Facial injuries caused by camels can be associated with adverse long-term effects on patients' quality of life. We aimed to investigate camel-related facial injuries in Al-Ain City, UAE, focusing on their incidence, types, mechanisms, anatomical distribution, and outcomes, to enhance preventive measures. We retrospectively collected data from all patients who were admitted to our hospital with camel-related facial injuries from January 2014 through January 2021. Thirty-six patients were included; all were males, with a mean (range) age of 31 (14-66) years, 29 (80...

BACKGROUND: Healthcare spending in the United States remains a major concern, requiring reforms to control spending and curtail costs. Medical supply is one of the largest expenses for hospitals and strategies should be utilized to reduce nonbeneficial service delivery, which increases cost without concomitant increase in value. Introduction of field sterility is one of the potential strategies that has been applied in several surgical disciplines to improve cost-efficiency by reducing overuse of resources and decreasing enormous medical waste...

BACKGROUND: Facial trauma comprises a significant portion of injuries that occur each year in the United States, with injuries ranging from lacerations to complex facial fractures. This study aims to provide a broad epidemiologic overview of facial trauma in the United States to direct preventative safety measures. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database to identify the weighted national incidence of facial injuries from 2017 to 2021...

Airway injury, Ocular injury and neurovascular tissue damage, burns is all a spectrum of pediatric soft tissue injury complex. Soft tissue injuries to the head and neck area in children are challenging to manage, because these injuries significantly affect the child's overall health and development. Management of such injuries requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgical and nonsurgical interventions and close collaboration among health care professionals, parents, and caregivers. This article reviews the various causes of injuries, specific considerations for each region of the head and neck, and approaches to the surgical management of soft tissue injuries in pediatric patients, including surgical and adjuvant therapies...

Headguard use is appropriate during some combat sports activities where the risks of injury to the face and ears are elevated. Headguards are highly effective in reducing the incidence of facial lacerations in studies of amateur boxers and are just as effective in other striking sports. They should be used in scenarios - especially sparring prior to competitions - where avoidance of laceration and subsequent exposure to potential blood-borne pathogens is important. Headguards are appropriate where avoidance of auricular injury is deemed important; limited data show a marked reduction in incidence of auricular injury in wrestlers wearing headguards...

BACKGROUND: Knowing the severity of a pathology in a population helps to both establish a rapid diagnosis and to prepare medical staff to provide adequate and complete treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the patterns of maxillofacial fractures and their associated soft tissue injuries in order to identify the specific types of maxillofacial fractures with the highest incidence of associated soft tissue injuries. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective evaluation of maxillofacial trauma was performed on 1007 patients...

INTRODUCTION: Dog bite injuries occur in approximately 102 of every 100,000 population. Pediatric facial injuries due to dog bites are more common than in the adult largely due to height difference and ease of access for the dog to the head and neck region. Although majority are soft tissue injuries, pediatric facial fractures from dog bites are estimated at approximately 5%, with the true incidence unknown. We hypothesize that depth and facial subsite of laceration can indicate likelihood of facial fracture presence in pediatric patients with dog bite injuries...

This study aimed report two cases of blunt-cut lip injury which occurred in postoperatory dehiscence. Patients were referred to the emergence attendance and the clinical examination revealed extensive laceration on the upper and lower lips of both patients, highly contaminated with asphalt residue. The affected regions were properly cleaned with saline and antiseptic solution, and, under local anesthesia, suturing was performed in layers in the muscle and oral mucosa region with 4-0 resorbable thread and in the skin region with 6-0 non-absorbable thread...

Pembrolizumab is a monoclonal antibody frequently used as immunotherapy for lung cell carcinoma that has been reported to cause hypothyroidism and myasthenia gravis among other, unwanted side effects. Here, we present an interesting case of a 77-year-old male previously diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma managed with pembrolizumab. Initially, he was admitted after a mechanical fall sustaining a facial laceration and subacute fracture in the nasal bone. However, during the workup, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was found to be elevated, which was attributed to the history of pembrolizumab usage...

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a change in our practice in the management of pediatric soft-tissue injuries. Patients were managed conservatively whenever possible. Our aim in this study was to see whether this more conservative approach adversely affected clinical, and patient-reported outcomes, including scarring. A prospective record of children presenting to the plastic surgery "Early Bird" clinic for pediatric trauma between 01.04.2020 and 30.06.2020 was kept. Electronic patient records were reviewed...

The authors report a case of an intraorbital wooden foreign body that was misinterpreted as a radiolucent area of retained air on a computed tomography (CT) scan. A 20-year-old soldier presented to an outpatient clinic following an impingement with a bough while cutting down a tree. He had a 1-cm-deep laceration on the inner canthal area of his right eye. A military surgeon explored the wound and suspected a foreign body, but could not find or extract anything. Thereafter, the wound was sutured and the patient was transferred...

Scarring is a common post-injury outcome that can precipitate functional impairment. We present the case of a 75-year-old female who presented with diminished upper eyelid excursion in her right (only seeing) eye due to scarring associated with a facial laceration. She had a history of right eye corneal transplantation and necessitated urgent excision of the scar to release upper eyelid motion. The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic forces athletes to perform their workout at home with alternative training methods. Potentially resulting injuries include bruises, head injuries, lacerations, facial fractures and eye injuries. The following article presents two case reports including accident mechanism, injuries, diagnostic evaluation and treatment. The first patient presented with an open depressed skull fracture caused by a recoiling exercise resistance band, while the second patient sustained a complex ocular trauma caused by a tearing exercise resistance band when performing supported chin-ups...

Dental and oral injuries are a common occurrence in sport. Initial evaluation should always begin with an assessment of the patient's airway, breathing, circulation, as well as identification of associated injuries. Tooth avulsions are the only true dental emergency. Oral lacerations frequently do not require repair; however, special attention should be paid to lip lacerations involving the vermillion border. Most tooth and oral lacerations can be treated on the field with urgent referral to a dentist.

During the turn of the year, injuries caused by fireworks occur in Germany every year. According to the professional associations, the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, for example, treats an average of 50 injuries caused by fireworks on New Year's Eve. Patients come with burns, soft tissue injuries, or fractures; eyes and hands are particularly frequently affected. Again and again, there are also very serious or even fatal injuries. The background is usually the improper or illegal use of larger fireworks. Smaller fireworks such as sparklers, bangers, or smaller rockets are available in Germany in most supermarkets, and their use is permitted from the age of 12 or 18...
