In recent decades, the prevalence of thyroid cancer has risen substantially, with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) constituting over 50% of cases. Although most PTMCs exhibit indolent growth and a favorable prognosis, some present an increased risk of recurrence and an unfavorable prognosis due to high-risk characteristics such as lymph node metastasis, extrathyroidal extension, and distant metastasis. The early identification of clinically progressing PTMC remains elusive. In this review, we summarize findings from PTMC progression-related literature, highlighting that factors such as larger tumor size, cervical lymph node metastasis, extrathyroidal extension, younger age, higher preoperative serum thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, family history, and obesity positively correlate with PTMC progression...

Overdiagnosis of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is prevalent, and effective management of PTMC is an important matter. The high incidence and low mortality rate of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) justify the preference for active surveillance (AS) over immediate surgery (IS), particularly in cases of low-risk PTMC. Japan began AS in the 1990s as an alternative surgical option for PTMC and it has shown promising results. The safety and efficacy of AS management in PTMC have been verified. However, AS may not be suitable for all PTMC cases...

BACKGROUND: Up to 15.3% of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients with negative clinical lymph node metastasis (cN0) were confirmed to have pathological lymph node metastasis in level VI. Conventional ultrasound (US) focuses on the characteristics of tumor capsule and the periphery to determine whether the tumor has invasive growth. However, due to its small size, the typical features of invasiveness shown by conventional 2-dimensional (2D) US are not well visualized. US-based radiomics makes use of artificial intelligence and big data to build a model that can help improving diagnostic accuracy and providing prognostic implication of the disease...

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the study of radiomics in thyroid diseases has developed rapidly. This study aimed to establish a preoperative radiomics prediction model for central compartment lymph node metastases (CLNMs) in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients using gradient-boosting decision tree (GBDT) model and evaluate the performance of the model. METHODS: A total of 274 patients with PTMC admitted for thyroid surgery at China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University from January 2020 to July 2022 were retrospectively analyzed...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) adjacent to the trachea and compare them with those of PTMC distant from the trachea. METHODS: Patients who received RFA for solitary low-risk PTMC between June 2014 and July 2020 were reviewed and classified into adjacent and distant groups. To balance between-group confounders, the propensity score matching approach was employed. Volume, volume reduction ratio (VRR), tumor disappearance, complications, and disease progression were assessed and compared between the groups...

Nitric oxide (NO) not only plays a vital role in a series of physiological processes but also has great potential for therapeutic applications. One of the existing challenges in using NO as a gas therapeutic is the inconvenience of gaseous NO storage, and thus, it is of importance to develop NO-releasing vehicle platforms. Although a variety of polymer-based NO-releasing nanoparticles have been constructed, a majority of the systems are limited to spherical morphologies. Here we present the preparation of biodegradable NO-releasing amphiphilic block copolymers containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(trimethylene carbonate-4-nitro-3-(trifluoromethyl)) (PTMC-NF), which can self-assemble into tubular polymersomes...

Intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD) is a common condition that causes severe back pain and affects patients' mobility and life quality considerably. IVDD originates within the central region of the disk called the nucleus pulposus (NP). Removing the damaged tissue and replacing it with NP cells (NPCs) delivered within an in situ forming hydrogel is a promising treatment approach. Herein we describe a hydrogel formulation based on 4-arm [poly(ethylene glycol)- b -poly(trimethylene carbonate)-acrylate] (4a[PEG- b -PTMC-Ac]) crosslinked with thiolated chondroitin sulfate via Michael-type reaction for this purpose...

Cochlear implantation (CI) is the primary intervention for patients with sensorineural hearing loss to restore their hearing. However, approximately 90 % of CI recipients experience unexpected fibrosis around the inserted electrode arrays due to acute and chronic inflammation. This fibrosis leads to progressive residual hearing loss. Addressing this complication is crucial for enhancing CI outcomes, yet an effective treatment has not yet been found. In this study, we developed a multifunctional dexamethasone (DXM)-loaded polytrimethylene carbonate (PTMC) electrode coating to mitigate inflammatory reactions and fibrosis after CI...

Among well-differentiated thyroid malignancies, the most commonly occurring type is identified as papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), which makes up 70-90% of the cases. A subtype of PTC is papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), which includes tumors smaller than 10 mm in diameter. Due to the advancements in diagnostic techniques, the incidence of this type of cancer is on the rise...
