In their famous study on risk judgments, Lichtenstein, Slovic, Fischhoff, Layman, and Combs (1978) concluded that people tend to overestimate the frequencies of dramatic causes of death (e.g., homicide, tornado) and underestimate the frequencies of nondramatic ones (e.g., diabetes, heart disease). Further, their analyses of newspapers indicated that dramatic risks are overrepresented in the media-suggesting that people's distorted risk perceptions might be driven by distortions in media coverage. Although these patterns were not evaluated statistically in the original analyses, the conclusions have become a staple in the social sciences...

Objectives: This study aimed to determine which sociodemographic and lifestyle factors may act as predictors of multimorbidity (defined as diabetes + hypertension) amongst men aged 15-54 within urban and rural areas of India. Methods: Data from the latest 2019-2021 India NFHS-5 survey were utilized. Presumed cases of multimorbidity were defined as men who had DM + HTN. A total of 22,411 men in urban areas and 66,768 rural men were analyzed using mixed-effect multi-level binary logistic regression models. Results: Various predictors were found to have a statistically significant association to multimorbidity...

Chrononutrition is the field of nutritional science that investigates the relationship between food intake, timing of food intake, and their effects and influence on circadian rhythms and overall health. By aligning eating patterns with body's internal clock, optimisation of metabolic processes, improvements of various aspects of health can be achieved. Cardiovascular (CV) and metabolic diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Notably, in the US alone, approximately half of all cardiometabolic deaths are attributed to modifiable dietary factors, suggesting that dietary changes could result in dramatic increases in lifespan and its related quality of life...

BACKGROUND: It has been estimated that 30% of diabetic people experience dermatological problems. Fungal infections are the most frequent cause of these lesions. While tinea infections in non-diabetic individuals rarely cause symptoms, in diabetes patients, they can create fistulas and entry sites that can result in catastrophic bacterial infections. AIM: This research paper aims to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with tinea pedis among diabetic patients in Saudi Arabia...

AIM: To understand how the interaction of peer parents in disease-specific social media groups influences their daily treatment decisions. DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined the content of the largest Hungarian Facebook group for parents of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus, analyzing 28 days of activity using netnography. In addition, we undertook an online quantitative questionnaire to identify group members' (n = 267) attitudes. RESULTS: In exploring the influence of the community on the decisions of peer-parents, we found that the respondents could be divided into two clusters...

Obesity is a major epidemic plaguing American society. Injectable subcutaneous medications initially designed for use in type 2 diabetes management, such as semaglutide and other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, are rapidly gaining popularity for their effects on weight. These drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro) are ubiquitous on social media and are promoted by celebrities across all demographics. "Ozempic face" and "Ozempic butt" are now mainstream concepts highlighting the morphologic changes that occur with these medications...

BACKGROUND: Identification of casts by urinary sediment microscopy is a valuable diagnostic clinical tool for the evaluation of kidney disease. Vacuolar casts are an unrecognized unique type of casts characterized by the presence of non-polarizable, clear vesicles of various sizes contained within a cast matrix, different from lipid casts, erythrocyte casts, or any other casts. We aimed to gain better understanding of the clinical relevance of these casts by establishing a multinational collaborative group to search for cases in which vacuolar casts were identified...

New patients turning to semaglutide (Ozempic® and Wegovy®), a glucagon-like-peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonist, for weight loss, have captivated social media platforms.  Wegovy® carries a United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for chronic weight management in patients who have a body mass index (BMI) 27 kg/m2 or greater and at least one weight-related condition (eg, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol) or in patients with a 30 kg/m2 or greater BMI. Although other semaglutide formulations are not FDA approved for weight loss, the term "Ozempic face" has consumed the media with the medication's rising popularity...

Background and objectives Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic complex metabolic disease characterized mainly by hyperglycemia. It appears to be a global epidemic and an increasingly major non-communicable disease, posing a threat to both affluent and nonaffluent societies. Diabetes dramatically increases the risk of developing stroke, chronic kidney disease, and coronary artery disease. These complications include chronic kidney disease, retinopathy, coronary artery disease, stroke, and diabetic foot ulcers...

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a condition in which the body responds improperly to harmful microorganisms and infections, which triggers a chain reaction throughout the body. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Infections that lead to sepsis, in most cases, start in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis rapidly leads to multi-organ failure and death. The risk factors for sepsis include a weakened immune system, being 65 years of age or older, and chronic medical conditions including diabetes, lung disease, and kidney disease...

BACKGROUND: Public knowledge about the role of lifestyle in managing type two diabetes (T2D) is an essential preventive strategy. Despite efforts in public awareness, the prevalence continues to rise, with the majority relying on the availability of effective therapeutics, underestimating the role of healthy lifestyle changes. BACKGROUND: Effective self-management of type 2 diabetes requires adequate health literacy (HL) and a supportive network. Diabetes self-management education and support programmes play a crucial role in improving these factors. However, limited research exists on how such programmes can support health literacy among migrants and facilitate the dissemination of knowledge within their social networks.
