REVIEW
Catherine E Stewart, Merrick J Moseley, Pantelis Georgiou, Alistair R Fielder
Occlusion therapy remains the mainstay treatment of amblyopia, but its outcome is not assured or universally excellent. Many factors are known to influence treatment outcome, among which compliance is foremost. The occlusion dose monitor (ODM) removes one variable from the treatment equation, because it records the occlusion actually received by-rather than prescribed for-the child. Improvement observed can thus be quantitatively related to the patching received. This review summarizes the insights the ODM has provided to date particularly in elucidating the dose-response relationship...

The public Medical Data Models (MDM) portal with more than 9.000 annotated forms from clinical trials and other sources provides many research opportunities for the medical informatics community. It is mainly used to address the problem of heterogeneity by searching, mediating, reusing, and assessing data models, e. g. the semi-interactive curation of core data records in a special domain. Furthermore, it can be used as a benchmark for evaluating algorithms that create, transform, annotate, and analyse structured patient data...

Due to the increasing use of electronic data capture systems for clinical research, the interest in saving resources by automatically generating and reusing case report forms in clinical studies is growing. OpenClinica, an open-source electronic data capture system enables the reuse of metadata in its own Excel import template, hampering the reuse of metadata defined in other standard formats. One of these standard formats is the Operational Data Model for metadata, administrative and clinical data in clinical studies...

Mastoidectomy, the removal of infected mastoid bones, is a common surgical procedure for the treatment of chronic otitis media. Persistent and recurrent otorrhea and accumulation of keratin debris following open cavity mastoidectomy are still bothersome issues for both patients and otologists. In this study, we used human ear adipose-derived stromal cells (hEASCs) in combination with polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds and osteogenic differentiation medium (ODM) to regenerate temporal bone defects. The hEASCs showed stem cell phenotypes, and these characteristics were maintained up to passage 5...

OBJECTIVE: The Learning Health System (LHS) requires integration of research into routine practice. 'eSource' or embedding clinical trial functionalities into routine electronic health record (EHR) systems has long been put forward as a solution to the rising costs of research. We aimed to create and validate an eSource solution that would be readily extensible as part of a LHS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The EU FP7 TRANSFoRm project's approach is based on dual modelling, using the Clinical Research Information Model (CRIM) and the Clinical Data Integration Model of meaning (CDIM) to bridge the gap between clinical and research data structures, using the CDISC Operational Data Model (ODM) standard...

Darolutamide (ODM-201) is a novel androgen receptor (AR) antagonist with a chemical structure distinctly different from currently approved AR antagonists that targets both wild-type and mutated ligand binding domain variants to inhibit AR nuclear translocation. Here, we evaluate the activity of darolutamide in enzalutamide-resistant castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) as well as in AR mutants detected in patients after treatment with enzalutamide, abiraterone, or bicalutamide. Darolutamide significantly inhibited cell growth and AR transcriptional activity in enzalutamide-resistant MR49F cells in vitro, and led to decreased tumor volume and serum prostate-specific antigen levels in vivo, prolonging survival in mice bearing enzalutamide-resistant MR49F xenografts...

Improving efficiency of oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis (ODM) is a prerequisite for wide application of this gene-editing approach in plant science and breeding. Here we have tested histone deacetylase inhibitor treatments for induction of relaxed chromatin and for increasing the efficiency of ODM in cultured maize cells. For phenotypic assay we produced transgenic maize cell lines expressing the non-functional Green Fluorescent Protein (mGFP) gene carrying a TAG stop codon. These transgenic cells were bombarded with corrective oligonucleotide as editing reagent to recover GFP expression...

This study aimed to estimate the organ dose reduction potential for organ-dose-based tube current modulated (ODM) thoracic computed tomography (CT) with a wide dose reduction arc. Twenty-one computational anthropomorphic phantoms (XCAT) were used to create a virtual patient population with clinical anatomic variations. The phantoms were created based on patient images with normal anatomy (age range: 27 to 66 years, weight range: 52.0 to 105.8 kg). For each phantom, two breast tissue compositions were simulated: [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] (glandular-to-adipose ratio)...

An experimental study is presented in which we compare the bulk phase behavior of discrete and (partially) disperse diblock co-oligomers (BCOs) with high χ-low N. To this end, oligomers of dimethylsiloxane (oDMS) and lactic acid (oLA) were synthesized, each having either a discrete number of repeat units or a variable block length. Ligation of the blocks resulted in oDMS-oLA BCOs with dispersities ranging from <1.00001 to 1.09, as revealed by mass spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. The phase behavior of all BCOs was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray scattering...

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a mainstay initial treatment for advanced hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC), but disease progression to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) invariably occurs when patients do not succumb to another disease or comorbidity. Recognition that the androgen receptor (AR) axis continues to drive disease progression has led to the development of several AR-directed approved agents, including abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. An investigational agent, darolutamide (ODM-201, BAY-1841788), has completed early-phase clinical trials, and two global phase III trials are currently accruing patients...

Optic disc melanocytoma (ODM) is a pigmented tumor with malignant potential characterized clinically as a dark brown to black lesion with feathery margins. The authors report a case of ODM and describe the utility of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in detecting superficial tumor vascularization. This case report demonstrated the ability of OCTA to reveal the fine abnormal retinal vasculature on the surface of the lesion, a characteristic of ODM, which has been previously correlated with tumor growth...

Block molecules belong to a rapidly growing research field in materials chemistry in which discrete macromolecular architectures bridge the gap between block copolymers (BCP) and liquid crystals (LCs). The merging of characteristics from both BCP and LCs is expected to result in exciting breakthroughs, such as the discovery of unexpected morphologies or significant shrinking of domain spacings in materials that possess the high definition of organic molecules and the processability of polymers. Here we report the bulk self-assembly of two families of monodisperse block molecules comprised of naphthalenediimides (NDIs) and oligodimethylsiloxanes (ODMS)...
