Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to useful chemicals is an attractive strategy to cut its emission in atmosphere. However, high overpotential and energy consumption required in the electrochemical reduction are the major barriers of this process. In this study, a new CO2 reduction technique for production of formic acid was proposed from waste activated sludge digestion in a microbial electrosynthesis system (MES) with iron plate and carbon pillar as the electrodes. Compared with other reactors, methane production of the Fe-C MES reactor was slightly lower and CO2 was undetectable...

This study comprises the optimization and validation of a new TLC method for determination of flavonols in the bulbs of seven cultivars of onions and shallots. Separation was performed on RP-18 plates with the solvent mixture tetrahydrofuran/water/formic acid (40+60+6, V/V/V) as a mobile phase. The method was evaluated for precision, linearity, LOD, LOQ, accuracy and robustness. Chromatographic analysis of the extracts revealed the presence of three main flavonols, quercetin, quercetin-4'-O-glucoside and quercetin-3,4'-O-diglucoside in the majority of analyzed cultivars...

Ultrathin single-crystalline palladium nanowires (PdNWs) were rapidly prepared using a facile one-step soft-template-directed method. The utilization of dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride and an appropriate crystallization temperature determined the construction of PdNWs together. The obtained PdNWs exhibited good electrocatalytic performance toward formic acid oxidation.

The performance of nanomaterials in electrochemical energy conversion (fuel cells) and storage (secondary batteries) strongly depends on the nature of their surfaces. Designing the structure of electrode materials is the key approach to achieving better performance. Metal or metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs) with high-energy surfaces and open surface structures have attained significant attention in the past decade since such features possess intrinsically exceptional properties. However, they are thermodynamically metastable, resulting in a huge challenge in their shape-controlled synthesis...

The kinetics and catalytic mechanism of sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation using Fe3O4/Mn3O4 nanocomposite as catalysts in heterogeneous Fenton-like process were investigated. The degradation process of SMT conformed to first-order kinetic model. The apparent activation energy (E a ) of the process was calculated to be 40.5 kJ/mol. The reusability and stability of the catalysts were evaluated based on the results of the successive batch experiments. The intermediates were identified and quantified by ion chromatography (IC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)...

Silk fibroin (SF) is a typical fibrous protein that is secreted by silkworms and spiders. It has been used in a variety of areas, and especially for tissue-engineering scaffolds, due to its sound processability, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. With respect to gelation, the SF gelation time is long in aqueous solutions, so a novel approach is needed to shorten this time. The solubility of regenerated SF is sound in formic acid (FA), which is a carboxylic acid of the simplest structure...

MALDI-TOF MS has become increasingly popular for microorganism identification in the routine laboratory. Compared with conventional morphology-based techniques, MALDI-TOF is relatively inexpensive (per-unit identification), involves a rapid result turnaround time and yields more accurate results without the need for highly qualified staff. However, this technology has been technically difficult to implement for filamentous fungi identification. Identification of dermatophytes, a type of filamentous fungi, remains particularly challenging, partly due to the lack of clear species definition for some taxa or within some species complexes...

The complex between diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) and formic acid has been reinvestigated. Mixing the compounds in the ratio 1:1 leads to a phase separation in which the upper phase is DIPEA, the lower phase is the "ionic liquid" named DIPEF. A combined NMR and DFT study shows that the lower phase primarily is formic acid:formate and diisopropylammonium ions in the ratio 2:1 (acid:base) plus the formic acid dimer. Addition of more acid leads to more and more of the acid dimer. The proton transfer in the system is ~ 0...

The present study examined the effects of formic acid and acetic acid on human adenocarcinoma-derived alveolar basal epithelial A549 cells. The organic acids were administered either individually or in combination, into either the culture medium (aqueous phase) or the gaseous phase of an air-liquid interface. When either of the acids was administered into the aqueous phase, cell proliferation was inhibited at doses of 1-10 mg/mL. In contrast, when the acids were administered either individually or in combination, into the gaseous phase of the air-liquid interface, cell proliferation was not altered...

We report a full-dimensional, permutationally invariant potential energy surface (PES) for the cyclic formic acid dimer. This PES is a least-squares fit to 13475 CCSD(T)-F12a/haTZ (VTZ for H and aVTZ for C and O) energies. The energy-weighted, root-mean-square fitting error is 11 cm(-1) and the barrier for the double-proton transfer on the PES is 2848 cm(-1), in good agreement with the directly-calculated ab initio value of 2853 cm(-1). The zero-point vibrational energy of 15 337 ± 7 cm(-1) is obtained from diffusion Monte Carlo calculations...

Adsorbed formate is observed on a supported Pt nanoparticle for the first time during formic acid electro-oxidation. Bands assigned to OCO stretching and CH bending reveal some OCO but little CH bond weakening on adsorption compared to the free anion. The formate potential dependence is similar to polycrystalline electrodes while adsorbed CO persists up to +1.2 V, 0.5 V higher than on polycrystalline Pt.
