The role of formic acid together with the effect of the solvent type and their synergic interactions with a NiMo catalyst were studied for the conversion of lignin into bio-oil in an alcohol/formic acid media. Replacing formic acid with molecular hydrogen or isopropanol decreased the oil yield to a considerable degree, increased the solid yield and altered the nature of the bio-oil. The differences induced by the presence of molecular hydrogen were comparable to the ones observed in the isopropanol system, suggesting similar lignin conversion mechanisms for both systems...

The photolysis of iodide anions promotes the reaction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen sulfide or thiols to quantitatively yield formic acid and sulfur or disulfides. The reaction proceeds in acetonitrile and aqueous solutions, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature by irradiation using a low-pressure mercury lamp. This transition-metal-free photocatalytic process for CO2 capture coupled with H2 S removal may have been relevant as a prebiotic carbon dioxide fixation.

The European classification, labeling and packaging classified formaldehyde as human carcinogen Group 1B and mutagen 2, fostering the re-evaluation of the exposure risk in occupational settings. Although formaldehyde exposure is traditionally measured in air, many efforts were made to identify specific exposure biomarkers: urinary formaldehyde, formic acid and DNA damage indicators. Though used in combination, none of these seems satisfactory. The influence of the metabolism on exogenous formaldehyde levels, the exposure to other xenobiotics, the difference in genetic background and metabolism efficiency, misled the relationship between genotoxicity and exposure data...

OBJECTIVES: Rapid identification of Acinetobacter species is critical since members of the A. baumannii (Ab) group differ in antibiotic susceptibility and clinical outcomes. A. baumannii, A. pittii and A. nosocomialis can be identified by MALDI-TOF/MS, while the novel species A. seifertii and A. dijkshoorniae cannot. Low identification rates for A. nosocomialis have also been reported. We evaluated the use of MALDI-TOF/MS to identify isolates of A. seifertii and A. dijkshoorniae and revisited the identification of A...

Synthetic cathinones are new stimulant drugs derived from cathinone that have been sold as "legal highs" worldwide. These compounds can elicit powerful effects such as delusions, hallucinations as well as other potentially dangerous behavior. New analogs with varying effects and potencies are constantly introduced in the market to evade legislation, and they are not detected by routine screening and confirmation methods. Oral fluid is an alternative matrix of increasing interest in forensic toxicology. Its collection is non-invasive and easily supervised, and positive drug findings typically reflect recent drug exposure...

Formic acid functions as a fragrance ingredient, preservative, and pH adjuster in cosmetic products, whereas sodium formate functions as a preservative. Because of its acidic properties, formic acid is a dermal and ocular irritant. However, when used as a pH adjuster in cosmetic formulations, formic acid will be neutralized to yield formate salts, for example, sodium formate, thus minimizing safety concerns. Formic acid and sodium formate have been used at concentrations up to 0.2% and 0.34%, respectively, with hair care products accounting for the highest use concentrations of both ingredients...

Recent reports of the widespread occurrence of the neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in cyanobacteria and particularly seafood have raised concerns for public health. LC-MS/MS is currently the analytical method of choice for BMAA determinations but incomplete separation of isomeric and isobaric compounds, matrix suppression and conjugated forms are plausible limitations. In this study, capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with MS/MS has been developed as an alternative method for the quantitative determination of free BMAA...

The near-ultraviolet π(*)←π absorption system of weakly bound complexes formed between tropolone (TrOH) and formic acid (FA) under cryogenic free-jet expansion conditions has been interrogated by exploiting a variety of fluorescence-based laser-spectroscopic probes, with synergistic quantum-chemical calculations built upon diverse model chemistries being enlisted to unravel the structural and dynamical properties of the pertinent ground [X̃(1)A(')] and excited [Ã(1)A(')π(*)π] electronic states. For binary TrOH ⋅ FA adducts, the presence of dual hydrogen-bond linkages gives rise to three low-lying isomers designated (in relative energy order) as INT, EXT1, and EXT2 depending on whether docking of the FA ligand to the TrOH substrate takes place internal or external to the five-membered reaction cleft of tropolone...

Despite the great success of controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals with various sizes and morphologies, an efficient one-pot approach to preparing well-organized three-dimensional (3D) structures with unique facets exposed remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a unique 3D nanoarchitecture for PdCu alloy, created by a simple chemical reduction method, in which nanosized octahedral PdCu nanocrystals are directly assembled into 3D super-branched structures. Detailed investigations of its electrocatalytic performance demonstrate that the as-prepared facet-controlled PdCu super-branched nanostructures possess higher activity towards the formic acid oxidation reaction in comparison to the commercially available Pd black catalyst...

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 130-170 nm) photochemistry of the H2OCO complex is studied by matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy. The H2OCO complexes in Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe matrices are generated by ultraviolet (UV, 193 and 250 nm) photolysis of formic acid (HCOOH). VUV photolysis of the H2OCO complexes is found to lead to the formation of the OHCO radical-molecule complexes and trans-HOCO radicals. It is shown that the matrix material, local matrix morphology, and possibly the H2OCO complex geometry strongly affect the VUV photolysis pathways...

Thioaldehydes are an important class of sulfur compounds involved in atmospheric, synthetic organic and biological chemistry. Traditionally, they are believed to be formed by the nucleophilic attack of bisulfide anion on the carbonyl compounds. Herein we suggest a novel mechanism that does not require the formation of bisulfide anion, but rather involves an interaction between hydrogen sulfide and an aldehyde. Though the uncatalyzed or the water-catalyzed reactions involve high barriers, the formic acid-catalyzed reactions involve moderate barriers that should be accessible in planetary atmospheres...

Upon supersonic expansion, formic acid and cyclobutanone (CBU) form a molecular cluster in which the two constituent molecules, linked by OHO and CHO hydrogen bonds, undergo a rapid interconversion between two equivalent forms. The tunneling motion takes place through the rupture and reformation of the C-HO hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of HCOOH and one of the two hydrogen atoms of the methylenic group adjacent to the cyclobutanone keto group. From the microwave spectra, tunneling energy splittings (ΔE01) have been determined for the parent (1122...

Niraparib (MK-4827) is a novel poly(ADP-Ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor currently investigated in phase III clinical trials to treat cancers. The development of a new drug includes the characterisation of absorption, metabolism and excretion (AME) of the compound. AME studies are a requirement of regulatory agencies and for this purpose bioanalytical assays are essential. This article describes the development and validation of a bioanalytical assay for niraparib and its carboxylic acid metabolite M1 in human plasma and urine using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)...
