Two amantadine (ATD)-gardenamide A (GA) ligands have been designed and synthesized. The bonding of ATD with GA through a methylene carbonyl brigde (L1) enhances the neuroprotective effect against corticosterone (CORT)-induced impairments in PC12 cells; while the bonding through a succinyl brigde (L2) does not. L1 reduces the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell apoptosis generated by CORT. It restores CORT-changed cell morphology to a state that is closed to normal PC12 cells. One mechanism of L1 to attenuate CORT-induced cell apoptosis is through the adjustment of both caspase-3 and Bcl-2 proteins...

μ-Nitrido diiron phthalocyanine [PcFe(+3.5)NFe(+3.5)Pc](0) is an efficient catalyst, able to catalyze the oxidation of methane under near-ambient conditions. In this work, we compared the properties of structurally similar μ-carbido (1), μ-nitrido (2), and μ-oxo (3) dimers of iron phthalocyanine. The goal was to discern the structural and electronic differences between these complexes and to propose a rationale for the exceptional activity of 2. Extended X-ray fine-structure spectroscopy, high-resolution X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering were applied to study the geometry and electronic structure of iron species in the series 1-3...

The encoding of letter position is a key aspect in all recently proposed models of visual-word recognition. We analyzed the impact of lexical frequency on letter position assignment by examining the temporal dynamics of lexical activation induced by pseudowords extracted from words of different frequencies. For each word (e.g., BRIDGE), we created two pseudowords: A transposed-letter (TL: BRIGDE) and a replaced-letter pseudoword (RL: BRITGE). ERPs were recorded while participants read words and pseudowords in two tasks: Semantic categorization (experiment 1) and lexical decision (experiment 2)...

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, {[Sm(2)(C(8)H(2)NO(6))(2)(H(2)O)(5)]·H(2)O}(n), contains two independent Sm(III) ions, two pyridine-2,4,6-tricarboxyl-ate (ptc) ligands, five aqua ligands and one lattice water mol-ecule. One Sm(III) ion is nine-coordinated by one N and five O atoms from the three ptc ligands and three aqua ligands in a distorted monocapped square antiprismatic geometry, and the other is eight-coordinated by one N and five O atoms from three ptc ligands and two aqua ligands in a 4,4'-bicapped trigonal anti-prismatic geometry...

The traditional distinction between ecological and evolutionary times is eroding, calling for tighter links between ecology and evolution. An example of such a brigde between the two disciplines is the so-called 'animal model', a methodology initially developed by animal breeders, which has become very popular among ecologists studying contemporary microevolution. Using a Bayesian multi-trait 'animal model', we investigated the quantitative genetics of body size, a fitness-related trait, in Subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) breeding on Amsterdam Island, Southern Ocean...

Novel hydrogen-bonded supramolecular thioarsenates [Fe(phen)(3)][As(3)S(6)] x dien x 7 H(2)O (1) and [Mn(2)(phen)(4)(As(2)S(5))] x phen x 2 H(2)O (2) (dien = diethylenetriamine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. The structure of 1 consists of [As(3)S(6)](3-)-H(2)O anionic layers and [Fe(phen)(3)](3+)-dien cationic layers assembled via O-H...S and O-H...N hydrogen-bonding interactions. The layers stack alternately and are parallel to each other to give a 3D network structure with channels accommodating unique branched water chains, which are anchored on the anionic and cationic layers via hydrogen bonds...

Activation of the NF-kappaB pathway by the TNF-receptor Edar (Ectodysplasin receptor) and its downstream adaptator Edaradd (Edar-associated death domain) is essential for the development of hair follicles, teeth, exocrine glands and other ectodermal derivatives. Dysfunction of Edar signalling causes hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (ED), a disorder characterized by sparse hair, lack of sweat glands and malformation of teeth. The Edar signalling pathway stimulates NF-kappaB transcription factors via an activation of the IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex...

[reaction: see text] Ring-closing alkyne metathesis toward the synthesis of the alkyne-brigded A-, B-, C-, and (D)E-ring mimics of the peptide antibiotic nisin Z is described. We have successfully synthesized alkyne-bridged cyclic peptides containing 4-7 amino acid residues in yields ranging from 18 to 82%.

The postoperative complication rate of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is about 5-6%. The most frequent complications are residual gallstones in the common bile duct, biliary leckage, biliary fistula and duct stenosis. In the period between 01.11.94 and 01.04.96 we performed 1620 endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatographies including 410 papillotomies at the second Department of Medicine in the Clinic of Suhl. Thereby in 2.1% (34 cases) of patients a complication after laparosopic cholecystectomy was seen and endoscopically controlled...
