BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma possesses a notable sex difference in incidence, and a protective role of estrogens has been hypothesized. METHODS: Using data from 13 cancer registries in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program, we describe the age-specific sex difference in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States during 1992-2013. We used a curve fitting by non-linear regression to quantitatively characterize the age-specific incidence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma by sex...

Pollination is an important event in plant sexual reproduction, and post-pollination response is an essential process for reproduction. Populus alba × P. glandulosa is used widely in scientific research, especially in cross breeding as parents. Adult female P. alba × P. glandulosa flowers are highly compatible with pollen from male P. tomentosa, but the early post-pollination response of flowers at the molecular levels is unclear. In this study, RNA-seq was employed to comprehensively understand the response of female P...

How to maintain the stability of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in wounds with massive wound fluids is important to accelerate wound healing. Here, a novel liposome with hydrogel core of silk fibroin (SF-LIP) is successfully developed by the common liposomal template, followed by gelation of liquid SF inside vesicle under sonication. SF-LIP is capable of encapsulating bFGF (SF-bFGF-LIP) with high efficiency, having a diameter of 99.8 ± 0.5 nm and zeta potential of -9.41 ± 0.10 mV. SF-LIP effectively improves the stability of bFGF in wound fluids...

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common and lethal microvascular complications of diabetes. This study aimed to explore whether coenzymeQ10 (CoQ10) as an antioxidant combined with ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) could reverse the progress of early diabetic nephropathy (DN). CoQ10 has great potential to treat early DN. However, the clinical application of CoQ10 has been limited because of its low aqueous solubility and non-specific distribution. Therefore, CoQ10-loaded liposomes (CoQ10-lip) were prepared and combined with ultrasound microbubbles for the early theranostics of DN...

Thyroid tuberculosis (TT) is a very rare condition, even in countries where tuberculosis is endemic. However, the prevalence of tuberculosis has increased worldwide and thyroid involvement can be a primary manifestation of the disease. We present the case of a 43-year-old patient with this diagnosis and perform a review of the related literature. After searching for similar case reports in Western Europe since 2010 we identified six cases in four countries. TT should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a thyroid nodule...

Background. Fetal heart can regenerate to restore its normal anatomy and function in response to injury, but this regenerative capacity is lost within the first week of postnatal life. Although the specific molecular mechanisms remain to be defined, it is presumed that aging of cardiac stem or progenitor cells may contribute to the loss of regenerative potential. Methods. To study this aging-related dysfunction, we cultured mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from human fetal heart tissues. Senescence was induced by exposing cells to chronic oxidative stress/low serum...

We developed a strategy to harness alkyl amines as alkylating agents via C-N bond activation. This Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of alkylpyridinium salts, readily formed from primary amines, is the first example of a metal-catalyzed cross coupling via C-N bond activation of an amine with an unactivated alkyl group. This reaction enjoys broad scope and functional group tolerance. Primary and secondary alkyl groups can be installed. Preliminary studies suggest a Ni(I)/Ni(III) catalytic cycle.

Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a fundamental role in plant response and adaptation to abiotic stresses, such as drought, high salinity and low temperature. Populus hopeiensis exhibits exceptional tolerance to water-deficit environments and is therefore an excellent choice for studying drought tolerance in trees. This study provides a global view of transcriptome dynamics in P. hopeiensis in response to exogenous ABA using Illumina RNA-sequencing. Endogenous ABA content increased and reached a peak at 8 h after ABA treatment and then significantly decreased at latter time points...

Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) were recently discovered as endogenous small noncoding RNAs. Some recent research suggests that piRNAs may play an important role in cancer. So the precise identification of human piRNAs is a significant work. In this paper, we introduce a series of new features with 80 dimension called short sequence motifs (SSM). A hybrid feature vector with 1444 dimension can be formed by combining 1364 features of [Formula: see text]-mer strings and 80 features of SSM features. We optimize the 1444 dimension features using the feature score criterion (FSC) and list them in descending order according to the scores...

Interprofessional teams work together on the labor and delivery unit, where clinical care is often unscheduled, rapidly evolving, and fast paced. Effective communication is key for coordinated delivery of optimal care and for fostering a culture of community and safety in the workplace. The preoperative huddle allows for information sharing, cross-checking, and preparation before the start of surgery. Postoperative debriefings allow the operative team to engage in ongoing process improvement. Debriefings after adverse events allow for shared understanding, mutual healing, and help mitigating the harm to potential "second victims...
