We developed a strategy to harness alkyl amines as alkylating agents via C-N bond activation. This Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of alkylpyridinium salts, readily formed from primary amines, is the first example of a metal-catalyzed cross coupling via C-N bond activation of an amine with an unactivated alkyl group. This reaction enjoys broad scope and functional group tolerance. Primary and secondary alkyl groups can be installed. Preliminary studies suggest a Ni(I)/Ni(III) catalytic cycle.

Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a fundamental role in plant response and adaptation to abiotic stresses, such as drought, high salinity and low temperature. Populus hopeiensis exhibits exceptional tolerance to water-deficit environments and is therefore an excellent choice for studying drought tolerance in trees. This study provides a global view of transcriptome dynamics in P. hopeiensis in response to exogenous ABA using Illumina RNA-sequencing. Endogenous ABA content increased and reached a peak at 8 h after ABA treatment and then significantly decreased at latter time points...

Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) were recently discovered as endogenous small noncoding RNAs. Some recent research suggests that piRNAs may play an important role in cancer. So the precise identification of human piRNAs is a significant work. In this paper, we introduce a series of new features with 80 dimension called short sequence motifs (SSM). A hybrid feature vector with 1444 dimension can be formed by combining 1364 features of [Formula: see text]-mer strings and 80 features of SSM features. We optimize the 1444 dimension features using the feature score criterion (FSC) and list them in descending order according to the scores...

Interprofessional teams work together on the labor and delivery unit, where clinical care is often unscheduled, rapidly evolving, and fast paced. Effective communication is key for coordinated delivery of optimal care and for fostering a culture of community and safety in the workplace. The preoperative huddle allows for information sharing, cross-checking, and preparation before the start of surgery. Postoperative debriefings allow the operative team to engage in ongoing process improvement. Debriefings after adverse events allow for shared understanding, mutual healing, and help mitigating the harm to potential "second victims...

Extracellular matrix-based biomaterials have many advantages over synthetic polymer materials for regenerative medicine applications. In central nervous system (CNS), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is widely studied as a potential agent for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the poor stability of bFGF hampered its clinical use. In this study, CNS-derived biologic scaffold containing bFGF was used to enhance and extend the neuroprotective effect of bFGF on PD targeted therapy. Decellularized brain extracellular matrix (dcBECM) was prepared by chemical extraction...

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are established cancer biomarkers for the "liquid biopsy" of tumors. Molecular analysis of single CTCs, which recapitulate primary and metastatic tumor biology, remains challenging because current platforms have limited throughput, are expensive, and are not easily translatable to the clinic. Here, we report a massively parallel, multigene-profiling nanoplatform to compartmentalize and analyze hundreds of single CTCs. After high-efficiency magnetic collection of CTC from blood, a single-cell nanowell array performs CTC mutation profiling using modular gene panels...

The present study has been performed on temporal changes in gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) between tenocytes under static tensile strain with the magnitude of 0% (no strain), 4% (physiological magnitude) or 8% (overloading magnitude) during a 24-h culture period. Tenocytes were isolated from rabbit Achilles tendon and seeded on a stretchable microgroove substrate. GJIC was evaluated as intercellular diffusion coefficient of calcein (DGJ) using fluorescence loss in photobleaching (FLIP) protocol accompanied with a mathematical model of molecular diffusion both within the cell and between the cells...

Because of the short half-life, either systemic or local administration of bFGF shows significant drawbacks to spinal injury. In this study, an acellular spinal cord scaffold (ASC) was encapsulated in a thermo-sensitive hydrogel to overcome these limitations. The ASC was firstly prepared from the spinal cord of healthy rats and characterized by scanning electronic microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. bFGF could specifically complex with the ASC scaffold via electrostatic or receptor-mediated interactions...

Cytochrome P450 26A1 (CYP26A1) has a spatiotemporal expression pattern in the uterus, with a significant increase in mRNA and protein levels during peri-implantation. Inhibiting the function or expression of CYP26A1 can cause pregnancy failure, suggesting an important regulatory role of CYP26A1 in the maintenance of pregnancy. However, little is known about the exact mechanism involved. In this study, using a pCR3.1-cyp26a1 plasmid immunization mouse model and a Cyp26a1-MO (Cyp26a1-specific antisense oligos) knockdown mouse model, we report that the number of Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) lectin-positive uterine natural killer (uNK) cells was reduced in pCR3...

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most refractory types of adult epilepsy, and treatment options remain unsatisfactory. Gastrodin (GAS), a phenolic glucoside used in Chinese herbal medicine and derived from Gastrodia elata Blume, has been shown to have remarkable anticonvulsant effects on various models of epilepsy in vivo. However, the mechanisms of GAS as an anticonvulsant drug remain to be established. By utilizing a combination of behavioral surveys, immunofluorescence and electrophysiological recordings, the present study characterized the anticonvulsant effect of GAS in a pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) rat model of TLE and explored the underlying cellular mechanisms...
