OBJECTIVE: Although the role of platelet activation has been debated in patients with mitral stenosis (MS) and spontaneous echocardiographic contrast (SEC), data on differences in mean platelet volume (MPV) according to the presence of SEC/left atrial thrombus and the rhythm status are lacking. In this study, MPV was analyzed in patients with MS according to the presence of SEC/left atrial thrombus. METHODS: Between January 2005 and March 2014, 188 symptomatic patients having moderate or severe MS (mean age, 45...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the Macruz index (P/P-R segment) could predict the severity of valvular involvement and the success of percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) in patients with mitral stenosis (MS). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients with MS eligible for PMBV and 72 healthy subjects (61 females and 11 males) with sinus rhythm were enrolled into this study. PMBV was performed in all patients using a percutaneous transseptal antegrade approach and a multitrack balloon technique...

We propose a spinning-assisted layer-by-layer method for simple fabrication of a multilayered polymer hydrogel membrane that contains living cells. Hydrogel formation occurred based on the spontaneous cross-linking reaction between two polymers in aqueous solution. A water-soluble 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine polymer bearing phenylboronic acid groups (PMBV) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were used as polymers for hydrogel membrane formation. Changing the number of hydrogel membrane layers, polymer concentration, spinning rate, and processing time for diffusion-dependent gelation of PMBV and PVA facilitated the regulation of the multilayered polymer hydrogel membrane thickness and morphology...

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PMBV) has an established role in the treatment of rheumatic mitral stenosis. The study aim was to evaluate the effects of PMBV on left ventricular function in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) by using strain and strain rate imaging modalities. METHODS: The study included 30 consecutive patients (21 women, nine men; mean age 44 ± 14 years) with moderate to severe MS. Left ventricular long-axis strain and strain rate color tissue Doppler imaging of the septal, lateral, inferior and anterior basal segments were performed one day before and seven days after PMBV...

A large number of lineage-committed progenitor cells are required for advanced regenerative medicine based on cell engineering. Due to their ability to differentiate into multiple cells lines, multipotent stem cells have emerged as a vital source for generating transplantable cells for use in regenerative medicine. Increment in differentiation efficiency of the mesenchymal stem cell was obtained by using hydrogel to adjust the proliferation cycle of encapsulated cells to signal sensitive phase. Three dimensional (3-D) polymer networks composed of poly(2-methacyloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-co-n-butyl methacrylate (BMA)-co-p-vinylphenylboronic acid (VPBA)) (PMBV) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared as a hydrogel...

Percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) is the primary treatment in mitral stenosis patients with appropriate valve anatomy with no contraindications present. Pericardial effusion, cardiac tamponade and thrombus formation are rare but serious complications of this procedure. In the literature, the mortality rate associated with PMBV has been reported as 1%. The presence of intracardiac thrombus is a contraindication for PMBV. However, thrombus formation during the process is a very rare condition. In this case, we present a patient with rheumatic mitral stenosis, with both pericardial effusion and intracardiac thrombus, after laseration at the base of the left atrium during the valvuloplasty procedure...

Although the prevalence of rheumatic fever is decreasing in developed countries, it still affects numerous areas in the nonindustrialized world. Untreated mitral stenosis (MS) contributes to a significant global morbidity and mortality. Echocardiography is the main diagnostic imaging modality with which to evaluate mitral valve (MV) obstruction and assess the severity and hemodynamic consequences of MS as well as valve morphology. According to current guidelines and recommendations for clinical practice, the severity of MS should not be defined by a single value but assessed by valve areas, mean Doppler gradients, and pulmonary pressures...

We considered that properties of the microenvironment surrounding cells are important for the control of the cell functions. Cytocompatible polymer hydrogels are good candidates to study such microenvironment. Here, we prepared spontaneously forming hydrogels composed of two polymer systems, namely poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-n-butyl methacrylate-co-p-vinylphenylboronic acid) (PMBV) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The PMBV/PVA hydrogels could be reversibly dissociated by the addition of d-sorbitol...

A precise spatial multicellular polymer hydrogel matrix was prepared by successive assembly of cell-laden hydrogel layers alternated by hydrogel layers without cells based on the spontaneous hydrogel formation between 2 aqueous polymer solutions. The polymers used were a water-soluble 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine polymer bearing phenylboronic acid groups (PMBV) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Each cell-laden layer was deposited as a cell-laden PMBV solution on a PMBV/PVA precursor film. PMBV/PVA multilayer hydrogel was stacked on the top of a cell-laden layer by sequential coating with spinning of the PMBV and PVA solutions...

Percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) was initially described by Inoue in 1984 as a novel percutaneous technique for the management of mitral stenosis. Intracardiac echocardiography was initially used in the 1980s but was not universally accepted due to its high-frequency transducers and problems with steerability and manipulation. In the 1990s technical improvements led to more generalized use in various structural interventional procedures. We present the case of a successful PMBV guided exclusively by ICE...

Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) was instituted and the patient was referred for emergency mitral surgery. During surgery anterior mitral leaflet was excised. Most of the posterior leaflet was preserved. Mitral valve was replaced with St Jude mitral mechanical valve. Operation was uneventful and patient's recovery was uncomplicated...
