated no influx of the contrast medium from the cecum into the oral side of the intestine...

Gastrocolic (GC) fistula, a rare gastrointestinal pathological condition, is defined as an abnormal connection between the stomach and the colon. Mostly, it involves the greater curvature of the stomach and the transverse part of the colon. Its precise incidence rate is unknown and largely differs between western and eastern nations. Etiological causes differ as well between the two worlds. Although several precipitating diseases are reported, nowadays, the most common causes are malignant diseases of the stomach (eastern countries) and colon (western world)...

We present a case of an infant born to a mother with COVID-19, who at 24 hours of life was treated with a glycerin suppository for failure to pass meconium and went on to develop bilious emesis and abdominal distention as feeding continued over the next several hours. After a barium enema identified the distal obstruction, the pediatric surgical team used rectal irrigation to remove a large meconium plug, which mimicked the appearance of the descending colon on plain film, in a case of small left colon syndrome...

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis (CS) depends on the placental transmission of Treponema pallidum (TP) spirochetes from an infected mother to fetus during pregnancy. It shows a wide clinical variability with cutaneous and visceral manifestations, including stillbirths, neonatal death, and asymptomatic cases. Preterm infants with CS may have more severe features of disease than the term ones, due to the combined pathogenic effect of both CS and prematurity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a female preterm (32+6  weeks of gestation) newborn showing most of the typical CS manifestations, in addition to gastrointestinal disorders including feeding difficulties, colon stenosis and malabsorption leading to postnatal growth restriction...

In recent years, due to the development of standardized diagnostic protocols associated with an improvement in the associated technology, the diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis using imaging is becoming a reality. In particular, transvaginal ultrasound and magnetic resonance are today the two imaging techniques that can accurately identify the majority of the phenotypes of endometriosis. This review focuses not only on these most common imaging modalities but also on some additional radiological techniques that were proposed for rectosigmoid colon endometriosis, such as double-contrast barium enema, rectal endoscopic ultrasonography, multidetector computed tomography enema, computed tomography colonography and positron emission tomography-computed tomography with 16α-[18F]fluoro-17β-estradiol...
