Nitric oxide (NO) is produced by a family of isoenzymes, nitric oxide synthases (NOSs), which all utilize L-arginine as substrate. The production of NO in the lung and airways can play a number of roles during lung development, regulates airway and vascular smooth muscle tone, and is involved in inflammatory processes and host defense. Altered L-arginine/NO homeostasis, due to the accumulation of endogenous NOS inhibitors and competition for substrate with the arginase enzymes, has been found to play a role in various conditions affecting the lung and in pulmonary diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), pulmonary hypertension, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia...

Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) is a well-known air pollutant threatening public health. Studies has confirmed that long-term exposure to the particles could reduce the pulmonary function, cause exacerbation of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and increase incidence and mortality of lung cancer. Bixin is a natural compound that is widely used as a food additive. Our previous studies demonstrated that bixin i.p. administration could protect against particles intratracheal exposure (56 days)-induced lung injury in an Nrf2-dependent manner...

The expediency of complex recovery treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients on the base of artificial rock salt aerosol medium (haloaerosoltherapy) and probiotic drug subalin intake was grounded. It was revealed that additional prescription of subalin results in the more expressed lipoperoxidation's inhibition, especially in patients with COPD II st. and more considerable decrease of endogenic intoxication at COPD III st. It was shown that complex treatment with subalin usage promoted the relief of desease's clinical duration in remoted period...

Treatment results of 48 patients with mediastinitis after the open cardiac surgery were analyzed. The main mediastinitis risk factors were: the chronic obstructive lung desease, diabetes mekkitus, severe cardiac insufficiency, prolonged operation, the use of artificial blood circulation and sterna instsbility. Major infective agents of mediastinitis were the Gram-positive cocci. The treatment options varied from the prolonged antibiotic therapy to plastic reconstructive surgery, which were determined by the severity of mediastinitis...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
R Assael, J M Martt, G C Okeson
The incidence of adrenergic-induced arrhythmias was studied in 19 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease uncomplicated by respiratory failure or cardiac desease. The effects of isoproterenol hydrochloride and a placebo were studied, using a randomized double blind technique and continuous monitoring of the cardiac rhythm. Two of the patients had episodes of arrhythmia associated only with nebulization of isoproterenol hydrochloride. Ten patients had no abnormality associated with isoproterenol hydrochloride or placebo nebulizations...
