PURPOSE: Unexpected-positive-intraoperative-cultures (UPIC) are common in presumed aseptic revision-total-knee-arthroplasties (rTKA). However, the clinical significance is not entirely clear. In contrast, in some presumably septic rTKA, identification of an underlying pathogen was not possible, so-called unexpected-negative-intraoperative-cultures (UNIC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential use of synovial alpha-defensin (AD) levels in these patients. METHODS: Synovial AD levels from 143 rTKAs were evaluated retrospectively from our prospectively maintained institutional periprostetic joint infection (PJI) biobank and database...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The study aims to quantify the costs of a hospital stay of patients with total knee periprosthetic joint infection throughout the period of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The group included patients who have been treated at our department for infection as a complication of total knee replacement since 1 January 2011, who have been provided with treatment (including complications) exclusively at the departments of Nemocnice České Budějovice, a.s. and whose treatment can be considered completed in 2018...

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) due to Salmonella is rare. It frequently occurs patients receiving immunosuppressive medicine. We describe two periprosthetic Salmonella infection of two immunocompromised patients. Both of patients were receiving azathioprine and prednisolone therapy. First patient presented six years after total hip arthroplasty with a huge abscess on her right thigh that was reached to femoral component through the lytic area of lateral femur. Second patient presented with drainage from his hip and he had undergone two-step revision surgery for PJI 3 months ago...
