Introduction: The short version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies (CES-D) Depression Scale is a viable tool for screening depressive symptomatology in the general population, but its factorial invariance for indigenous populations in Latin America has not been reported. Objective: To describe the differences in the prevalence of depressive symptomatology and the factorial invariance of the short version of the CES-D scale for the Mexican indigenous population. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a representative sample of 37,165 Mexican adults aged 20 to 59 years...

Para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) has caused numerous fatal poisonings worldwide and appears to be more toxic than other ring-substituted amphetamines. Systemic metabolism is suggested to be important for PMMA neurotoxicity, possibly through activation of minor catechol metabolites to neurotoxic conjugates. The aim of this study was to examine the metabolism of PMMA in humans; for this purpose, we used human liver microsomes (HLMs) and blood samples from three cases of fatal PMMA intoxication. We also examined the impact of CYP2D6 genetics on PMMA metabolism by using genotyped HLMs isolated from CYP2D6 poor, population-average, and ultrarapid metabolizers...

Parallel artificial liquid membrane extraction (PALME) was combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) and the potential for screening of new psychoactive substances (NPS) was investigated for the first time. PALME was performed in 96-well format comprising a donor plate, a supported liquid membrane (SLM), and an acceptor plate. Uncharged NPS were extracted from plasma or whole blood, across an organic SLM, and into an aqueous acceptor solution, facilitated by a pH gradient...

Most Chinese characters are composed of a semantic radical on the left and a phonetic radical on the right. The semantic radical provides the semantic information; the phonetic radical provides information concerning the pronunciation of the whole character. The pseudo-characters in the study consisted of different sub-lexical parts of real Chinese characters and consequently they also had the semantic radical and the phonetic radical. But they were not readable and had no actual meaning. In order to investigate the spatiotemporal cortical activation patterns underlying the orthographic, phonological and semantic processing of Chinese characters, we used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to explore the processing of Chinese characters and pseudo-characters when 14 healthy Chinese college students viewed the characters passively...

Several prognostic factors in stages I B and II A cervical carcinoma have been widely studied to define groups of patients with a poor prognosis. Most of these factors are interrelated. The characteristics which should be regarded as main factors have not yet been defined, because the studies reported were based on mainly retrospective and non-randomized analysis. Reviewing the literature, lymph node metastasis, differentiation grade, tumor size, parametrial extension, lymph-blood vessel invasion and cervical invasion seem to be prognostically important factors, which suggests that the subdivision of patients according to the FIGO classification alone is inaccurate...
